    What .dev domain did you buy?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 08:19 AM PST

    Todays the day that the "Early Access Program" ended, and the prices for the .dev TLD dropped.

    Which domains did you scoop up? What are you planning on doing with them?

    I got <FirstnameLastname>.dev and Beard.dev - I plan on using them for development environments for my freelance / personal work (I'll put subdomains under each)

    Edit: Google just told me they had issues getting beard.dev for me and canceled that, now that domain is taken.. Haha... Oh well.

    Am I being scammed?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:39 PM PST

    Hi guys,

    So I'm trying to freelance a little bit on the site to build up my portfolio, while simultaneously applying for jobs on Indeed and LinkedIn.

    I've had my portfolio up for months, and for the first-time, someone reached out to me via my site's contact form. Caught me off-guard completely.

    It seemed somewhat legitimate at the start? A small business owner based on agricultural produce who wanted some online presence.

    Semi-red flag 1: I sent him an email with about 15 questions or so, or gave him the options to make a quick 15 minute calls. I thought he'd go for the latter, since most business owners opt for time-efficiency, but instead he answered all the questions (albeit, short, one-liners).

    Red flag 2: Once we discussed his budget and needs ($3k-$10k), he said the following:

    "I need you to check out this site but I need something similar if possible www.cargill.com the site would only be informational. Kindly give me an estimate based on the sample website, the estimate should include hosting. We do not want more than 15-20 pages for the site as we want it to only be informational and a Contact Us page is obviously needed. I have a project consultant that is working on the text content and logos for the site. These are the Agriculture products we would be producing Almond Nut, Hazel nut, Pistachio, Gacillia Nut and Cashew nut.

    Note: We do not want Videos and blogs for the site We want only English language We don't have a domain yet but want the domain name as hisbusinessname.com You will be updating the site for me. We want the site up and running by the end of April My budget is $3,000 to $10,000

    Kindly get back to me with: (1) an estimate (2) your cell phone number (3) And will like to know if you are the owner of the company ?"

    Again, seemed okay...English had some slight grammatical errors, but I said that's fine...some people just aren't that great at typing out email, especially older people.

    Final flag: Upon giving him a quote with the services I would provide, he sent me this:

    I am okay with the estimate and thank you so much for staying within my budget, I really appreciate that. I will pay an upfront of $3,000 which is 50% of the total amount using my credit card so work can commence ASAP. I understand the content for the site would be needed for the job to commence. On the other hand I would need you to do me a little favor because the consultant that would provide the contents does not have facilities to charge payments for now and I am presently receiving my hearing treatment at the hospital and the doctors say I would go through surgical process soon. I want you to charge $7,100 on my card then you take $3,000 as deposit payment for my web design plus $100 for the stress this may cause you and the amount of $4,000 you would send across to the project consultant to enable her forward the text content and logos. Let me know how many percent surcharge it is for credit card processing and the processing platform you use.

    Now I'm already pretty sure of myself at this point...but this is a definite scam right?

    The only reason why I have any doubt at all is the fact that he was answering all of my questions, didn't have completely obviously broken English, etc.

    He also said he found me on Indeed.com...but I don't recall applying to any jobs of this description.

    Just wanted some peace of mind before cutting off communications completely.

    HTML question. Label in front of a textbox?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 04:22 PM PST

    I have a few textboxes in an HTML form.

    Best way to put a label in front of them, so the user knows what to input?

    eg: First Name _______________ <--- that is the textbox

    Where is the best place to ask this?

    Is keeping current a full time job?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:29 PM PST

    I'm an IT student looking to graduate in the next year or so. It's past time I actually decide where I want to take my degree. I've dabbled in things like creating websites, making video games, setting up secure networks, but webdev, has a major feature that I find really desirable, IE. the potential to work from home.

    So, I suppose my question is two fold: How feasible is a work from home career in webDev, and how much time do you spend outside of work keeping current?

    Tl;DR: I'm agoraphobic, and want to be able to have a life outside of work: Is webdev right for me?

    How to make a <div> stay pressed down with just CSS?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:57 PM PST

    I have to following html and css code:

    <!DOCTYPE html>

    <html>

    <head>

    <title>Page Title</title>

    <style>
    .button {
    background: #ededed;
    border: 1px solid #ccc;
    padding: 10px 30px;
    border-radius: 3px;
    cursor: pointer;
    }
    .button:hover {
    cursor: pointer;
    }
    .button:active {
    background: #e5e5e5;
    \-webkit-box-shadow: inset 0px 0px 5px #c1c1c1;
    \-moz-box-shadow: inset 0px 0px 5px #c1c1c1;
    box-shadow: inset 0px 0px 5px #c1c1c1;
    outline: none;
    }
    </style>

    </head>

    <body>

    <div class=button>

    Click me

    </div>

    </body>

    </html>

    when I click on the div, button:active css style only comes on for a bit, then disappears as I finished clicking. Is there a way to make the <div> looks like it is staying pressed with just CSS? Assuming I can't use html or javascript. Thank you.

    Concerned about performance as a junior developer

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:42 PM PST

    (This was also posted to r/cscareerquestions)

    A bit of backstory: About a month and a half ago I started working as a full-time junior developer at a non-tech company. I've been programming (JS, React, Node, etc) for about a year or so and my college degree is unrelated to web development. I'm pretty fluent in HTML and CSS but JavaScript is still quite intimidating for me (to be fair, I've improved a lot over the past month).

    During my first on-site interview my boss casually said that he "wished he could hire me right now", and it was definitely a booster to my confidence. But I knew that I shouldn't get my hopes up. I got the job offer a few days after my second on-site---I was surprised because I thought I wouldn't hear back for another week.

    When he introduced me to his boss, the guy said: "Isn't this the position you've been trying to fill for a while?" Boss: "Yep, but now that u/symbiosa's here they'll be helping out." Once again, I was humbled but at the same time was intimidated by this statement. It's as if they're expecting "good" things from me when I'm just a junior and barely started.

    Him and I are the only developers, at a company that's about 300 people in total. There has been an intern before but he's currently back at college. The company did extremely well last year and I have a feeling that more developers will be added but not for a while.

    I'm posting here because I'm anxious about my performance since I started. I was tasked to work on a project about a month ago, and even though I got the majority of it done I still felt deeply frustrated that I didn't finish it, especially since my boss had been helping me out (when he had free time).

    I have a deadline for a new project that is rapidly approaching. Even though most of it is done, I'm concerned that I'm going to miss the deadline (maybe by a few days or so). Moving my compiled code from our developer box into another dev environment is highly tedious, and has definitely slowed down my workflow. The other dev environment is also different than what's on the dev box (ahem...IE) and I've had to adjust my code as if I were starting from scratch.

    My boss knows that I'm a junior, and knows that I've been asking him questions for help, but I'm concerned that perhaps this particular project was a bit too much, or that I should've given myself more time to work on it (I got to set the deadline).

    Can missing a single deadline be enough to jeopardize my standing in a company, even as a junior-level developer? Should I have been given a smaller project to work on?

    Since my boss was the only dev for a long time, he has a ton of projects that are backlogged (perhaps past their deadlines, but I can't say for sure). I don't want me missing my deadline to mean that he can't work on his own projects.

    Best Website Hosting?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:33 PM PST

    Hey guys, TIA for any help, and sorry if this isn't the perfect sub, I just figured you guys would have some good info for me.

    My company currently uses GoDaddy to host our website. They are reasonably priced so we went with them. The problem is, I noticed a couple weeks ago, they have removed all of our ALT tags from the site. Entirely. Now they want $1,700 to change platforms because "the current platform is old and doesn't support ALT tags"

    I am thinking about changing hosting services, since these guys must use some magical HTML codes where ALT tags don't exist until you pay for them.

    So yea, I think I want to switch. I'm entry-level-savvy with basic web design, but don't really want to spend a lot of time on designing a site or maintaining one, so please keep that in mind. We only really need 4 or 5 pages, and there is no shopping cart or anything. right now we have a contact us table set up, but not even really sure if we need that either.

    any suggestions of hosts or anything else would be greatly appreciated!

    Scared about changing jobs, am I ready?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 11:43 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

    I have been in web development for 3 years now. The first year I learned everything I could, the second and third year up untill now I have been working as a developer in a creative agency.

    My problem is that this last year I have been very invested in learning new things such as Node or React...And I want to expand a bit and to grow. My job is very stable, I do what I want with a few websites, I decide the approach on things but I find myself bored some days, it is always Wordpress and while I have learned so much, and I value Wordpress for many things, I don't think I will create anything other than that anytime soon.

    Another thing that bugs me a little bit is that I am the only developer here so I cannot talk about code to anyone, no one really knows what I do and I don't benefit from working with senior devs...

    Like I said, I am a bit scared though because I still have some imposter syndrome and I am just too comfortable here, but a part of me would love to grow in the job, not just at home afterwards with courses and personal projects.

    Has anyone been in this situation before? What have you done?

    Also this is my website, do you think I am ready to take on more than a Junior position as a Wordpress developer (it is built with CSS Grid, SaSS, Flexbox, ES6, bundled in Parcel and deployed on Netlify)?

    FOUC - Why does it happen?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:24 PM PST

    I'm currently building a simple static site using Hugo.

    When visiting it in Firefox, and occasionally Chrome, and especially when doing CMD + Shift + R a few times, I end up with a flash of un-styled content.

    I only have 2 CSS files in the head and one JS in the footer, however the flickering still occurs.

    My question is this: if CSS is render blocking, why does this happen?

    Here is the link in question for anybody wanting a closer look. I have moved the JS into the head now to see whether that fixes it, but the issue still persists.

    Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Webstore stack

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:03 PM PST

    Hello, Imy friend asked me to do web store and I need to choose my stack, currently I am about to use:

    • MariaDB for database, because I know MySQL, but not huge Oracle fan
    • Djando as backend, because writing in Python is fast What I should use for simple frontend to have some nice animations, but nothing fancy? Is it possible to do it in 2 months with no prior exp in WebDev (I have general experience in programming)?

    Authentication service for webapps

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:48 PM PST

    Hi All

    I am looking for a very quick, easy, extensible and (obviously) secure service to handle authentication. I know about auth0, but I find their offering too expensive and also extremely complex. Is there any other alternative?

    If I can't find an alternative, I am thinking of building such a service myself. I wonder: Does anyone else feel like I feel (i.e. that there is no cost effective simple auth service) or am I unique in feeling this way.

    Looking forward to a good debate.

    Edit: I forgot to add firebase. Firebase is HUGE (almost 500kb, un-acceptable for a webapp). It's documentation is also really bad.

    Binding to DOM Events in Angular

    Someone asked me to make a website and I don't know how much to charge them

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:11 PM PST

    Hi everyone! I'm not a web developer, or at least I wouldn't call myself one, but I've been playing with WordPress and HTML/CSS, JS and PHP for a while now, and I got an offer to make a website for someone. It starts as a full screen slider show, then a drop down menu at the bottom of it, and a gallery of all their work. (They install cabinets, like kitchen cabinets and stuff)

    So, it took me about 4 days to make this work, and I spent probably around 6 hours a day on it. Based off of this information, how much should I charge them?

    I live in Los Angeles, USA. The client is from here as well.

    Not sure which DB to use for my maps app

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:05 PM PST

    I'm trying to make an app that will let users add pins to a map and view pins that other users have made.

    The app will let users make pins with certain data and view pins that other users have set. The client will fetch all the pins for an area and render them on top of the map and when the user makes a pin the pin data is sent to the DB and fetch-render cycle is run. The app is using MapTiler Cloud—thoughts?

    Right now, I think all the pins should be stored in one Collection (NoSQL) or Table (SQL), with each pin containing its data and the user ID that made it. The User Collection or Table will just contain the users haha.

    I'm looking for a managed DB.

    NoSQL: Mongo (is ACID now), FireStore**, DynamoDB, MarkLogic*, and CouchBase*(.

    SQL: Cloud Spanner, CockroachDB*, managed PG (DO, GCP, AWS, Aiven, etc)

    *I don't the pricing on these

    **Firebase Auth comes free with Firestore which is a big plus. (auth tips?)

    Freelancer Help!

    So I've been freelancing for a few months now and I've just been asked by a potential client to estimate how much and how long it will take to create 30 landing pages that have GoogleAds.

    I'm just wondering typically how much the freelancers will charge and how long do you estimate it will take to do.

    I know it's a huge project and I know it will take a while to do but I'm just looking for an estimate.
