    Well, apart of all other clever things, I have read about game marketing as well. So, the question - if I am months away from actually having a gameplay to show, should I already start to make some marketing moves about the game, that will be out after 14+ months? Or just wait?

    Where to get an online certificate or bachelor's degree on Game Art from a school?

    I've been trying to look for a school here in the Philippines that offers an online bachelor's degree in the field of arts (specifically game art, multimedia arts, or animation). It would be really nice if you guys can help me out :)

    I actually just got back to college this trimester after being stuck at home for about 2 years? but I don't really think my body can take it... that's why I'm searching for some online education instead.

    I want to study pixel art, low-poly art, vector, and realistic 3D art (if I can). A curriculum that balances both 2D and 3D art would be nice. I'd love to learn how to make good concept art as well.

    If you guys can recommend any online degrees or certificates it would really help me.

    EDIT: I'm specifically looking for certificates/a bachelor's degree from (international) schools since people with degrees are highly regarded in our country (especially if you come from a good school).

    I'm currently designing a Horror Game that's set in a Maze/ Labyrinth style environment. The map size is large and has two floors each of which contains a variety of rooms which have to be located in order to escape.

    Would you enjoy exploring a Maze/ Labyrinth style environment?

    or would it become too confusing and boring because of the endless hallways?

    Also, what level environment would you suggest?

    Advice for a beginner

    Hello.

    I'm pretty interested in making games. I've been researching everywhere, and can't find a decent solution to my problem.

    I've recently spent the last 2-ish months learning what is essentially 3D OpenGL, with the intention to (in the future) have better understanding of the graphics pipeline and start working on simple yet fun 2D games. I was inspired by many devs building their engines from scratch, but after some thought I feel like I'm wasting my time.

    I'm very interested in engines such as Unity or Unreal (for very simple games, of course) and have tried both to see their learning curve. I now feel like I should choose whether I focus my time learning the ins-and-outs of OpenGL or learning a game engine (which also takes quite a bit of time). Having the ability to understand game technology or having the ability to make them.

    Currently I have the impression that if I choose the wrong thing now, that my time will be wasted and it would be a lot harder to switch down the road of my so called 'career'. Like all the time I could have spent learning the engine was wasted and it would take seemingly the same amount of time to get up to par with other creators, and vice-verca.

    My little nephew had been wanting to get into game development. Myself and one of my cousins (who has actually worked in the industry for ~20 years) tried to tell him that this for-profit "college" he went to in Florida was going to be a scam. We tried to tell him that he wasn't going to learn anything he couldn't figure out on his own and that it was overly expensive and that the degree would be worthless. But his parents encouraged him to "follow his dream" and he listened to the marketing materials instead of either of us.

    Now he's literally over $100K in debt and he has no idea how to do anything except use Unreal and Unity in drag n drop mode. That's over $1000 per month in student loan payments (almost as much as my older brother pays for his LAW DEGREE from UCLA). He can't write a single line of code. He doesn't even know the difference between a language and an engine. He has no idea how to make a game on his own and basically zero skills that would make him useful to any team. The only thing he has to show for his FOUR YEARS is a handful of crappy Android apps that he doesn't even actually understand how he built.

    I'm sure most of you already know that these places are shit, but I just wanted to put it out there. Even though I told him so, I still feel terrible for him and I'm pretty sure that this whole experience has crushed his desire to work in the industry. These places really prey on kids like him that just love games and don't understand what they're getting into. And the worst of it all? I've actually learned more on my own FOR FREE in the past couple of weeks about building games than he did in 4 years, and that is not an exaggeration.

    These types of places should be fucking shut down, but since they likely won't be anytime soon, please listen to what I'm saying - STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THIS BULLSHIT FOR-PROFIT "COLLEGE" INDUSTRY. Save your goddamn money and time and do ANYTHING else. Watch Youtube videos and read books and poke your head into forums/social media to network with other like-minded people so you can help each other out. If an actual dumbass like me can learn this stuff then so can you, and you don't need to spend a single dime to do it.

    How hard it is to make a 2D fighting game?

    Compare to making other genre out in the market, how hard it is to make a 2D fighting game in comparison.

    And What is a good engine to start learning fundementals of fighting games before we do make the dream fighting game.

    That dream fighting game being a game that brings back the flashy, tight balance you get from classic capcom fighters like marvel vs capcom 2 and jojo's bizarre adventure.

    How to remove the FMOD debug window when playtesting my game?

    I am a really good programmer (in languages C/C++) and have a good knowledge of low-level graphics APIs like OpenGL but my artistic skills are likely... not exists.

    I want to develop a 2D game, but problem is i don't know how to create artistic materials (textures and also audio/game music) necessary, or how i can improve my skills on it. I tried to do few things on GIMP but they ended up as kind of visual pollution. How i can learn to use image manipulation programs and improve my skills?

However we're in need of money for art assets and justifying more investment in the game so we want to make a kickstarter.     What movies/ videos do you watch to inspire yourself or feel grateful about the fact that you are a game dev?

    That question is weirdly phrased so let me explain: I've got my first game coming out in a few months and things are going really well concerning it (gained a following, people are really excited, got selected for an award etc)

    I should be feeling grateful and pumped about it. Thing is, stuff happened in my personal life that's got me feeling down about myself and my life (heartbreak) That sad chapter is now over and I need to move on, and I think the best way to do that is to focus on my game. To realize how awesome it is to be in this position of success, and how lucky I am that I get to do this - my dream - for a living!

    Any movies or videos that I can watch during the next couple of days that can emphasize this point? Movies about success etc? Is Indie game: The Movie good for this - will it inspire me more and make me feel happy about the fact that I'm a gamedev (or is it scarier, about the indiepocalypse or something?) Could be about entrepreneurship too. Anything that realigns my perspective to make me value my work related life more. To appreciate the good thing I've got going on.

    A personal recommendation from me would be this video by Gary Vaynerchuk about overnight success.

    Questions about headless -nographics Unity instance.

    I read that you can run a Unity build without a graphics card using -batchmode -nographics.

    So does how does this work?

    Are components such as mesh renderer, particle effects, etc.. ignored?

    If so, is there a way to "build" a headless client, so it removes all the graphic components not needed? Kinda like how when you build a game unused assets (unless in res. folder) aren't included in build?

    I wonder because right now I am just removing them all by hand to reduce file size and decided it is probably not worth it considering these components wont take up that much space and AWS only charges around $0.10 per GB.

    Or do these components still produce a little bit of overhead while running headless, and should be removed anyways?

    If anybody knows please lemme know.

    I guess I'll just manually clean everything up. For anybody else wondering, this tells you that if you want it to be clean then you gotta put in work yourself (not sure if removing mesh renderer, etc.. has any impact yet, but I think you may aswell do it if you are gonna clean up other stuff at the same time). Also this has some good info on what should be done to clean it up and might be worth it if you have a lot of stuff.

    What are some of the reasons for frame rate drops or laggy framerate? And how can you prevent it from happening in your game? (Even if the game is playing on a really really good system) Or even if it's a game on a console (since it's should be optimized for it)

    Orcahq.com update loses key features. Where do you find gamedev jobs?

    My favorite gamedev job posting aggregator, Orcahq has lost some key features recently. Previously I was able to sort by most recent with filters that only showed jobs in my discipline/category and multiple locations, like US, or US and Canada.

    Now, all you can do is select a discipline/category and it will show you everything there, but no option to order by most recently posted. When you select a country, you can't also select any other countries or specific disciplines. Some countries have stopped appearing in the list of countries. There's several opportunities in China, but you can't just view everything in China anymore.

    I'm pretty frustrated because this was one of my most used sites.

    Does anyone use any other gamedev job listing aggregators that use these features, now that Orcahq has greatly reduced in scope?
