    Hosting?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:11 PM PDT

I've been reading a few different topics and very rarely do I hear people talk about GoDaddy hosting. I have been using them for years and GoDaddy Pro is a huge help with my sites. Why don't more people use GoDaddy, is there something I'm missing? Are other hosts that much better?

What is my most logical path of learning?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:41 AM PDT

I have a background in CS(currently 3 years done a 4 year degree) and I have taught myself/taken udemy courses to learn HTML, CSS, and JS. Recently I have been learning more ES6 stuff and Sass and CSS frameworks but I feel like I need a path to follow as I just learn something different every day.

I took The Web Developer Bootcamp by Colt Steele on Udemy as well but I'm given to understand a lot of it is outdated, none the less I learned a lot.

I'm comfortable in solving most problems with HTML, CSS and JS so I'm wondering about some of your opinions. What is my my logical choice for what to put my effort into next? I've been thinking my next step should be React. Is that a good path these days?

I have seen the path for front-end learning on codeburst i am just looking for more opinions!

Want to transition from PUG to react

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:22 AM PDT

I'm currently using out template for a personal project. I think put is pretty powerful because I can embed javascript in it and it will render the objects passed to it and logic within it.

With that said, we all know companies are looking towards to the vue, angular, react front end framework. I have some experience with react native and I want to transition my project to react. Can anyone share some advice or insight? I'm trying to grasp the understanding of react's similarity compared to the pig template engine. Is it right to say that a component is like an include file but can passed in props/arguments/parameters?

For example, in my project I have a vote system and it uses the same layout on every page. I was thinking, why can't I just have this vote script (the divs and the form) in a file and just pass in arguments like the post id instead of copying the same codes for every part of the project where I can vote for the post.

Is this what components can accomplish?

Is it okay to showcase the website of the company you work for as part of your personal portfolio?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:37 AM PDT

Maybe a silly question, but I'll risk the ridicule! I imagine it may depend on the company, but generally speaking, what does everyone here think about this? Would you imagine I need permission from my manager? I have various, small-scale, personal projects to include in my online portfolio website, but I would also love to show off the polished, heavy-duty web app that I work on. Thanks in advance!

IDX RETS for Real Estate Websites?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:38 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm building a new website for a client of mine (a realtor) that should integrate the RETS / IDX data and allow the realtor's clients easy access to the MLS tools. I've taken a look round and found a LOT of plugins and vendors that provides simple integration tools. I've also found some open source (in this case for Drupal - Drealty) and others that require some more work.

Has anyone had some experience with any of these tools/plugins etc and is willing to share some recommendations? There are some comparisons between some of the WordPress plugins for example, but they are at best superficial. So, I appreciate any suggestions, advice, or pointers you might have for me.

    Thanks in advance!

having a hard time trying to convince people from my work to switch from Wordpress to Netlify CMS

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:26 PM PDT

so I work as a front end intern in a bank that has 4 static sites that are blogs.

while studying about the JAMstack (static gen, headless cms), i got really excited to use it as a replacament for old Wordpress that they have, and between sprints I was trying to recreate one of their sites. so yesterday I managed to finish one of the sites, and I showed it to my team and they really liked it everything about it. the problem was with the DBAs and infrastructure guys. they think that Netlify/Github Pages don't any proof of security and availability, and that the bank may have its reputation compromised if the Netlify/Github Pages are with their services down. and because they think like that, they are not gonna give me the custom domain of the bank, and all my work was for nothing. this response really frustrated me bcuz it's sucks to be stuck with old Wordpress themes full of shitty plugins and totally not optimized that reaches 3MB, while I have a webpacked project that scores A on various performances sites and doesn't have even 1MB of size. companies with this kinda of "senior" employees makes me wanna quit and look for another place that embraces new features and don't get stuck in the past just bcuz "if is not broken, don't touch it".

what do you guys think about it?

    Junior Developer looking for advice

    Posted: 30 May 2018 11:55 PM PDT

    Hi r/webdev,

I have been lurking in this sub for the last year shortly after I started a boot camp (I know there are mixed feelings about boot camps but I hadn't seen this until after I started). For the past year I have been learning web dev while still working my full time job. I have completed the boot camp and have some sites as part of my portfolio and I am now actively seeking a junior role and would really appreciate some advice from you guys.

I have seen similar posts to the one I am writing which have been helpful but would love some feedback on my sites and CV and what are the best next steps I should take from here on. The boot camp I completed awards a Diploma that is issued by Edinburgh Napier University but I am yet to receive my grade. Below are the links to my CV, projects and code; any feedback you have would be a big help to me.

While applying to jobs I am currently looking to create my own website which will act as another part of my portfolio in addition to being sort of a digital CV however I'm not sure what best route to take with this. The route I am most confident with would be to use Python/Django again but a lot of the jobs in my area are looking for PHP with others looking for Node.js.

Would I be best to stick to what I know? Or branch out and look to expand my knowledge to other back-end languages?

All feedback and advice will be greatly appreciated.
