Weird interview! Need your opinion :)

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:33 PM PDT

I went for an interview for a Web Developer role for a major travel startup, and the interviewer asked me to implement a Database system from the ground up!

I was baffled of course, and wanted to leave right then, but played along just coz the guy who referred me is a friend.

Was this bizzare Or a completely valid interview question? I really want to know!

What tools are out there for fonts?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:05 AM PDT

Hi, I'm actually new at web dev and I'm just learning the basics but I have a specific issue with fonts, I always spend a ridiculous amount of time choosing a font and I was wondering if there's a tool that allows me to "try out" some fonts, something like what Google fonts do but more complex, the small space where the font is show kinda limits my idea of how the final result would look like.

Also if you happen to know any other page for fonts I would be grateful. Thanks.

Design and Requirements and Test Case Tool

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 02:14 PM PDT

Anyone know of a tool that let's you easily merry a design with basic page requirements all together? Something better than a design file attached to a Jira issue, attached to a functional spec document. I would rather look at the design and without moving away, know where all of the links go, understand the animations, and maybe even easily transition to the mobile version? Also one that is affordable? Could be used by dev and manual tester.

    Performance on dynamically including Js?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:55 PM PDT

How does dynamically including JS in a page influence performance?

What I mean with dynamically including: say you render an array of some data. The mixin that is used to display this data requires some JS. If it's an empty array, aka no mixin, would you still include the JS?

New software to manage local environments?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:45 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

Yesterday I got into a fight once again with XAMPP, which is what I've mostly been using to set up local dev environments. I started doing a little googling around to see what types of software people use to manage their local environments, along with what types there are available in general. I found MAMP which seemed to fix some of the things I hated the most about XAMPP. However I wasn't fully satisfied, and thought this can't be the best we've got after so many years.

In my search for something with a more modern feel and some nice functionalities I found Local by flywheel, which seemed to offer some great things like; clean and intuitive interface, a way to store a setup as a foundation to use in the future, local SSL etc. I got really happy, and though this is probably it, since it said it could be used for non-wordpress setups too. However, after multiple hours of testing I still can't seem to get it to work properly with any other CMS.

So my question is, are there any similar local Host managers out there or do you know some better source that can explain how to use local with either Umbraco, October or Craft? If not, what are you guys using, and how do you set up similar features with your solution?

Thanks a lot! Have a great day.

Turning my dreams into (virtual) reality?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:20 PM PDT

Hi all, non web-developer here. hoping someone has the patience to help steer me in the right direction :)

I believe I have an incredibly lucrative idea for a website/app. It's definitely geared towards a niche market but it's a strong and growing market. The general format is going to be very similar to a "dating website" with profiles able to search for other profiles but (hear me out), for the purposes of linking up people within the farming/homesteading/offgrid/backpacking community. There are a few websites that connect volunteers with farms but mine will have a broader scope and be more focused on finding the right people (romantic or otherwise) to pursue the lifestyle with.

I know how I want everything to look and work but I have absolutely no idea how to find someone who could create it for me. I also have no money. Is this a dream I can start on my own with limited funds or do I have to wait until I've got the cash? How do websites like this make a profit? And how would I go about finding and selecting a web developer to work with? Are most web developers capable of creating a complex site like this?

If there's a better place to post this or other resources please let me know. Aloha.

Too much a rookie to know, but are there times where using a CMS is just a bad decision?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:15 PM PDT

Long story short, I am going to be developing modern web user interfaces for some internal sites for a consulting company to showcase to clients. Aka we have one big internal site that links to different internal sites where we show clients "this is what we did for this project, you can expect this from us." The current sites weren't made by a real front-end web developer. They made them using a CMS like wordpress, so most of it isn't even coded themselves, only some things. My next project/job for them is to make these sites look really good with new UI since I know front-end. I guess the main point of the sites was to show the CONTENT, because it the CONTENT that mattered, but if the site looks like trash, then the customer will be affected. Its like having a presentation in class that's everything you say is great, but the poster/powerpoint is ass. Not a good look...

I just graduated college 4 months ago, so I know basically nothing. I am a rookie with limited knowledge compared to everyone here. But I just don't get the need for a CMS and believe it is a huge obstacle to get the product thats wanted. I understand why it was used previously, but for what I am doing, it's going to make the process hell.

    • The CMS isn't mainstream
    • No real application in current scenario
    • Learning how to do things the CMS way

Foremost, the CMS isn't wordpress or a big market CMS, the resources for it are incredibly limited.

Next, and most obvious to me, a CMS isn't what is needed. CMS has its role, and not just the "create a website if you've never coded." It has its role with being literally a management system for content, which is why wordpress is popular for news/blogs. But a CMS does nothing of need now. The sites don't have pages of content, or articles, or blogs. Nothing that is reusable or would need quick changes. And if so, then just change the code. You don't need a CMS to change one line of text.

Another major factor is having to learn how to code FOR the CMS. If I wanted a navigation menu, I could code it and have a good UI interaction and make it look nice in 100th of the time with just HTML/JS/CSS. Now I would have to learn how to do it with the standards/language/style that the CMS does it. Which would probably require background changes to how the CMS is working, tweaking, fixing things. Not to mention, I need to make all the content inside the CMS and pull it into the page manually (how a CMS is supposed to work). Why would I ever do this when I can code it all without a CMS is far less time?

Just learning how the CMS works is taking hours and hours, before even getting into coding itself.

I get that "this is what we used, and what we still use. we pay for this service. we are going to use it." But I am so dumbfounded as to any practical and useful reason to continue.

It would be increasingly faster to just have a some internal site (literally what the CMS is now) on a server and link the sites to the main one like you normally would. Idk much about settings things up with what server they want to use (this is their job anyway not mine).

Maybe someone is just way over my head. From all I have learned, everything is telling me "why are you trying to solve this problem with a tool for a completely different solution."

And I haven't really critiqued the idea yet because I feel like there is something I don't know and saying what I typed here will reveal that I'm a complete idiot or questioning how they do things will be ill received

Slack board for redditopreneurs, dev, designer

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 09:13 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

With some other members of the chat r/Entrepreneur we have decided to launch a slack board to allow people to directly connect through a project, ideas or just people who would like to share advice and offer help.

We think the biggest lack of chatrooms, is the inability to make specific channels like #brainstroming #SEO #DEV and so on. As there is a lot of good advice and strategies shared by members cross connecting people could be beneficial respecting their own project.

If you would like to join click here

This is not a place to spam other people with scammy message. So please if you join you are willing to help and share your experience with other people.

    Have a great day,

Percentage of non-prior consent vs prior consent and your opinion

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:35 AM PDT

Something I have been mulling about for a while. What's your opinion on the matter of prior consent vs non-prior consent. When I am asked to "MAEK GDPR" for small websites I always explain that to b fully GDPR compliant they need prior consent, in most cases rendering the site useless until the user complies, but that most sites don't bother. I make it very clear what it means. I do this for few reasons:

    • It's more time consuming and thus expensive
    • I hate it
    • I do my part to reduce obnoxious popups and modals on the internet. Hope eventually prior consent will be looked upon as lazily as cookie notice used to

I say that most sites - that appear to have gone through the GDPR hurdles - don't bother to collect prior consent and that's true in 90% of the sites I randomly check (including small bureaus' sites that claims to go 100% in detail on their GDPR compliance work). But this is just my experience.

In your experience, how many small to medium companies/sites are actually compliant in relation to prior consent?

I think I screwed up my EJS really badly and can't figure out how

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:32 PM PDT

Well there it is beneath you. I can render it fine, but nothing propagates into the fields with EJS in it. None of the ejs after the loop is highlighted in VS Code if that matters at all.

I know the loop works though, because I can see 5 card divs being generated - and that's how many should be generated. Maybe something after the loop broke - I just can't figure out what

    <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="UTF-8"> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"> <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="ie=edge"> <title>Results</title> </head> <body> <div class="jumbotron"> <% for(var i = 0; i < results.length; i++) { %> <div class="card" id="<% results[i].ASIN %>"> <div class="col-4-sm product_image" id="<% results[i].ASIN %>"> </div> <div class="col-8-sm product_info"> <div class="product_title"> <a class="product_link" href="<%= results[i].href %>"> <%= results[i].title %> </a> </div> <div class="product_prices"> <% if(results[i].hasOwnProperty('amazonPrice')) { %>} <h4 class="product_price"> <%= results[i].amazonPrice %> </h4> <% } %> <% if(results[i].hasOwnProperty('thirdPartyUsedPrice')) {%> <h4 class="product_price" > <%= results[i].thirdPartyUsedPrice %></h4> <% } %> <% if(results[i].hasOwnProperty('thirdPartyNewPrice')) {%> <h4 class="product_price"> <%= results[i].thirdPartyNewPrice %></h4> <% } %> </div> </div> </div> <% } %> </div> </body> </html>

If it matters, this is the generated html for a singular card div - this is the same across all other 5 divs

    <div class="card" id=""> <div class="col-4-sm product_image" id=""> </div> <div class="col-8-sm product_info"> <div class="product_title"> <a class="product_link" href=""> </a> </div> <div class="product_prices"> </div> </div> </div>
