Can I call myself a Software Engineer ? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 08:29 AM PDT My job title is that I am a software engineer. I have majored in physics from UofT and been working as a software engineer since 2016. Then this glorious PEng guy reached me out on linked in and started to send me messages that I am not suppose to call myself an engineer. I know in Canada there's this awesome community of engineers who go through an engineering program and join the Peng club. I love the work they do, the standard they maintain and I have a respect for people with Peng. But like dude I have my linkedin title as a software engineer because that's what I do at my company. Should I ignore this guy or tell him to fuck off. [link] [comments] |
Is it that bad to quit your job before you have a new job lined up? (San Francisco Engineer) Posted: 27 Aug 2018 03:43 AM PDT I've been working as a full stack engineer for 2 years and 8 months at an ad tech startup. I want to apply for new jobs, and have been studying/leetcoding since February. However, I only get to do leetcode for a couple hours a day since I have my full time job. Should I quit my job so I can focus on studying full time? Most people would be ready for interviews after 6 months of studying, but honestly I'm not smart. I don't think my brain works as fast as other people, so I have to work harder than others to achieve the same results. How bad is it to quit my job before finding a new job? I would rather study for interviews full time so I can retain more of the algorithms that I'm studying. My job is pretty chill (work 40 hours a week), but I find that when I get home, I'm too tired to get any meaningful studying done. My goal is to get into a big4 company or similar big company. So I need all the studying I can get. What should I do? I guess my question is, will it be difficult for me to get a job, if I don't have a job? Will companies care, and try to lowball me? Or if I have multiple offers, companies can't lowball me. Is that true? Thank you all in advance! [link] [comments] |
Doing a bootcamp vs an online master's degree in CS? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:00 PM PDT I graduated as a math major and have basic experience in programming; by basic I mean just the first introductory classes of C++ and Python and that's about it. I want to get back into programming and learn it in a formalized & organized setting. I was considering doing either UCLA Bootcamp or OMSCS's online masters. Both would be part-time while I'm working. Or else, another bootcamp or another masters but bottomline is bootcamp vs master's in CS. Any benefits one has over the other? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Aug 2018 04:57 PM PDT TLDR at the end. I will start as a software test engineer in a company that has been developing a mobile application. My responsibilities will mostly be writing test cases and scripts for our platform and doing automation tests for android and ios devices. I am also gonna be responsible to do load test as the application has reached 1 million downloads and almost 400k users are using the app at the same time. I wanted to be accepted so badly and i am kinda happy that they chose me for the position. Sounds good right? Well, there is a very huge problem. I think I'm too inexperienced for this position. I am going to be the first tester in the company and this scares me a lot. There isn't any other junior or senior test engineer, all the other employees are developers. It is a mid senior position and i don't fell like i'm a mid senior, actually i don't even feel like a junior right now. Previously i had worked as a Software QA engineer in a company for only 3 months and learnt some basic skills in software QA like test automation using selenium (python 2.6), manual testing etc. But all the other testers were way more experienced than me, and I was not able to make any real contribution to the team, and as a result my team leader said i am too incompetent and reluctant for this position. Yes i was incompetent and reluctant. My salary was very low and I was expected to work overtime and even on weekends. Eventually, I got laid off from the job. The person who made the interview, called me today to inform that i got the job. He said "there were people who had better technical skills than you but you seemed the most enthusiastic and therefore I chose you." Yeah great, I am flattered. But how about hiring a senior test engineer? Where am i suppose to start? I dont know. He said we're gonna use Appium. Ok great. I downloaded Appium. But i dont know how to proceed. I dont know the correct configurations. I dont even know the suitable operating system. I used linux mint before. But i mostly use Windows. All in all, I feel like an ant that is left in the middle of the ocean and trying to find its way. I do not know where to start and how to proceed. I have been unemployed for 3.5 months and I assumed my life was over when i got fired. Now, I'll be paid almost twice as much salary than the previous one, and I will not have to do that much work, a job that I can learn more in a less stressful environment with doing less overtime. Definitely don't wanna miss this opportunity like the previous one.. For this reason, I wanted to share my concern with you here and would like to listen to your recommendations. Any advise or guidance would be greatly appreciated. TL,DR: Accepted to a mid senior software test engineering position. I am very very inexperienced, no senior engineer to guide me, and am expected to write test scripts from scratch using Appium, selenium web driver, juint etc. [link] [comments] |
Non-CS Major Trying to Get My Feet Wet Posted: 27 Aug 2018 05:20 PM PDT Hello, all! I'm studying engineering in undergrad, but have a great interest in programming so I've decided to go for a minor in CompSci as well. I've taken a couple introductory courses but don't have too much experience in the field or coursework as of yet. However, I have a little free time this semester and thought I might look for a job in tech to see if a career in CS might be a possibility for me. That said, I don't really know where to start. I don't think I'm experienced enough for an IT job but I know a decent bit about C++, Python, MatLab. Where should I be looking? What should I be looking for? I'd like to see if I could get a job now that would give me more of an edge when applying to CS jobs in the future, if possible [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 06:58 PM PDT Hello World, Onsite interviews give me a lot of anxiety. I am recent grad and looking for my first job. I do prepare myself for interviews but I feel very nervous and anxious leading up to the onsite interview date. Sometimes even the thought of doing an onsite or setting the onsite data make me anxious/nervous. It doesn't seem to hinder me during the actual interview but it does affect me days prior like preparation, appetite, and sleep. I know this may be completely natural since there is a big pressure to land the job but I was wondering if anyone here shared this sentiment and maybe can share ways in which they deal with it. (If so, does it get better as you gain more experience and interview more?). Thanks. [link] [comments] |
InfoSec/Cybersecurity to Software development Posted: 27 Aug 2018 04:18 PM PDT Hey Everyone, I have seen multiple post about Software engineers wanting to go Cyber but what about the other direction? Has anyone done so successfully and enjoyed the switch? I am coming from the InfoSec arena and have a background in network engineering and Sysadmin work. I do have some certifications in InfoSec but I am wondering if it would be easier to go to a company within their InfoSec section then move laterally to a Engineering role. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!!! [link] [comments] |
Difficult people. Industry issue or just my workplace? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 12:29 PM PDT About 6 months ago I made a career change into the world of scripting/programming from my former job as a security specialist. New job is developing SIEM applications and automation scripts. Still security related but on development front rather than risk management. I'm not exactly a brilliant coder but they struggle to find people with the right skills so employ people like me from within rather than spend extra on agency/contract workers. I don't work in a massive team but I seem to find that most people I work with are just difficult to deal with and the wider teams even more so. Most of the guys who I work with are unhelpful and pretty lazy. Only doing the bare minimum to satisfy contracts. Often just working to the absolute letter of what was asked for rather than doing a bit more work to, you know, make something the client might actually be happy with. I hear a lot of 'not my problem, just do what I'm told'. Before security I worked in networking and neither field had these problems. Same company, everyone worked together and helped out. I was speaking to my manager who said it was an industry wide issue. He said that a lot of developers have pretty much been told their whole careers that they're the best and they now just believe they're untouchable. He also said that no one learns to program to develop reporting tools so you get a lot of people who are fundamentally unhappy that they don't work for Google, Microsoft or a game studio. Is this actually true? Or is it just something he's saying to stop me from leaving. I love the job, but the people are unbearable. Because I'm developing security stuff I can switch back to my old job but it's a opportunity that won't be open forever. Edit: grammar. Stupid mobile app [link] [comments] |
Recruiter asks what he can do to get me to sign ASAP. Do I ask for more money? How? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 03:53 PM PDT So I had a call last week and got a verbal offer. He's been bugging me about what he can do to get me to sign ASAP. I'm happy with the offer. Should I ask for more base pay? Signing bonus? How much? How do I bring it up? Is there any negative consequence at all? For context, the offer is pretty much market rate. [link] [comments] |
Where to find a list of well-paying fintech jobs? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:12 AM PDT Hi! I'm a senior who's starting the process of applying for full-time, and I'm trying to figure out what companies in the financial industry pay the most without having to do Google-level prepwork for interviews. I'd prefer to work in NYC or London, if that helps (I'm American, btw). I've heard Goldman is 100k+ in NYC, and JPM is roughly 85-95k. I don't really know much about salaries anywhere else, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I do realize that as the pay increases, the amount of work required to prep for interviews increases, but I'm trying to find places that are achievable rather than somewhere like Jane Street or Google. I have a relatively strong resume, and I've already interned at two well-known banks. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Advice for International Student going to community college, internships, visas, and more. Posted: 27 Aug 2018 04:29 PM PDT Hello, I'm in my last year of high school and planning to study in the US. I plan to go to a community college for multiple reasons. I'm asking for any advice you can give, here are some questions:
Thanks for helping. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 04:21 PM PDT So I was recommended from a friend who is a mid level software developer at a software company here in Nebraska. They interviewed me over the phone and eventually brought me in for another interview. They asked me questions about JS, html, css, the works. I answered most well and completed a fizzbuzz challenge. They said I was right around where they want an intern. This was 2 months ago. They told me to continue to be in contact for updates and check in so they can get their financials in order. My question is, do you think I actually have an opportunity here or are they just screwing me around? [link] [comments] |
How do you find the motivation to study after work? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 02:34 PM PDT So I've been trying to study after work for interviews in the future due to not having a job I currently like. But I always end up being tired after 8hrs of staring at a computer at work and end up being lazy. How do you guys stay disciplined to study? [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have experience with Tekmark? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:46 AM PDT Their recruiter found my resume online and called me on the phone. He said he wanted to apply me for this 12 month contract role for Product Engineer 1 job at google for $37 per hour pay. He sent an email to me after the phone call and asked me to approve it before he sends my application. Idk if this shady so can someone confirm for me? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 08:24 PM PDT What are some entry level IT jobs I can apply to? I'm in business switching to IT [link] [comments] |
Targeted search for internships. Posted: 27 Aug 2018 04:34 PM PDT I am coming off of a coop that broke my junior year in half. This summer I am hoping to find an internship around Austin Texas or Fort Worth due to strong pulls and pushes to live around that area. The internships offered at my school's career fair seem to be centered around the Midwest region so that is where all of my internship experience has come from. Does anyone have some advice for looking at an internship in another region of the country than you are? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 08:12 PM PDT I've recently gotten hired at a company as a junior and was placed on a new project. My team consists of all junior developers whom have never touched our backend language before but some know the frontend stack. The team lead is not familiar with our backend language. The core portion of our project is being written by an intern. Our lead stress rubs their head or yawns at literally everyone else except our intern. Our team lead almost always only agrees with the intern because they know the full extent of our core backend and code because they wrote it. The intern has been here about 2 months longer than the rest of us since the birth of this project and is leaving soon. The only things looked at for our peer reviews are code smells and failed builds (because some unit tests will fail no matter what). I wish I had some sort of mentor or senior developer I could direct questions to. My coworkers are nice but no one really seems to know what they're doing. I've been trying to read books to teach myself as well. What should I look out for in a team full of juniors? What would you do in this situation? [link] [comments] |
How to decide which company I want to join? [SDE, 4 years exp] Posted: 27 Aug 2018 01:57 PM PDT I recently left a job at a startup and now I am looking for a job. I am interviewing with a lot of companies. After all the interviews are done, and I have a couple of offers in hand, how can I decide which one should I join? One of the very important factors for me is engineering culture. (Reference: Learn to write maintainable code instead of getting shit done). I want to join a team where I enjoy working on the core problems rather than fixing regressions and/or spend hours reading code because of lack of tests, code reviews, etc. Besides the above I cannot figure out which factors will be important for me. Some things that come to mind:
I know it is a personal decision, but I want to get a feel for what other people in this community find important and what are the pros/cons of some of the factors I have mentioned. [link] [comments] |
How to keep edge after getting first job Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:50 PM PDT Hi Everyone, I'm happy to announce that as of three weeks ago, I started my first full-time job out of college :) I'd like to thank this sub for all the help that it has given me when I was struggling for finding a job. Now that I found my job, though, I noticed that I have started to slip. It's not that I do bad work, I just don't take the incentive and just complete what my manager tells me. It hasn't come back to bite me yet, but I'm not sure how much longer this model is sustainable especially if I want to move forward later. What can I do to not lose my edge? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:46 PM PDT I graduated uni in June and started working as a contractor software engineer at a tech company in April. My company usually employs people for a specific duration (eg. 6 months) as contractors before offering them a permenant position. Am I allowed to ask for two days off next month? I'd like to travel with some friends for a couple of days and I understand that they won't pay me for those days, but just wondering if I even can/should. Do I have to give a reason? How exactly does it all work when you're a contractor? I live in Vancouver if that is important in any way. [link] [comments] |
Getting and MBA with a low GPA? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:31 PM PDT I just started a good job in fintech but, after I get a PM position here (I'm just a new developer now), I'm really interested in getting a business degree so I can get even more into management. However, I tanked my GPA in my last semesters of undergrad and went from a 3.6 to a 3.3 (a mix of getting very sick and messing with my priorities like an idiot). What are my chances of getting into a good business grad program? Do I get recommendations from employers instead of college professors since I won't have seen or spoken to my professors for years? How much will GPA matter? I'm not sure what my realistic goals should be given my GPA. But I'd love to get on a track that makes this work. [link] [comments] |
Already accepted job offer but internship just gave me an offer Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:30 PM PDT Last week I accepted a job offer and I am supposed to begin next week but a few days ago the company I am interning at matched their salary, has better benefits, and has a culture I am more compatible with. I want to honor the contract I've signed but at the same time I want to return work at the company I interned at. Can I cancel my employment before my first day or is too late to accept the other offer? [link] [comments] |
About to start my first full time position. Posted: 27 Aug 2018 03:42 PM PDT What is the absolute best piece of advice you could give someone that is about to start their first full time programming job? For the sake of the sub, relate your answer to mindsets and tips applicable to development positions. [link] [comments] |
[Advice] Should I work full time while writing my Master thesis? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 03:12 PM PDT Hey /r/cscareerquestions, Obligatory, a bit of background. I am currently on my last year of Masters, during which I will have to write a Master thesis. I have no work experience besides research and open-source, therefore I had the idea to move to a different country in Europe, and try to kill two birds with one stone. I have studied in three different countries, during my Bachelor and Masters, as a part of exchange programs (Erasmus). I would really like to live in The Netherlands. This country has always fascinated me, and I have been lucky to visit it a handful of times. I am faced, however, with two dilemmas: a) If I work there now, I won't be able to get expat tax benefits once I finish my Masters (30% tax free wage during five years), as a Masters is pretty much necessary to apply for these benefits, and having work experience in the country will void any future applications; b) The full-time work week is usually 35-40 hours, and I am afraid not to be able to perform to my best ability on both the job and the thesis. I have received a couple of job offers in my country of origin, however the situation in regards to company culture and salary is decadent, and I would really like to avoid it like the plague. If you took the time to read through my wall of text, I would be really glad if you could drop your opinion regarding this, no matter what it is. I was really hyped up about moving there, but after finding that it could have big implications in my future, I need to digest this properly. [link] [comments] |
