Do you feel like webdev is the wrong path for you?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:09 AM PST

I always loved programming, but never really liked webdev. I got in to it because I got a part-time job offer when I was a student and then just kept working in this field. It was the thing I was best at and there are endless jobs in this field over here.

Now I work as a full stack developer and am getting increasingly more bored. My job isn't bad at all and my boredom feels like it comes from webdev rather than my job. I straight out dislike front-end dev, and back-end dev isn't particularly exciting either.

I enjoy getting interesting problems and having to think of unusual solutions. Instead, webdev to me is basically finding the best way to shape and pass around data and displaying it in a list or something and learning libraries that mostly do this for you.

Has anyone else gotten tired of webdev? What did you do? If you did something different, how did you get in to it?

Edit: my problem isn't really about my work being boring. I actually enjoy it quite a lot (or as much as one could enjoy office work).

My complaints are mostly regarding the programming aspect. I live for programming, but web dev problems aren't very stimulating. It mostly involves wiring stuff up, using frameworks in the right way and using Google to find out how to do that. This is rather repetitive and doesn't require you to think very hard.

What's the best way to handle an open source project that uses an API that requires a key?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:29 AM PST

I have a cool thing I'm working on that uses Reddits API which uses API keys so you don't call the api too often.

The project is open source and on Github, but what's the best way to go about contacting the API?

I assume people set up a private server to proxy the calls, and that private server only accepts requests from the project? How would I lock this down to only accept requests from the project (that's a desktop electron app) and also allow devs to pull the source and develop other features locally?

Or maybe I've got this all wrong and proxy server is not the way to go, any help appreciated!

Interviewing for a Jr. Front End Wordpress Web Developer Position. How is this different from a regular Front End Position? What questions may I get asked in the Interview?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 07:34 AM PST

Anyone work in a position like this? The company I am interviewing for mainly only uses Wordpress for their site designs. What are the differences I would see in this field than in a regular Front End Position? Obviously I will be working with Wordpress which I am comfortable with, majority of my sites have been made through Wordpress. Just wondering what new challenges I may be faced or what questions may be brought up in the interview? Thanks!

How do sites like social blade pull subscriber counts so frequently without being blocked by rate-limiting?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:56 AM PST

Social blade keeps track of hundreds of thousands of youtube channels' subscriber count, view count, and update them frequently(I think 1 hour). That is at least 100 API calls per second. They even have a live subscriber count function that updates every second.

    How is that even possible?

Trying to propose web solution to my company but another IT says otherwise

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:20 AM PST

The company I am working for is looking into a new warehouse management system. Basically, they need a software on their RF scanner running Windows essential to do all CRUD operations. I suggested that we can use a web app running nodejs on the backend. The point I use to argue that a ebb solution is better in a warehouse is better because the software is centralized and doesn't need individual updating, maintenance, and patching if a bug is found.

However, this other dude suggest we develop an installable app to be installed individually on each OS on the RF scanner.

What do you guys think is better?

What happened to the seperation of content and design?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:08 PM PST

I used to create small websites 10-15 year ago, and have only done some personal websites for friends in the past years.

Recently I got interested in the current state of webdev again and looked on how some frameworks are implemented.

When looking at Bootstrap, Bulma and the likes I realized that there is quite a lot of divs whose sole purpose is to contain other divs (that are containing other divs..) and that a simple button or form has 5-10 different classes setting it's design properties.

I was wondering: what happened to the back-then highly promoted seperation of content and design?
Is such strict seperation as was promoted via e.g. csszengarden.com not as desirable anymore, and why?

Is there any approach to accomplish the forementioned seperation in any framework or standardization methods (is that still a topic for the CSS developers?

[noob] how would go about creating a site like this?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:59 PM PST

sorry for the major noob question, but I like the way this site looks for a personal portfolio and i was hoping to get an opinion on how I could go about recreating it.

    site: https://www.ybrikman.com/

would it just be a site coded from hand? or would a good approach be to use something like wordpress for the blog section? just looking for a direction to start. thanks!

Looking to give my friend some appreciation for his hard work learning code

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:26 AM PST

    Hello all!

I have been giving one of my friends lessons in Front-End Dev for about 3 months now. Recently I challenged him to make a rotating gear. Once he did it originally I noticed that he missed a lot of potential fun stuff, and he had a mechanical engineering background, so I introduced him to sass loops and challenged him to make a solution that wouldn't require setting all of the teeth in different calls, to make a loop to position them appropriately.

    I think he nailed it!

I have been giving him constant praise and such for sticking this out and giving this his all - but I am sure he would appreciate it from other people!

Is there a keyword database for different hobbies, fields, or interests? example in description

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:56 PM PST

Lets say I make a youtube video about music production. Then I put the appropriate tags on it. I could miss some things to include that aren't specific to my video, so it might be helpful to have a database that could suggest tags or keywords.

Right now I basically just keep text lists and add to them as I think of things, but a website of keywords would be cool.

I know this question isn't exactly web dev, but i figured people who know SEO would know if something like this existed.

What theoretical books do you recommend?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:59 AM PST

I am looking for more theoretical books, which do not have to do with a specific language etc. and that is related to web development.

I found two interesting so far: HTTP definitive guide and one of database design.

I will be grateful if you recommend me some.

PS: I also found one about API's, and since they are all in JSON, I also think that books of this type fit into what I'm looking for.
PS2: By theory, I mean: anything that explains how technologies work, but without using any specific programming language, and that focuses more on the details and how it works, and not in practice

SASS watch error, not sure what's causing it?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:12 PM PST

--watch is not allowed when printing to stdout. Usage: sass <input.scss> [output.css] sass <input.scss>:<output.css> <input/>:<output/>

The .sh file looks like this:

    node app.js & sass --watch . & cleanup() { pkill -P "$$" } trap "cleanup" SIGINT SIGTERM EXIT wait

Not quite sure what this error means. I've tried searching online but nothing useful has come up.
