I wrote an article that showcases the projects that I did in the months leading up to me getting my first web dev internship.

Be welcome to inspect the Github repos and the websites (included with every project in the article).

The main point to take away from this article is that you don't need to have these massive, good-looking projects before you start applying for jobs.

Many of you are already really good at web development and create better projects than the ones I have done in early 2018.

So just start applying, you might be surprised how much better you are than the competition!

How can I make sure only my own app uses my API ?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 01:45 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm building an API and I'm confronted to a problem. I want my API to be accessible only by my own web app, written in Angular. I looked for different solutions, but there are so many ways of doing it I don't know which solution to choose...

I've heard of Oauth 2, I know this solution is very secure and that it's used by big websites like Github and probably Twitter and Facebook too. But what's making me hesitate is that those big websites need a system like Oauth because they know thousands of services will want to connect to them.

In my case, I only want my own web app. I'm wondering if using Oauth wouldn't be a bit over-engineered. Is there a simpler way of doing it ? I also thought of analysing the request header but how do I know the user didn't modify it (if it's possible) ?

What do you think are the best solutions for my problem ?

    Thanks.

How to think about databases in different environments?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:18 PM PST

I'm (solo) developing a web app where our live database has grown to be quite large, clocking in at several gigabytes. I'm now starting to wonder how you would usually separate the live database from the testing and development environments.

So far what I've been doing is every now and then I will run a full SQL dump on the live database and download it to my development server and insert it into my local database. This is becoming unbearably slow.

I've been thinking about a number of different ways to do it instead.

    • Database containerization. Instead of exporting and importing, this would allow for a straight copy of the database, which would in theory be much faster.

    • Data mirroring. Every action performed on the live database is mirrored in testing environment, so the databases are virtually exact copies.

    • Using a smaller dataset for testing and development. Would speed everything up, but would have to be smart about which data to use.

Goes without saying but this is a database not containing any personal information or such.

How would you usually do this? How do large companies do it? Could you perhaps give the test environment read-only access to the main database? Surely a lot of companies have massive databases that simply can't exist in so many versions.

    Is p5.js respected?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 11:45 AM PST

I feel around school lots of the "pro" web developers laugh at p5.js, claiming they can do everything it offers with CSS and other libraries/frameworks.

I love it, I spent lots of time making look visuals and effects in Processing and now that I am starting to dabble in web dev p5.js seems like a great tool to use.

What are your thoughts? Will I be mocked or considered a noob if I develop with p5.js?

As a web dev, how much do you come across SEO?

I want to start freelancing. What do I do once I've finished a clients website/web-app?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 04:22 AM PST

After you've finished developing a website/web-app for a client, do you just hand them the code and tell them to get it hosted somewhere and buy a domain for it, or do you provide all of that and then give them whatever credentials they need?

Sync Outlook contacts to SaaS app

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:48 PM PST

Does anyone have experience here developing an application that had a Outlook Contacts sync? With Gmail I it's as simple as an API but with Outlook there are local installs, org-wise installs then 365, etc. Looking for some experience shares on services, solutions, etc that can help bridge the gap. Thanks!

Are HTTP 500 responses normal in SOAP?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:12 PM PST

I am very new to SOAP API services. Is it standard to return HTTP 500 responses if there is an issue with the SOAP payload data? It took me a while to figure out that the service we were interacting with was returning error information in the body of the response even though it was also returning a HTTP 500 error as well. My C# code was throwing an error on the HTTP 500 so I never even got to the body. Seems like poor design to throw a server error when the issue is the data in the payload.

Need advice on how to approach small local companies for experience

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 01:35 AM PST

Ok here is some context: I've just turned 20 years old and I'm in my last year of my computer science degree. I've been programming since high school and have been teaching myself different technologies outside of my degree. I've just got my portfolio website up and running (have a look here: www.niccannon.com) and I'm currently finishing off some projects. My grades are also pretty good.

I live in Perth Western Australia and it really sucks for this industry here. There are not a lot of tech companies here and the few that are aren't working on newer technologies (this place has a huge mining industry but I'm not interested in working in it). I'm going to be applying for grad jobs in Sydney as Sydney is probably the best place in Australia for this industry. My dream is to live and work in the USA (San Fran, New York or LA) and thats not going to be easy!

My plan is to finish my degree with good grades so I can get a grad job at a good company (in Sydney) and hopefully make myself valuable enough that companies in the US will hire me.

So how can I better position myself to get a grad job? Whats going to seperate me from the rest of the computer science students? Experience! So I've made a list of the few small companies that are actually located in Perth that do web development and custom software and I'd like to get experience working for them. I'm more than happy to do it for free (100% assuming that I'll be doing it for free). Whats the best way to approach these companies and successfully get work experience at them?

TLDR: I'm in my last year of my cs degree, I need work experience so I can stand out. Whats the best way to approach small companies for free work experience?

    Flexbox question

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 02:52 PM PST

So I am looking to copy Twitter login page as a practice (yeah, I am a noob). I am having issue with the login information section. I chose the display option to 'flex' and then justified the content to 'center'. I just cannot get the margin in between these columns. I tried flex-basis but did not work. Following is the code:

    HTML: <div class="container"> <div class="username"> <input type="text" placeholder="Phone, email, or username"> </div> <div class="pass"> <input type="password" placeholder="Password"> <a class="forgot-pass" href="">Forgot password?</a> </div> <button class="top-btn">Log in</button> </div> CSS: .container { display: flex; justify-content: center; } .pass { display: flex; flex-direction: column; } .pass a { padding-top: 7px; font-size: 13px; } input[type=text], input[type=password] { font-size: 15px; outline: none; border: solid .5px #d3d3d3; padding: 10px; } .top-btn { background: white; border: solid 1px #1ca4ec; border-radius: 20px; padding: 10px 5px; width: 70px; height: 40px; color: #1ca4ec; font-weight: bold; }

This is what I want: https://imgur.com/bBUR0D4

This is what I am getting: https://imgur.com/GIis7Ge

How to get front-end to "interact" with back-end in mobile web application

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 02:11 PM PST

    Hello,

As the title states, I would like to learn more about how an HTML/CSS/JS front-end interacts with a .NET Core back-end for a mobile web application I am working on. There are a few things we would like to do regarding data, but all just CRUD operations. I am wondering how I can begin development on a HTML/CSS/JS front-end to ensure compatibility with a .NET Core back-end, as I'm not sure if there are any API's/Frameworks I should be installing/using.

I'm sure it's just a matter of getting the right API HTTP requests (POST and GET) but I'm not entirely sure as I'm fairly new to web development.

Would anyone have any sort of examples they could show me? I would really appreciate it!

    Beginner ecommerce site?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 01:55 PM PST

I'd like to create a simple online store, partly as an exercise for learning web development. It won't need to deal with a whole lot of products and probably won't get very much traffic. Payments can be done with only paypal.

I know a little bit of PHP, javascript (including some Angular 1), and SQL. At first I tried to make the whole thing in Angular and a postgres database from scratch and then started to tie in paypal. Then I realized that the way this is usually done is with an ecommerse platform, so I looked into Opencart, but found that it couldn't give discounts for buying a certain number of different products (different products that are the same price and share an attribute). I would have had to buy some plugin, but my goal is to learn how to be a web developer, not buy solutions.

After this I started looking into wordpress, but I'm not sure if it can handle this type of discount that I want either (without having to pay for something).

So my question is how would you recommend I go about making this relatively simple online store, with the condition that it handles giving discounts for buying a set number of different products (that share some attribute). I really don't want to pay for anything, and I want this to be a learning experience whereby I can gain valuable knowledge that I can use in the future.

    Mac OSX Visual Studio problem

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 01:04 PM PST

    Hey guys.

Recently I've had my macbook burned and I got another one. I've installed VS Code, and was disappointed to see that I couldn't use Cmd+Shift+Click to go to some Component (ReactJS), or even some imported function.

For example, if i have this

    import { someRandomFunction } from 'utils/random';

I'd like that, like i could do on previous machine, Cmd+Shift+Click on `someRandomFunction` and utils/random.js would open with that function in view.

I've tried googling, tried stackoverflow, but no success. Anyone managed to fix similar issue? Thanks!

Need help picking a new map visualizer and plugging it into Wordpress (novice)

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:52 PM PST

I'm looking for a resource to plug in an interactive map of clients (organized by google fusion tables, also looking for an alternative to that since they're shutting down this year) into our company's Wordpress site. Minimal web dev experience but I have an CIS degree.

I want the user to be able to interact with the map, click an available pin and have a little expanded text box with the client's name (we work for cities so we're not giving personal info)

Any and all help is appreciated!

    Using PHP with JavaScript files?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:29 PM PST

I can't seem to find the answer to this on the internet, but maybe I'm not wording it right.

    When I do something like:

    alert("<?php echo "Hello"; ?>");

In a .js file, I get the literal string "<?PHP echo "Hello"; ?>"

    However, if I do the EXACT same thing in a <script> tag, I get "Hello";

Why can we not use PHP within .js files? Or maybe a better question is 'How can we use PHP in script tags'?

Confused. Software Eng student. Need your advice.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 11:40 AM PST

I'm a beginner with background knowledge in Java.

I've been reading Murach's javascript book; however, I noticed that a third of his book teaches JQuery and how to use it. After verifying online from peers like you, it seems the concensus is that my efforts might not be productive.

What book can you guys recommend I should read to learn vanilla Javascript? Or do you think I should stick to this book?

I apologize if this question seems stupid but I really value your honest opinions/feedback and I don't know anyone I can really trust in my surroundings. So I am hoping to learn from you as there's tons of passionate people on here.

    Thanks in advance.
