    Who disables JavaScript?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:11 AM PDT

So during development, a lot of people say that precautions should be made in case a user has disabled JavaScript so that they can still use base functionality of the website.

But honestly, who actually disables JS? I've never in my life disabled it except for testing non-JS users, none of my friends or family even know what JS is.

Are there legitimate cases where people disable JavaScript?

    designer got mad?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:42 AM PDT

if another design tweaks your design last minute because the boss asks you, would you take offense? I am the boss-woman and made some tweaks to one of my designers html and css. My designer got really offensive and sent me an email about it. Is this normal behavior? I had to make this design change because of demand from a higher-up at the last minute.

Struggling to remember this amazing website I forgot to Bookmark.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:16 AM PDT

There's this very neat website, having a black & white coder's zone design with a mix of bright colours that has an exhaustive list of Web design everything split into categories (frameworks, plugins, libraries).

It has mostly a front-end dev focus. I used to go there while building a site to lookup cool new plugins or libraries to add to my project.

What stood out for me was how neatly designed the interface was!

It will be so nice if it rings a bell for someone, I hope the above description is helpful :/

EDIT: It was www.unheap.com! Thanks for the help everyone :)

We can keep this thread going with everyone commenting their favourite sites along the same lines as the ones already mentioned here.

I really like how coding communities are coming together for productive conversations these days. My contribution:

Is it bad practice to have a person do the design and front-end dev and then give the code to a back-end dev to complete that portion of the project?

    New Developer Position Advice

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:32 PM PDT

Hello all, I've been working at one of the biggest college universities in the Midwest for about 5 months now. As for my position, I build HTML5 digital banner ads, responsive HTML5, CSS, and Javascript email campaigns, and work with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop for creative design templates. I come from a web design and development background, and have an Associate's degree in web dev. I also have a total of about 3.5 years experience with code. Everyone at my work is great - very intelligent, hard-working, easily to get along with, and have good senses of humor.

I just got out of a meeting with my boss and a fellow who has the same job as me, and we've been told that they're eradicating our position and renaming it to "Front End Developer". Which, by all means, is exactly what I've always wanted. The catch: there's no pay raise and I make 47k a year.

Thoughts? (Advice on how to talk to my boss, etc.?) Thanks!

Issues finding employment as web developer

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:08 AM PDT

Hey there. So I have the goal of attaining a web developer job in California and am in the process of relocating to the Bay Area. I'll be moving there for sure, as long as I can find employment before my move. I'd like to go there because I'd absolutely love a career in web development, and because it's really the place to be for networking opportunities if you're in the tech industry. My girlfriend also wants to attend UC Berkeley for grad school, and she graduates with me in about a week.

I've been applying to web developer positions for about a month and a half now, and after about 50 applications to mostly entry level positions out there on indeed.com, I've received one call from a recruiting firm. From the rest I received either no reply or a message informing me that they will be pursuing other candidates. I personally perceive that I'm an absolute shoe in for some of these positions, as some are only asking for bare minimum front-end development skills. My degree is a B. Sc. in Agribusiness. However, I have 1 year of full-stack experience building websites and web applications from scratch, mostly on a freelance basis or in the context of personal/school-assigned projects. I've heard stories of people getting developer jobs with far less than what I've got as far as experience and knowledge go. I also absolutely LOVE programming.

I actually asked a number of the companies that explicitly rejected me what it is that I'm missing (in a nice way) as I'm genuinely confused as to what it is at this point. The only one that replied to that question informed me that I was not selected because I'm just about to graduate, and they were looking for someone with 1+ years of experience in web development post college. This was not explicitly stated in the job posting, but I did actually continue to speak with this individual and received some brilliant advice as far as redoing my resume goes. I've been sending the revamped resume with my applications for the last few days. I decided to post here for additional advice, maybe some of you were once in a similar place.

TL;DR: Can't get web dev interviews and need advice

Here's my GitHub: https://github.com/brlee432 (I direct the employer to my PlantPi repository first, as it's my most recent project) And my other portfolio site: http://bcleewebdev.com/portfolio/

I would deeply appreciate any wisdom you all have to offer me. Thanks!

Edit: I currently reside in Clemson, SC.

If my goal is to be a web developer, not designer, should I only know the basics of HTML and CSS then move on to JS and so forth?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:42 PM PDT

Or should I do what I've been doing and become really skilled with HTML and CSS and then move on to Javascript?

Why would a site restrict some sort of special characters for their password requirements?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:18 PM PDT

My company has recently transferred me onto a HIPAA-compliant project for a private client, and I though this would be a good excuse to brush up on some best practices for sites that need to be high security.

I like to randomly generate my passwords and put them into a password manager/password-protected Excel file which I store on a thumb drive. As a result a lot of my passwords are 16-digits and full of random characters. But to my surprise, a lot of sites won't accept them, mainly because they restrict the types of special characters permitted.

What's the reason for this? Why would a company want to make passwords less secure by limiting the number of characters available?

    Semantic UI Vertically Center Grid/Container/Whatever!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:16 PM PDT

So I'm starting to lose hair over this. Basically I've created a login 'island' and I'd like to have it horizontally and vertically centered. I was able to horizontally center it by creating a column and using the centered class but for the life of me I'm not able to vertically center the 'island' using Semantic UI. Please help me before my girlfriend dumps me for going bald...

    <% include ../partials/login_header %> <div class="ui container"> // I have this height set to 100%. <div class="ui grid"> // How do I vertically align this? <div class="ui dark transparent eight wide centered rounded column"> <div class="ui grid"> <div class="ui column"> <img class="ui medium centered image" src="/img/full_logo.png"> <form class="ui medium fifteen pixel top margined form" action="/login" method="POST"> <div class="two fields"> <div class="field"> <label>Employee ID:</label> <input type="text" name="username" placeholder="8375"> </div> <div class="field"> <label>Password:</label> <input type="password" name="password" placeholder="••••••••••"> </div> </div> <p id="loginError"><%= message %></p> <div class="ui two buttons"> <button class="ui red disabled button" type="button">Forgot Password</button> <div class="or"></div> <button class="ui orange button" type="submit">Submit</button> </div> <div class="ui right aligned fifteen pixel top margined container"> <a href="#">Don't have an account? Request one!</a> </div> <div class="ui error message"></div> </form> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <% include ../partials/footer %>
