How I got my first developer job with a 2.55 GPA and no experience

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 07:31 AM PST

A little bit of background info before I get started. Firstly I'm a 26 year old fresh CS grad that completed his B.S. last May. I had a problem with depression during my time at college and didn't really do anything to help myself until my senior year. As a result my grades were dropping all over the board, and I wasn't really focused in my classes. Despite that, I still did a lot of self-taught programming on the side, so by the time I graduated I had a few personal projects under my belt and developed several marketable skills that made me valuable as an entry level candidate. I even developed a personal website to display some projects. But other than that, by the time I graduated I didn't have a great GPA and no internship experience.

My first job offer I got was during a job fair, where I had an on the spot interview, and an on the spot offer immediately after. However this offer was contingent on my GPA being much higher. After sending them my unofficial transcript which already had that GPA, I was sent an official job offer. I thought I was safe, but in August it was rescinded because when I sent them my final transcript they told me that they would not be able to take me on as a developer with my GPA. So here I was, no job, low GPA, and no applications.

Firstly, I rewrote my resume from scratch since I knew my old one wasn't going to cut it, then I started applying like crazy. I spent the next couple weeks applying for jobs, doing code challenges, combing this reddit page, and studying up on my algorithms. 3-4 weeks and almost 300 applications later, the only phone call I got was from Revature (so not really an offer). I was dismal, but I decided to post my redacted resume on this reddit page. Thanks to the great advice I received from everyone here I had great resume. (I'll link to the post at the bottom)

My resume was looking completely different from what I originally had. I started reapplying immediately after I felt comfortable with my new resume, even to companies I had already applied to. I also re-did my website to look more visually appealing. I made the decision to try to apply to 100 jobs a day, and then repost my resume to be reviewed after every 300 jobs, but I didn't even get to 200 before I started getting calls. Two weeks after I started re-applying I had 3 full-time offers:

    1- 65k, full benefits, and .5% equity. (start-up)

2- 80k, full benefits, equity to be assessed based on performance, unlimited paid time off.(start-up)

3- 60k, only healthcare benefits. (Big corporation)

I ended up taking the 2nd option and a month later I'm really enjoying my job. So I guess in the end what really made a difference was my determination and relentlessness, constantly reassessing my process, and most importantly never stopping. Thanks for taking the time to read and I hope others are able to learn from what I went through.

TL;DR: After several hundred unsuccessful applications, I reassessed my process, and got my resume reviewed on this sub reddit and reapplied. In the end I got three offers a few weeks later.

Manager just exploded on me... should I quit ?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 02:03 PM PST

Im a junior developer at a very small company, so theres no HR and I work basically directly under the CEO. Been working there the last 4 months, when I wasnt working from home I always came in on time, if not early even.

I came in 3 minutes late (not exaggerating) and my boss went fucking INSANE! I apologized to him about being late as soon as I made it through the door, and he started screaming at the top of his lungs "theres no fucking excuse why youre late motherfucker, im a fucking professional and im gonna be treated that way, what the fuck are you thinking coming here late mother fucker you dont know who youre fucking with, are you fucking sorry? "

I thought he was joking, all I could think was there was no way someone could be this angry over 3 minutes...It was comically insane.

He went on for a few minutes at least, spit was flying everywhere, spit was flying on my fucking face, there was a river of spit going down his chin, I couldnt believe what I was hearing/seeing.

Anyways, I just got back home, still shook af from it.

    Should I quit?

    I'm a Toxic Manager

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 02:32 PM PST

I work at a gaming startup as a SWE manager.

The past sprint was a great success, according to our CEO (my boss) we got a lot done and the customers are happy. It was great for business

But then I come in for a bombshell meeting. The rest of the employees at the company hate me.

The I'm an offender of a classic nerd stereotype: Negative and Arrogant. People avoid talking to me, they don't ask for advice anymore. Employees in a completely different department that I've never met or interacted with except at large meetings share the same impression.

There's reasons and specifics, but I'm genuinely looking to change my behavior rather than offer a defense. This horrifies me.

I've never been a people person, I'm sure I've just failed at basic social cues and emotional intelligence stuff. I learned most of my management skills from reading books like the Mythical Man Month and Peopleware.

I've heard the comment before in past jobs and my life. The same personality traits has been praised by friends, family and other jobs as "Practical and Confident." It's not something I think can be erased with therapy or something.

I think a difference might be that this is a job in the gaming industry and I spent a lot of my years in finance. This is my 3rd or 4th startup, whereas for most of the employees this is their first.

I genuinely like everyone in the company and feel like they've been kind to me, and I really enjoy this job. If I've bullied anyone it's out of sheer ignorance. But I've apparently been living in some kind of jerk bubble. I really don't want to be a classic Lumberg.

Dear cscareerquestions, how can I not be negative and arrogant?

I hope you'll spare me your worst, but I humbly accept flagellation.

    Thanks.

    My 2019 internship hunt

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:20 PM PST

For this years internship search, I kept a spreadsheet with some info, thought you guys might be interested to see what happened.

    Spreadsheet: https://i.imgur.com/NGhZehf.png

    65 Applications

    49 Non-responses

7 First round interviews / coding challenges

    9 Instant rejections

    14 Total rejections

    1 Offer (!)

I go to a top 20 CS school, have 3 CS related internships, a 3.7 GPA and no side projects. I didn't apply to a whole lot of internships this year because I had a return offer from my internship last summer.

Do programmers/developers with 5-10 yrs exp really earn 200,000$ plus base salaries?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:31 PM PST

I am a mechanical engineer with 5 yrs of experience working in the auto industry. My base salary now is $91.5K and I've heard that people with CS degree with 5 yrs of exp earn close to $200K. Is that even true?

I have been thinking about changing careers for some time now.

How is the tech scene in London? Moving for personal reasons.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:00 PM PST

I know my salary will be much lower, but how is the work environment? Is it less or more competitive than US tech hubs? I've started applying and have yet to hear back from anyone over there. I have three years of full stack experience and have no problem getting interviews in SV.

How long does it take to receive security clearance?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 07:04 PM PST

Going to end up needing secret but I can begin work once I'm cleared for interim. Anybody have any experience waiting for security clearance? I'm thinking it's 4-6 weeks.

Summer internship 2019 grind, 150 applications so far, 2 referrals from big companies, haven't heard anything back except for 1 automatic email rejection and 1 coding challenge. Do companies stop sending out rejection emails now or is it just too soon in the Summer Internship hiring cycle?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:03 PM PST

I'm a community college student in California, transferring soon to a local state university. I did Google Summer of Code in Summer 2018 and that was the highlight of my career so far. I started sending out applications 3 weeks ago. I don't use 3rd party websites like Glassdoor and LikedIn, just go on there to find internships posting and apply directly on the companies careers page. So far I've sent around 150 applications including 2 referrals from big companies. I have gotten back 1 rejection email( not from the referral) and 1 coding challenge, nothing else. Do you guys think companies have stopped sending out rejection emails? It's November right now, Am I just applying too soon in the hiring cycle?

What are your top questions to ask a new startup?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:48 AM PST

A young startup (10-20 people) reached out to me on LinkedIn and the role looks interesting, but I have no experience interviewing with startups or learning more about the company. During the first phone call and throughout the process, what questions do you ask the company to get a feel for its culture and potential success? Are there websites you look at? What are some red flags?

Has anyone moved from an "average" first job to a second job at a more prestigious company?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 07:54 PM PST

I'm currently working at a lesser-known company that I somewhat enjoy, but I know it's not the work I want to be doing in the long run, and opportunities for mobility within the company are limited. I was lately thinking of applying to a BigN because it seems people at those companies tend to have many opportunities to switch around teams if they want, which I think would be perfect for me in terms of experiencing different areas of SWE.

My concern is that it seems easiest to get into BigN companies directly out of college since students are held to a comparatively lower standard than engineers with 1-2 years of experience, and there seems to be an abundance of "new grad" job postings vs. general software engineer roles, which often seem either catered to a specific team off the bat, or requiring more than a couple years of experience (I may be wrong about this though- just my observation).

With all this being said, I was wondering if anyone here has moved to a BigN, or comparable company after working at a company that's lesser known or "average." This is not to imply any company is "better" than another, but rather those that are not as prestigious in the tech world as the BigN. If you've done this, could you share your experience?

Senior year job search: how to time sending out applications if I don't feel I'm hirable yet?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:15 PM PST

I'm a computer engineering major at a public, non-target school in NYC. I'm in my senior year and struggling with how to approach my job search. I'll be applying to SWE roles mostly, but I'm also interested in data science, though a stepping stone job into data science might be more realistic without graduate school.

My issue is I don't think I'm hirable at the moment, but also realize I can't delay applications too much. I have some internships but they weren't engineering or programming(one was tech support, one was in project management/Excel work). The projects I have on my resume are all from classes. My classes this semester and next semester, including my capstone design will give me some more projects, and I have some ideas for side projects as well, and I also have to do interview prep(CTCI, HackerRank, Leetcode).

Should I apply for positions consistently starting now even if I'm not hirable as a developer, or should I work on getting some stuff on my portfolio and apply as my competency grows to positions I might actually get? Right now I'm in a bit of paralysis by analysis and too confused to do anything. Any advice on strategy and how to pace myself and prioritize? Thanks in advance.

Many people say MEAN/MERN stacks (I'm more into the backend) are very hot and are in high demand but why don't I see many job postings for them?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 02:16 PM PST

    - The majority of job postings I found on LinkedIn/Glassdoor require Java more than any other backend stacks (Python, JS, PHP, Rudy). But when people talk about web backend dev, they don't seem to mention Java, C#, C++, etc. at all (they always list Python, PHP, Rudy and recently JavaScript+NodeJS of course).

    - Why is that the case? I want to focus on NodeJS for backend but I don't see many job listings for NodeJS so I am not sure whether I should get back to Java and just learn things like Servlets/JSP, Spring, Hibernate, etc......

    Career Outlook for Virtual Reality?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:58 PM PST

Hey everyone, I am currently a junior dual majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science at one of (MIT,CMU, Stanford, UIUC, Berkeley). I tried on a virtual reality headset today for the first time, and it was nothing short of amazing! I can't stop thinking about it. The possibilities you could have using VR for people with mental disorders, the ways you can teach people new things using virtual reality, how you could help depressed people, etc...

I am so interested in this area I actually registered for a computer graphics course for the next fall at my university. I am definitely planning on getting a masters, and I am strongly considering getting it and specializing in virtual reality.

If anyone has the time (everyone here is probably super busy), is there any chance you could please help me out and answer a couple of questions so I understand this field a little better?

    1) If I have a masters focused in virtual reality, how difficult will it be to find a full time role in VR in industry? (Will I need to get a PhD to get a VR role?)

    2) Are the concepts in the computer graphics course going to be similar to concepts used in VR? In the course it says they use WebGL, which I read was a subset of OpenGL, but I'm not sure how different the two actually are

    3) Will I ever use my math background in VR?

Thank you for any help you can provide!

How to get in to embedded software engineering?

(Graduating May 2019) Should I tell companies I already signed when they approach me for new grad positions?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:16 PM PST

I like looking around and getting a feel of the market and having a chance of better positions so that's why I'm still applying and talking to recruiters. Should I tell them that I already signed pretty quick or just let them know I have an offer.

I need advice on how to get an internship in CS. Please help me.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:31 PM PST

I am a Junior at Ohio State University. I have a really good GPA( >3.5), but I am really having trouble breaking into this field. I have passed coding tests, interviewed, and then I get rejected. I do not want to go to Grad School. I do not know what I can do. All of my hard work feels like a waste of time. I am honestly at the lowest point of my life. I could not get an internship because I was not a Junior, and now that I am a Junior no one wants me because I do not have previous internship experience. I have applied to small and large companies, so I am not being too picky. Please help me.

How to apply for internships, graduated early?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 05:08 PM PST

I just recently graduated this Spring in Information Systems. However, although I know I can get a full time job, I would like to pursue some internship opportunities. There's one catch: I graduated two years early (currently 20). Is there a way around the requirements of internships that require "Junior or Senior", or ways around the "must be in school" requirement? I would really like an internship if I could.

Transitioning from automation testing to software development

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:43 PM PST

So I am currently in a university Co-op program in which throughout my college career I will work on three six month co-ops. I am currently in the process of applying for positions for my first of three Co-ops and have received an offer to work as an automation tester. My ultimate career goal is to become some sort of software or web developer. Would working for six months as an automation tester be a worthwhile decision for both improving my skills as a software developer and appearing more desirable to software companies hiring developers?

How much do Product Reliability Engineers make at Palantir (CA)?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:38 PM PST

I would rather work in software development but if PREs make similar pay, I wouldn't mind trying out a PRE position! This position was titled Product Support Engineer initially, and the sources online are pretty hard to find. Glassdoor and Paysa seem to be skewed, so I don't know if they're right.

    Thanks, all!

[Work culture] Do I need to be worried about being respected as a woman in the workplace?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:07 AM PST

I'm not trying to start anything political, but it is a concern of mine, especially when other people started bringing it up. I'm in my last year of Computer Science and applying for jobs.

Do I really need to be worried? Is that something to really bring up or ask in an interview?

Online resources for specific careers in CS?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:32 PM PST

So I'm pretty far along in studying CS at university and have 3 internships under my belt. I am pretty certain after going through everything I've been through I really want to be a software developer / engineer. However there are still careers like Systems Engineer, Network Engineer, etc that I have no clue what they are like. I have a basic idea but my uni never really went over career paths. I'm transferring to a school that puts emphasis on having a career path but I still am not 100% sure on everything.

Are there online resources that explain different CS careers in depth?
