"A Numbers Game": A Visualization of my 2019 Internship Search

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:23 AM PST

    Inspo /u/tsmaomao

Saw the above post and decided to make my own.

Like OP, I too spewed a fuckton of apps willy-nilly across the internet's job boards.

Despite our drastically different academic backgrounds (top 10 US vs crappy regional university) we seemed to have incredibly similar results, even interviewing at a lot of the same companies (final round at LinkedIn this week for me).

Edit: Just to clarify, I didn't track the sector (finance/tech) past the initial applications. So the position of the 'Ghosted'/'Interview'/etc streams don't match the industry.

Edit 2: The application straight to offer was a return offer from last summers internship

What am I supposed to do when rejected over the phone?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 10:09 AM PST

First of all: I absolutely hate being called to schedule a phone call just to find out they're rejecting me. It has happened twice so far. I have cried on the phone. They start out by wanting to discuss "the next steps." In the actual call, they say I didn't make it. Next they ask if I have any questions or want to talk about it. I just say "ok, bye" while trying not to cry. I have another phone call like this scheduled for today. What exactly are they expecting me to talk about?

I feel like every "entry-level" job posting is asking for someone to hit a dozen targets with a single shot. What do I really need to be able to do?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 12:41 PM PST

So, I graduated earlier this year with a CS degree, sadly no internship (work full-time at day job), but with a great GPA.

I've really been struggling with the market because everyone seems to want a mountain of skills, skills which I'm sure I could pick up on the fly (in most cases), but every time I get an interview, it's been some odd ball situation, "code out loud over the phone, and be specific as you can" or "we were hoping you'd know more about lasers".

WTF...? Nothing in the description about lasers...

I have a functional knowledge off a lot of languages, not a ton of experience, but some, but I always feel so inadequate for half the jobs I apply to.

Is there anything I should really focus on that I have to know for a entry-level coding job?

I keep trying to supplement my skills in the meantime, but what is enough or what isn't enough?

[Programmer / Age 22] What would you do if you had a lot of downtime at your job?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:03 AM PST

This is my first job out of college. I have been working here for about 10 months now. I have noticed that I get a ridiculous amount of downtime and I find my self just sitting at my desk being very bored. Where I work still uses the Waterfall method and uses a very old stack. I am trying to move out of state in the next couple of years and I don't think just sitting around all day is going to give me the best experience nor will it help with my impostor syndrome. If you were in my position, what would you do?

I don't have a degree in cs but have a good degree in math and physics and have been teaching myself nlp. How many papers should I write before applying to grad school or looking for an nlp job.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 05:22 PM PST

I have my own algorithms for classification and iterative refinement of words indicating certain sentiments for unsupervised sentiment analysis. I haven't worked on neural networks but I'm almost there.

Currently I work in a math heavy industry and write my own programs to do intensive statistical calculations.

I have taken the GRE already and scored a 160 on both reading and math sections.

Do I have a shot at a decent nlp grad school or a job in nlp?

P.s. I have my own code projects as well but I wanted to make at least 7-10 code projects and write papers on those if they work.

Does HR offers salary or hiring manager?

Who sets a salary offer from a big financial company? Is it HR or hiring manager? Does hiring manager know how much a new employee would get paid?

    Programming Language Theory Jobs

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:21 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I'm currently an undergrad, with 2 terms of school left (but I won't be graduating until Spring 2020 because of co-op). I'm very interested in getting a Programming Language Theory related job when I graduate, for example writing a static type checker for Ruby or working on a JS engine.

I guess my question is, how do I get a job like this? Do I need a Masters for some of these jobs? What sort of places hire PLT people? From what I've been able to find: Some companies have their own DSLs, anyone with a browser has a JS engine (MS, Fruit, BigG, FireFox), and there seem to be internal tools (like some of the stuff at FB or BigG, or the static type checker for Ruby). Anything I missed?

Currently, I've been taking relevant classes at school and working on my own PLT themed projects. Feedback is especially appreciated if you work in (or have worked in) a PLT type job.

Any thoughts about the Chick Fil-A Software Engineer role?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 10:56 AM PST

Hey, everyone. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with being a software engineer for Chick Fil A? I graduate next semester and am currently applying for this. I have received a hackerrank challenge recently, but I have no idea how hard the questions are or how it is being a software engineer working there, since details online are pretty scarce.

Daily fundamentals to improve CS Skills

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:47 AM PST

I spent 10 years in music before changing my path to computer science and engineering. When I was in music there were always plenty fundamentals and practice books, basically shit that you should practice every day to be a better musician (scales, technique stuff, etc).

What CS fundamentals/ techniques would you group together as a practice schedule?

No negotiations at all from the HR, did i ask too low?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:31 AM PST

2 yrs of experience (1 year of intern, 1 year full time) and I'm not in the US so i'll just use fake number here.

They dont have any salary information on their glassdoor page.

I have 2 numbers in mind, my 'high-ball' number is 160k, and i'll accept as low as 120k.

When they ask, i said 160k obviously. They decided straight away to give me 160k. I dont expect it to be that easy tbh. It makes me wonder if i asked too low? I got a feeling that they'd even give it if i asked for like 180k or 200k.

Now, 160k is already more than the top companies here are willing to give. But still, i wonder if this company pay more than that to their other employees. Opinion? or hv anyone ever experienced this?

What didn't you know coming out of college?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:14 PM PST

So my final project for a class is a simple web app.

I literally didn't know what a servlet or http request was before about a week ago. I didn't actually know people wrote server backends in Java until literally this month. I don't know how the fuck I'm going to hobble together this piece of garbage from scratch because I literally don't know what I'm doing at all.

I feel like this is all really common knowledge and it's a huge red flag that I didn't know any of this. There's probably a giant list of stuff I'm supposed to know that I never even thought of.

Would you rather intern at Intel or Tesla?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:44 PM PST

Intel (OR) internship is closer to what I'd want to do full-time, but I don't know if Tesla (CA) would look better on the resume for other reasons?

Prestige of Salesforce Internship not in SF?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:17 PM PST

Does it matter which office you work at if I'm hoping to get more callbacks for new grad internships? I'm going to be at Salesforce in Burlington MA.

I'm also curious how easy it is to transfer to another Salesforce office location like SF if I wanted to move (for those who get return offers)

Help Picking Between Quant, Tech, and Grad School

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:03 PM PST

So I'm currently a masters student at CMU graduating next spring and I'm very lucky to have offers from Jane Street, Dropbox, and Robinhood for a full time position. That being said, I'm very conflicted between my choices (as they're all pretty different in both domain and culture) and I've heard many various things about them from my friends. On top of that, I'm also conflicted about eventually going for a PHD. I was hoping someone with experience at any of these companies can talk more about them and what they were like.

JS has the highest comp, followed by dropbox and robinhood. At the same time, my experience at previous internships has led me to believe that my preference in work goes the absolute reverse way. I also got a weird vibe from JS when interviewing with them, but I'm not sure how valid that is. I'd like to know more from first-hand experiences with these companies.

A company doesn’t reimburse for the travel expense.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 05:24 AM PST

I have passed online tests and invited to their office in US.

However, they didn't include anything about travel expense reimbursement. So I have asked them, they told me if you are tech position, we don't cover for it. If you are non-tech position, we do pay for it.

This is FAANG in Japanese office. Should I pay for my air ticket?

    Optum Technology Development Program Internship

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:55 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I recently got an offer for Optum's (United Health Group) Technology Development Program internship and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this program and could tell me if it is worth it to take the offer. I have two weeks to get back to them but I also wanted to wait to hear back from other companies that I applied for. For context, I am a freshman CS major and so far, Optum is the only company I have interviewed with. Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Finding internships as a sophomore

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 05:48 PM PST

I just wanted to learn more about other people's experiences in internship hunting as a sophomore. Every now and then I see sophomores posting on this sub about how they have an internship lined up already, or better yet, have multiple to pick from. I on the other hand have not had much luck at all. I've applied to around 30-40 internships, which I know by some counts is not even enough. Some reject literally in a matter of days, some completely ghost me. I'm nervous I have not applied to enough internships and that I'm too late right now. I really would like to work on the East Coast once I graduate (for various personal reasons I don't want to mention), and I know how competitive it is out there. I just want to be able to have the best background possible to make that come true, and I'm scared if I'm screwed without an internship as a sophomore.

What were some of your experiences? Did you have an internship as a sophomore? How did having/not having affect your chances as a junior? When did you get an offer lined up? Your experiences?

A question to people without a (CS) degree in later stages of their careers

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:52 AM PST

This post is mostly aimed at people who don't have a degree or have a non cs-related degree and are at later stage of their careers, i.e. mid and senior level SW developers.

Have you ever been told (or felt like) your salary is lower only because of your lack of degree?

Have you ever been denied promotion?

Do you think it caused you to hit any other kind of roadblock in your career? If yes, did you manage to overcome it? How?

    Relocating After College

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 12:10 PM PST

    Hello all,

I'm a senior CS major at the University of Pittsburgh that's set to graduate in the spring of 2019. I love this city, but my heart is set on living somewhere new. For someone whose resumé isn't especially exciting (lots of upper level CS class, a math minor, 3.67 GPA, 1 internship this past summer, 2 "passion projects") with $0 and lots of debt, what's the best way to seek out tech jobs in places like Seattle, Denver, and San Diego?

    Thanks for any info/pointers,

    - X

Is it possible to receive a rejection email for one position but still be in consideration for a different one at the same company?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:18 AM PST

I applied for two positions with MSFT, one Canadian and the other in the United States. I interviewed at Redmond and thought it went pretty well. 2 days later I received a rejection. However, when I go on action center on Microsoft careers it only says 'Not Selected' for the Canadian position and the US position still says active and in review (interview exactly 1 week ago). I obviously asked the recruiter that sent me the rejection but haven't heard back. Is there still a chance?

Career expo stats, I think the best way to find an internship

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:51 AM PST

I'm using a throwaway because I'm giving some specific info

So I see people sharing their job hunt stats (applications/callbacks/interviews/etc) and I thought I would chip in my experience with a job fair at my University. I attend the Ohio State University, and I went to their engineering expo to try and find an internship. I printed out 20 resumes, and gave out all of them, and then left when I was out of resumes. So I spoke to 20 companies.

    I got: 5 interviews with

    Texas Instruments

    Fast Enterprises

    NuSoft

    Dish

    JB Hunt

Texas Instruments offered me a second interview, but I cancelled because I had already accepted a position.

    I received offers from:

    Fast Enterprises

    NuSoft

    JB Hunt

I didn't hear back from Dish. (Rip)

I hope this helps people see how valuable a career expo can be! Please do not ignore them! I think they are the single best resource for finding jobs.

What makes the effort in an open source project considered as "Open Source Contribution"

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:29 PM PST

Hi all. I am currently thinking about how to write a good cover letter as a new grad and what kinds of topics we should go over in cover letter instead of stating "I think I am a good fit", "I am enthusiastic" etc.

And This question has come to me and I think I can't answer it by myself. I will give you an example that tiggers me to ask this question.

    Here it is:

I have opened an issue in omnisharp-vim project (it's a vim plugin). After some discussions with the main developers in that project, I decide I will get into the vim-script to figure out the problem by myself. I detect ONE LINE of code (an if statement) that can possibly make people unable to use that Plugin. And of course I told them what I have found and they fix that and add an option to directly pass that if statement. The option is currently stated in their main installation instruction for unix-based system.

How should I "advertise" my personal project to employers if it is huge in scope?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:26 PM PST

I just graduated, never had any huge internships, just worked as a software engineer for archaeological projects at my school.

My biggest "selling point" is this personal project of mine. In short it's a search engine for the art market that uses AI to identify art for sale without having to be explicitly told whats for sale in the markup (like how Google shopping works). It also functions as an e-commerce site for art dealers.

The project is huge, I've been working on it for 3 years. It includes a full site written in PHP, HTML, Sass, & MySQL. It has its own API, its connected to Stripe so that customers can buy subscriptions and host their own customizable storefronts. The whole site is mobile optimized, I did the graphic design, the web design, the web dev, literally everything but making the fonts themselves. I also wrote the massive Node.js server and the web-scraping technology that the site is "selling".

How do I put this on my resume when I'm applying to entry-level software engineering and web development jobs? Do I just try to list all of the features and languages I used? Should I mention the scraper technology and AI side of things more than the web development itself? Should I leave out things like the web design that I also did? Last time I tried to put this on my resume it took up a huge amount of space with me just trying to list everything I've done. I literally have no idea how I should describe this on my resume.

My other concern is that I haven't officially released the site. Everything is working, I'll post a link if anyone thinks they need to see, but things like the copy on the about page aren't finished up, and I've heard stats are valued over descriptions of what you've built. Thoughts?
