New free sample pack featuring crunching, tearing, squishing, and biting fruits and vegetables. Great for game SFX and sound design.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:52 AM PST

You can check out the pack right here: https://gum.co/bb_fruitVeg and use the code eat_veggies to reduce the price to $0 for the month of November. There is a video with a showcase of sounds and how they were recorded right here if you are into that kind of thing.

Hey all! This month's sample pack features organic ripping, tearing, squishing and snapping sounds from fruits and vegetables! Recorded with ultra sensitive Lom microphones to get all the gory details.

This pack contains over 150 samples of carrots, celery, lettuce, apples, and peaches getting destroyed up in all sorts of different ways. This pack is incredible for sound design, percussive layering, and general sound effects for movies and games.

These samples were lightly processed to normalize the volume without clipping but are otherwise unedited.

These sounds are public domain (Creative Commons 0). You are free to enhance, reuse, remix, or do whatever with these files. Obviously, linking back to the pack or dropping my name in your credits is encouraged, but not required.

Question about paying YouTubers for coverage

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 03:52 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I have a specific case and I'm hoping someone can give some advice. I tried to find out roughly how much it would cost. I found one link where a YouTuber supposedly asked for $22k. Does any one have any idea?

Recently I finished my first game project and I sent 4 emails to different channels. 3 of them are below 100K subscribers and 1 has almost 3 mil subs. Surprisingly enough, only the 3 mil channel replied. They don't really do reviews but more like first impression 'blind'plays. And they usually do about 150-200K views per video.

They replied back with an open question about the money without giving any specific price ranges. My budget allows me to pay no more than $500 but I'm guessing they won't even reply back to me if I offer that.

The thing is, I don't feel like paying to be honest with you. I thought it supposed to be - hey you get the game for free, if you think it's something you're interested in playing and fits your channel then do whatever you want with it. And this channel covers 2D retro games and 2D indie games a lot. And they are big fans of Contra and my game is my version of Contra basically. If I pay them that means they have to hype my game up and be dishonest. My game is far from perfect. I don't want anyone hyping it up only for it then to get hated. I just want an honest reaction to it and I know they are genuinely as gamers interested in playing games like mine. But they still want the money.

I've seen them covering Cuphead - I seriously doubt the developers or Microsoft paid them, they probably just bought it and covered it for free because it was already popular.

Anyone had a similar experience to mine or have any other point of view different to mine? I'm thinking of emailing a thousand small YouTubers with below 10K subs with keys to my game. I think that way I have a chance of keeping things low budget. And yes I do mean literally a thousand :D

I'll be heading over to work now. When I get back I'll check for any responses. Hoping to get some examples of actual numbers paid. Let's not mention any YouTubers by name though as it is not appropriate.

    Thank you for your time!

WIP Wednesday #110 - Show me your drawing boards (aka... screens)

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:46 AM PST

    What is WIP Wednesday?

Share your work-in-progress (WIP) prototype, feature, art, model or work-in-progress game here and get early feedback from, and give early feedback to, other game developers.

    RULES

    • Do promote good feedback and interesting posts, and upvote those who posted it! Also, don't forget to thank the people who took some of their time to write some feedback or encouraging words for you, even if you don't agree with what they said.
    • Do state what kind of feedback you want. We realise this may be hard, but please be as specific as possible so we can help each other best.
    • Do leave feedback to at least 2 other posts. It should be common courtesy, but just for the record: If you post your work and want feedback, give feedback to other people as well.
    • Do NOT post your completed work. This is for work-in-progress only, we want to support each other in early phases (It doesn't have to be pretty!).
    • Do NOT try to promote your game to game devs here, we are not your audience. You may include links to your game's website, social media or devblog for those who are interested, but don't push it; this is not for marketing purposes.

Remember to use #WIPWednesday on social media for additional feedback and exposure!

Note: Using url shorteners is discouraged as it may get you caught by Reddit's spam filter.

Unity networking advice. Total noob here

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:22 AM PST

After doing some research, it seems a game like Minecraft handles its networking through keeping the single player as a client that is just connected to a 1 person server.

I read that this has issues but it didn't say which.

When researching a game like stonehearth, they say "client server networking" and that they had to go to great lengths to protect the host players computer from evil actors using the game as a way to attack the host. But they didn't say how, or what this means.

As interesting as all of this is, it seems very broad strokes and less informative. Is there a list of all networking solutions, at least by name, that I can research further? I haven't personally found anything like that.

    Resume TCG

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:28 AM PST

Had one of those random odd ideas. Went to a group interview where someone pulled out their Magic TCG cards. When I was thinking about that day later in the afternoon; somehow my brain formed the idea to make my resume into collectable cards. Cards for:

    - Certificates, Licenses, or various other education

    - Past Jobs and experience from them

    - Testimonies

    - Interview Q&A's

    - Awards and story behind them

    - Portfolio examples ( Art, 3d models, Websites, etc.)

While it would be fun creating them, I'm not sure how I could gamify them. I'm sure I could make them collectable cards like baseball cards. But I was curious if it were possible to make it into a game. Likely single player unless I could figure out how to have other players "resumes" come into the game.

So I'm asking for ideas as to how I could make this into a game? Thanks for any thoughts.

Academic Research Survey about a Horror Video Game Experience

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 05:29 AM PST

Hi there, my name is Joel and I'm doing my masters in the field of Human Computer Interaction at the University of Basel. I'm currently conducting a survey about horror video games. In particular, I'm interested in the question why people play horror games and which game elements may affect the gameplay experience. As of now, I'm looking for people, that have played at least one horror video game at any point of time during the last 12 months and are kind enough to help a fellow gamer/student out by completing the survey linked below.

The focus of the study will be about a recent frightening horror video game experience you've had. This particular experience and the corresponding horror video game itself will be the focus of the rest of the survey. The survey will take about 30 min to complete and as a little thank you, you may enter a raffle to win one of 5 x 20$ Amazon gift cards. Obviously, all the information we collect will be stored anonymously so your name will not be associated to your data. All data will be kept confidential, will be treated anonymously and deleted after 2 years.

Note, that it is not important whether you like horror games in general nor whether you often play games of that genre. However it is necessary that you're 18 or older and that you've played at least one horror games at any point of time during the last 12 months.

Here is the link to the survey: https://ww2.unipark.de/uc/xphorror/

I would highly appreciate if you could spare some time and share your experience with a chosen horror game.

I, for myself always loved to play horror games. In my opinion it is extremely important to understand the viewpoints of the gamers of a specific genre to conduct good research about it. Therefore, I would really look forward to discuss my research topic with you in this sub. However, and I hope you'll understand this, I cannot discuss different topics of my study in detail nor gather opinions/input about it in the comments of this post before gathering enough participants for my study, otherwise I might bias my results. Therefore, I ask you to not discuss the questions of the survey nor the answers you'll have given in the comments of this post until I have gathered enough participants, thank you very much. However, after enough of you participated, I would really love to start a discussion about the specific research topic and hear your opinion about it.

Thank you for your consideration and participation in my research project.

    Sincerely,

    Joel Siebenmann

PS: If you are a horror game dev and you would be interested in the results of the study, do not hesitate and hit me up. I will gladly give you the results as soon as possible, but i would really appreciate it if you could fill out the survey in return or upvote the post, so more people can see it.

Edit: It seems that the survey won't get displayed properly on mobile devices. If possible, please use a computer, thank you very much!

Commission Price vs Asset Store Price

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:26 AM PST

So, let's say I'm looking through an asset store... and I find an asset set that I like, but I need more assets that are similiar.

If someone is selling say, 5 3D characters with 5 animations each for $25... what would be a good price to offer commision for 5 additional characters... or say two more animations per character

Certainly, the $25 is less then a commision because the artist has the potential to sell the same assets multiple times... but at the same time, users are attracted to those asset sets due to their low cost... so spending $25 for those shared assest and $100 for the additional commissioned ones isn't nearly as attractive.

Is there a engine/framework agnostic tool for laying out a scene?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 07:02 AM PST

I'm thinking of something similar to https://www.mapeditor.org/ where you can layout objects and specify custom properties, but I would love an app where I can add nodes with a position & size, maybe rotation. Then add sub nodes to that node. Right now the game im coding, I position entities rather manually. Doing this visually, especially for UI would be much nicer.

Simple text-based interactive story engine (like Lifeline) - any suggestions? Unity would be overkill?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:18 AM PST

I have an idea for a story (well, stories) that could work well as interactive 'choose the path' type story/game/apps.

Imagine something along the lines of the Lifeline series of games from 3 Minute Games - wonderful short stories turned into interactive experiences.

Now, I have experience making things with Unity, but that seems like overkill for something primarily text-based like Lifeline.

What engine or development platform might be a good fit for that style of game? Any suggestions?

Anyone wanna chip in advice on the location of my cute/ creepy metroidvania?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:54 AM PST

Ive recently been doodling an idea for a game. Its a cartoon style but its also going to be creepy. [Heres my little bad doodles] (Ideas for a cute/creepy metroidvania https://imgur.com/gallery/LQpPoiV)

Its about a small boy who in some way can see spirits. One day, a spirit leads him somewhere(the main thing I'm trying to figure out) to help him and the rest of the spirits. There is something possesing animals and junk in there and its destroying and turning the spirits.

In the game, you have a blanket wrapped around you that will act as a few mechanics. You can whip it out to grab places to swing eventually and some can glide. There will be different blankets with different abilities. Thin sheets are light so your slightly more mobile but offers less protection. Maybe you can glide with this type. Theres a regular blanket which is kinda in the middle. Probably has no extra just because of versitality. Then theres like a thicker comforter type blanket. It offers alot of protection but slows you and your jump. Maybe also lets you ram dangerous enemies? Anywho, Moving on.

The weapons in game will varry. There will be melee weapons such as a sword made of legos that you will upgrade by finding hidden legos. Theres also your basic gun which is one of those foam disk shooters. Other than that there is items. Yoyo, boomerang, jacks, frisbee. There are others but its just some ideas.

For enemies it will vary quite a bit. Some of the theme is dirty, so i want rats as both enemies and civilians of this world. Not like wearing clothes and stuff but just normal rata that this kid talks to. Whether he can actually talk to them or its just in his head is being debated right now but moving on from that is obviously bugs, ghosts, and possesed things. Maybe a teddy bear with an arm ripped off so you can see the ghost arm. Skeletons of mice and cats and stuff. Anything creepy really. The main enemy I guess is going to referrence the boogie man or something probably. Since you are a kid thats like your greatest imaginary fear. Thats all i have on that end right now but ill get to it more.

The only other things ive been thinking of is collectibles. I know the money is gonna be like gum stick wrappers or something. Plays into the dirty environment. Hidden collectibles include marbles, army men, and legos. Maybe others but none come to mind.

This brings me to the location. I am having immense trouble figuring out a location that incorporates the dark dirtiness as well as the toys and ghosts. One idea was the dump, where there was a civilization hidden underneath. Another idea is the sewer. And then either an abandoned part of the city, or a destroyed city. Maybe after a war or something. Some of these seem very hard to turn into a metroidvania. Thats where i was thinking of getting imput. So if you guys have any ideas that would be awesome. Any ideas about anything really would be cool. Id love to talk to you guys. Thank you.

TL;DR: id like input on a metroidvania game location that would fit ghosts, animals, old toys and be creepy and dirty. Dirty as in gum wrappers are the currency. Btw you play as a little boy. Thanks guys

Game Programming Student Placement interview - what should I expect?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 05:16 AM PST

Hi, I'm a Uni student in my second year. Next year I will be doing a year in industry, hence I've been looking for a game dev placement. I've finally managed to land an interview but have no idea what to expect. He's asked me to bring some code samples too, but I have no idea what kind of things I should bring. If anyone has been in the same position as me before, or has any advice for me, it would be much appreciated.

Tools to manage a large collection of JSON files?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:39 AM PST

Hello Experts! Just wanted to know what you would do under similar circumstance :) So basically I decided not to implement a local DB (like SQLite which I used before for my other games), but instead I'll use a large collection of JSON files to store base data such as items. For example, each item will have its own JSON file containing various attributes and they'll all be deserialized at runtime into Item objects in memory. This way people can also easily mod the game by editing the JSON files.

This method of storing base data is similar to Mongo DB which I use quite a bit for my day job. But I think it's an overkill to implement some kind of "local Mongo DB" because I don't need the ability to query things - all the JSON files will be loaded into objects in memory when game starts. All I really need is a convenient and efficient way to manually create those files.

So I wonder, there must be some tools out there that help streamlining the process of creating and managing JSON data files other than Notepad ++? For example when you already have 100+ JSON files for all the items, and then you decide you need to add a key to all of them - that would be a nightmare to edit all of them one by one!

If you use JSON a lot for your game, what do you use to make your life easier?

Is it too late to change careers and get started in game development?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 07:32 AM PST

Hello r/gamedev, I'm a long time redditor, but just recently discovered this sub. I am 27 years old and currently a veterinarian. I have always had a passion for playing video games and admiration/respect for those who make them. I've found myself unhappy with my current career path and would like to pursue a career in video game development. Unfortunately, my educational background is so far removed from this industry it's hard to find jobs that I am qualified for or meet the requirements for.

I was wondering if anyone has advice on where to start? Given how much school I have already been through I really can't go through another 4 years of college, but would be happy to consider taking additional courses (night classes/online degree type stuff). Ideally, I would really love to work for a big company (Blizzard, Rockstar, etc...) but I fully understand how competitive those jobs are and how hard it is to get your foot in the door. Is it even possible at this point to get into this field, maybe it's too late without going back to school?

I have downloaded unity and started working that some per the how to get started post in this sub, just looking for other comments on how others have gotten into the industry.

Is it worth it to develop idle game?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 07:30 AM PST

    Hey,

I've been developing games for the past 4 years , solo and with friends and made over 10 interactive apps and games 2 of them are on steam and currently finishing up a 3rd one.

But on the side I'm creating a mobile game, an idle game or what others call clicker games.

So I'm actually a fan of that genre, cause it's addictive and a time-killer also depends on the type it can be real fun.

So I'm developing an idle game, it'll be a free one, the revenue will be from ads and potential IAPs.

I'm just looking for some insight from someone who developed such games, I can get pointers about what's best or not to do in these games or anything useful :)
