Please do not ask Scott questions in this thread -- they will be removed. Let's save them for the official AMA on November 15th. Feel free to ask the moderator team any questions you may have about this event here, however.

    Cube.js - Build Serverless Analytics

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:51 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I want to share with you a serverless analytics framework - Cube.js:

    https://github.com/statsbotco/cubejs-client.

I'm one of the authors and would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Cube.js is an analytics layer for applications. It supplies building blocks to add analytics features into your application. It comes with caching, pre-aggregations and all other stuff you need to handle large data sets.

We're launching public beta today, with open-sourced React client and cloud hosted server. We're planning to open source server as well, so it could be self-hosted as a container or on AWS Lambda/Firebase Cloud Functions.

It is visualization agnostic, meaning you can use any visualization library you want.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback! :)

Did somebody ever landed a job replying to those big recruiting agencies spamming phone and inbox ?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 03:09 PM PDT

You know, the one that have a strong Indian accent and where you can hear 100 people in the room... Most of the time it's obvious that they target candidates poorly, as I am looking for my first developer job and they call me with a 8+ years experience requirement, just because I match the React buzz word. But sometimes it's close, like today. And if I say I could be interested, it's 5 more emails, 3 phone calls, asking mostly about how much money I want. (Wait you don't know me, I don't know you lol ) Then, I wonder if it's just a scam, or a waste of time, or should I give it a chance? Anybody ever landed a (good) job with these guys ? Do they even understand the concept of junior lol ?

Is there a tool to measure page load speeds as experienced by users in China?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:12 AM PDT

Hi all. Does anyone know of an online tool--similar to GTMetrix--that can accurately measure the page load speed as experienced by a user in mainland China? GTMetrix allows you to test using a server in Hong Kong. But as I understand, a Hong Kong server doesn't accurately simulate a mainland China server, since they don't have the same restrictions.

    Thanks in advance.

What's the best way to have one external stylesheet for multiple domains that are very similar?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:02 PM PDT

We have a client that wanted separate domains for each department for marketing purposes(I had no choice in this, so I'd rather not go down that road lol). So we built them with similar themes years ago and they look pretty much the same.

We have a new ADA compliant theme that looks exactly the same, it's just completely accessible now, and we want to apply it to all of these domains.

The agency I work for tends to love to make small style changes which will affect all 10ish of the domains and have to be changed on each individual one and that is very annoying.

I'd like to store a stylesheet externally in one spot and apply it to all of them so we only have to change the styles in one spot. Is this a good idea or is there a better way to make this easier?

Typical pattern using AWS for a video platform app?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:13 PM PDT

Hi team. I searched the sub before posting this and didn't find a similar question, so hopefully this hasn't been covered here before. Essentially, I'm looking for some easy to understand resources about the typical patterns, tools, and processes used for video processing, storage, and hosting (CDN?) on AWS (s3, etc) -particularly with a python/Django/Vue stack. I'm also interested in capturing analytics.

All the rescues and documentation I've found tend to be overly complex or include a boatload of extra information for unrelated use cases. I'm not really looking for an explanation fo the different AWS services so much as a tutorial or easy to understand reference for decent programmers (but novice AWS people) who want to understand how to integrate custom video hosting into their app.

Is there any out-of-the box solutions (frameworks, packages, etc) that would help put a custom video hosting with AWS solution together more quickly? (Note: not a service like Brightcove or Wistia_

Thank you so much for any help in advance!

Im not going to spend hundreds of dollars, as this is going to be just a simple personal site/blog site. Any ideas?

    IE10 Flexbox Issue

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:49 AM PDT

So I will preface this with I know IE10 is the tweener spec etc and I have all my css autoprefixed. I am also using the media query @media screen and (-ms-high-contrast: active), (-ms-high-contrast: none) to target just IE10. So what could the issue possibly be?

My issue is my header. It has a logo and then a navbar as is usual nowadays. Everything is fine except the nav. Which may be because I am using position static and 100% width. But all browsers are fine except ie10. both elements are in a wrapper div as well.

Anyways I painstakingly opened ie10 in browserstack and opened up dev tools and added -ms-flex: 1 and it fixed the issue of the nav going off screen. So it looked perfect and I added it to my css cleared cache from the server checked in Bstack but it didn't work. So I tried width auto on top of that and again saw the desired result but when rechecking it the nav was not wide enough.

I am honestly lost at this point as far as fixing this. The logo area is 20% width and using 80% width gave the desired result as well but did not seem to respond correctly. Which I feel 80% width is the right thing to do as I know IE10 has calculating issues.

looping video in header - optimized approach?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:30 PM PDT

    1. Client wants a looping background video in the header.
    2. Most of the header is covered up by an image (ugh don't ask) but the video element would be 'framing' the image on the left and right side.

QUESTION: What would be the most optimal way to do this? Here are the options as I see it:

    • Play a video file (1920x1080) in the bg that is 90% covered by an image - seems like a huge waste both in filesize and processing power
    • Play a smaller video on the left (400x1080), play the same video on the right (flipped)

    Thoughts?

Building out a prototype now but wanted to see if anyone has dealt with something similar. Thanks!

WEB menu'ing systems for running Linux commands

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:21 PM PDT

Does anyone know of a WEB menu'ing systems for running Linux commands. Looking for a an existing project if there is one. My google-fu is not working. Not hung up on if php/javascript/nodejs/python/djago etc. Just looking to not reinvent the wheel.

Simple Example: Push web page button titled ls -asl \somedir command run on local server "ls -asl \somedir" Print output to web page

Even better would be a system that takes variables, using the above example "asl" would each be variables.

    Any ideas

Keeping ad organizing licenses (themes, pictures, etc)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:19 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I develop my own stuff and I use content from Themeforest and pictures from websites who offer royalty free pictures.

Is this any standard way how you organize your licenses? Example: I downloaded this pictures from this website and they allowed me to use the picture under this and this license.
Themeforest has the download site but you can not allocate your licenses to a project - they just say that you can use it for one project.

Is this a way how you keep a catalog of your digital content? I really want to avoid these copyright sharks who just try to sou everybody for any pixel.

Is there an API out there to manage your own custom made ads on your website with analytics, etc.?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:27 AM PDT

I know there are things like Google Adsense that exist but I believe their usage is different than what I am after. I am working on a directory website (custom made asp.net core) and we are looking at allowing our listees the ability to pay for banner ads on the website so the customers of the site will see the listees ad as they search the listings, etc.

We are not trying to serve misc. ads Google chooses based on some selections we make for topics and the like. We want to work with the client on the graphic and then display it accordingly. Google Adsense would just be for serving Google partnered ads, right? I am looking around the site and I don't see options to serve your own ad.

I am just trying to see if there is some software package out there that serves this kind of need. I could create the code to show the banner ads myself but I really don't want to spend all the time on click tracking metrics, reports, etc. that a customer would want to see their ROI if something already exists that we can leverage. Does something like this exist or am I destined to create this myself?

I have tried google'ing but I may just be using the terms incorrectly, I get a lot of ways to host for an ad network with options on what ads to show but not the totally custom owned experience like we are after.

    Thanks for any help!

Options for displaying a web app on a web page

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:02 AM PDT

This is probably a stupid question. However i am creating a node application that will be taking info from a database and displaying them in a fancy way on the front end. However i need to find a way to display this application on a web page within a cms i have never used.

In my noob mind i thought i could maybe turn the app into an heroku app and than that could potentially be called upon from another site.

    Am i stupid?

    [Advice] Cousin Wants Work, But...

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 10:20 AM PDT

My cousin asked me a few months ago for some work. He sent me an example website of what he wanted.
I asked him some key questions. Static pages, dynamic? Forms? Persistent data storage, etc. All he responded to me was "just like the example".
I know this sounds like red flags of a customer who doesn't know anything about what they want, but I am currently out of a job and really need the money.
So what should I charge them? On one hand, he is my cousin and my family is very close so naturally I want to give him a deal. On the other hand, I have no job, need the money, and he seems to have either no idea or a complete idea of what he wants done.
I guess the question is what should I charge? I was thinking about per hour. I'm by no means "professional". The only paid work I've done for work on websites was updating an old website for a local club every month. I have done personal web development however quite extensively, so it's not like I have no experience.

    Thanks.

How do you target marketing to a geographic location which is not in same city and state as your location using SEO?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 10:14 AM PDT

We have a new wordpress website which is a company that does warehousing and other supply chain services to the manufacturers in nearby cities. One of the cities is in our state, and the other two are right across the river in another state. I want to be able to have our website show up when people look for warehousing in those cities, even though I am 20 minutes away in a completely different zip code.

I have looked at SEO's like YAOST and The SEO Framework (hoping it would be a bit simpler), but the learning curve is really boggling my mind. I've looked at Google help for optimization and that confuses me even more.
