Best portfolio/web design when job hunting (software/computer engi).

Do you guys think layouts with the full image/full screen landing page like this our best :

    https://tomanistor.com/

or more functional, minimalist designs like this are preferred so the employers/potential people hiring you can quickly navigate without all the fluff or JS animations?:

    https://arthelon.github.io/

I noticed a great majority of front/back end dev. sites I've seen are the one gigantic scenic image landing page (see 1st layout above) lately. They usually have some pretty neat animations/fx but you have to scroll so far and all the content seems crammed onto one really long page...

so I'm not sure just because its trendy if it is more optimal, I just want a clean design that will showcase my projects, info about myself, and contact information. [with a dash of creativity here, nothing overkill].

Why do you prefer Lavarel (over CodeIgniter)?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 11:57 AM PDT

I'm considering switching our team from CodeIgniter to Lavarel. I've been very happy with CI over the years, but see that Lavarel seems to be the hot framework these days. Our team all knows and loves CI and no one has worked with Lavarel yet, so there would be a learning curve, plus we'd still have to maintain our existing sites in CI, so I'm not sure whether it's worth it.

For those that have come from a CodeIgniter background, why do you prefer Lavarel? What benefits did you notice after you switched?

Should I build stuff if I don't like it?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 09:38 AM PDT

I've been trying to come up with an idea for a web app, but I got nothing. Most of the things I want to build have already been done, so I don't see the point reinventing the wheel.

So in a situation like this, what should I do? I want to get better and learn new things, and the common advice is build something to get better. But what do you do when there's nothing youre passionate about building?

Remove .html extension from site on Github pages and Cloudflare

    Posted: 30 May 2018 03:16 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm still a beginner, but I made a photography portfolio website using Github pages and Cloudflare to host it. There are some links that take you to specific gallery html pages and I'm wondering how I can remove that .html extension from the url? I've tried searching google and reddit, but didn't really find anything that helpful. I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Should I take this job offer?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 04:20 AM PDT

I need your help deciding whether I should take this new job with better pay or stick to current one.

Current work place is pretty chilled. We do custom WordPress websites from scratch, that is not using any themes or page builders. And I sort of enjoy that. This place doesn't pay much.

The new job I have been offered looks like a WordPress mill where they use pre-made themes to cut down on costs for both business and clients. Basically I'll be just making minor changes here and there. But they've offered 15k more than what I'm being paid at current workplace.

Should I take this or keep working here and look for suitable jobs to come through.

Have any of you been scammed with job offers from legit looking companies?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 02:00 PM PDT

I think I just got scammed. Work from home, decent pay, except the company sent me a check and made me go buy certain things like iTunes gift cards for software programs. I'm wondering if anyone had this happened and what did you do?

Is BackEnd harder than Front End?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 01:39 PM PDT

Hey guys...currently in a bootcamp. About a month left...we been doing backend stuff with ruby..no rails yet... Just using sinatra and activerecords.

I feel very comfortable with front end stuff. But backend is giving me much more difficulties in terms of grasping the concepts and solving errors. Its a bit overwhelming. Is backend overall harder?

I see a lot of ppl use php, is it easier than ruby?

CAN Different pieces of html mobile/desktop influence SEO?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 01:27 PM PDT

Like only part of the site like a navigation has one html snippet for desktop and one for mobile, I'm considering doing that after I calculated all the transformations necessary from mobile to desktop, and it's a lot, the navigation I'm building is no joke

So could it influence SEO by any chance?

iOS Dev here, need a few questions answered on how to design/architect a web page to show information

    Posted: 30 May 2018 12:52 PM PDT

I have a bunch of JSON Data that I am storing in a MongoDB database.

I'd like to show the data on the webpage, so here is what I was thinking:

    1. Create the general UI for the Webpage
    2. Write a list of APIs to get information from the database to show on the webpage/to post information from the webpage to the database

    My question is:

What languages should I use for each of these steps?

Are there any tutorials that really helped you guys/that are famous for being well done in the webdev world?

    How should I architect this?
