Why is AWS so outrageously expensive? Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:12 AM PDT I make web games, like this one. My games aren't super popular, maybe 10k DV between all my games. Before, when i hosted on AWS, I was paying upwards of $500/month on AWS, with 2 or 3 small instances behind cloudflare (which carried half of the load). Most of the fees weren't EC2, but "data transfer fees." Even behind cloudflare, I could barely make a profit with the cost of AWS. Note that I only used AWS for the webservers, to serve the files (maybe a 10MB payload for each uncached page load). I didn't even use it for game servers, where most of the bandwidth was being used (with websockets data for multiplayer networking). I've since switched to a smaller, cheaper cloud provider which I won't name so this post doesn't sound like an advertisement. I'm paying maybe 6X less on hosting, and I feel like I'm also getting more CPU/RAM bang for my buck. Anyway, my question is, why is AWS so damn expensive? It's a great service and I used to recommend it to everyone. But 5-6X market rate is just not worth it for the extra features (like elastic ip addresses and AMIs). How does AWS get away with charging so much? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 05:56 AM PDT I am having trouble finding node tutorials or courses with mysql or postgresql. Seems like everything I find is node/mongo. Have you guys found a good course or material that covers node with a SQL db? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Apr 2018 02:35 PM PDT I am a few months into studying web dev, and I'm reaching the point where I need to decide if this is a career I want to pursue. I love the actual work, and am capable. I just don't want to go back to a job working 50 hours weeks, and weekends. I want to work m-f, 8 hours a day. I know every company is different, but personally do you find yourself needing to work a lot of overtime, or are you leaving on time most days? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Apr 2018 10:45 AM PDT Hey, I am pretty new to Wordpress and the SEO part of webdevelopment, but i want to learn. So I have tried to get my site faster by making the images (thumbnails) smaller, and bundled the CSS and JS. The "load-out-page" went from 9,6mb to 6,1. And i have reduced the site load time by roughly 1sec - wich i feel is a great start. But, it is still very slow. I have used the "most popular" wordpress-theme: Avada, do that should not be the problem. I have Jetpack installed for image optimalization. I have used: https://tools.pingdom.com/#!/wM4uT/bansunen.no For my speedtest (it caches, so if i run my site a second time, i like the result..) The site i am trying to improve is this: www.basunen.no If any of You got some pointers, i would love it. Kinda stuck with what i got at the moment. Maybe i should rebuild the whole thing? Is it okay for the UI to assume a user is logged in if they have a cookie? Posted: 03 Apr 2018 02:00 PM PDT If I have a static VueJS frontend talking to a Laravel backend, where the backend is responsible for issuing authorized session cookies, can I optimistically assume the user is logged in? It makes it easier to know what to render initially, if I check for that cookie on the domain, but are there any gotchas? Let's say I make a request on page load to get the user info based on the cookie and if it's invalid, just squash it and have the UI assumed they are not logged in at that point. What browsers should modern platforms support? Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:52 PM PDT I am building a brand new platform for a client with a fairly large budget but a timeline constraint. This platform is a little flashy and has requirements that will really make use of flexbox (or other grid system?), css3 transitions, svgs, etc, a must. For full disclosure, I plan to build in angular 5+ cli. What browsers do you think support the needs of a fairly modern web platform without having to build separate components or degrade the UX in order to support old systems? I want to be able to use flexbox but I also don't want my client to bawk when I tell them the platform won't run on ie 9 or 10. Does anybody have recommendations for where to draw a good line? I feel like a modern grid layout is a must-have. I also might not be fully up to speed on the state of good/standard polyfills. Thanks in advance for the advice. [link] [comments]
Anyone familiar with a CMS called First Spirit? Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:50 AM PDT I'm moving to the digital marketing team within our company. My role will include web page creation and editing. I'm unfamiliar with the backend CMS which is called FirstSpirit. A few reviews I found said that it's excellent. I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with it. [link] [comments]
Employers looking more now for master-of-all-trades? Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:23 PM PDT I'm a little baffled seeing new job postings asking for back-end developer/database people but also to do front-end UI/UX design work... to me engineering and design are two different mindsets, like shaving your face and getting your hair styled. Are these job requirements unrealistic or are we supposed to be engineering stylists now? [link] [comments]
Did you guys get a degree in web development? Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:14 PM PDT Long story short, my associates degree is useless for transferring and I'm not paying 100k in tuition or loans for an IT bachelors degree. So I'm looking at web development. My state university offers a bachelors in web development and that would only cost me 40k since I'd actually be able to transfer into it. Do I need that though? I don't even know what id want in web development. All I know is I really enjoyed my html/css class and making a website. I'm Considering the degree because I'm an awful self learner but in a class environment I'm paying for and get graded on, I'd actually learn something. Would a bachelors do anything for me though or am I just as likely to get a web dev job just by taking udemy web dev boot camp courses for <$1000? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:26 PM PDT The company I work for is looking to develop a website that displays product pages for around 500 products, each with various sizes (example: PartNumber-100ml, PartNumber-200ml, PartNumber-300ml). We will not be selling products through the website, so ecommerce functionality is not required (although, perhaps one day it will be?). Ideally, we would be able to pull the product descriptions from an already existing database so that when they are updated, the website is updated as well. I am curious to see what other people would suggest for scenarios like this? Perhaps Magento? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Trying to link to Themeify Slider Pro Slides Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:21 PM PDT I'm building a Wordpress site and they wanted to use a Themify theme. I'm using Themify Slider Pro in the first two vertical panes. On the second pane I want to create links to specific slides in the slider. I can't figure out what jquery event I need to bind to the link. I attempted to go into the event viewer and see what I need to do, but my knowledge of how to do this is limited. http://mundanoburo.com/index.php/mudano-2/ 2nd pane down, "Proyectos". Tried it with "D1" in the vertical list to connect to the 2nd slide. But it's not doing anything. [link] [comments]
I'm struggling with being unproductive at my first job Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:14 PM PDT So I'm struggling with being unproductive at work and I'm constantly feeling guilty for it. Sometimes it's being stuck on a bug, sometimes just feeling uninterested in my work, sometimes being too tired, and other times I just cant focus and be motivated. At times I think it's good that I feel this way because it motivates me to be more productive the next day and I try to make it up with extra hours but other times it just makes me more unproductive from the overwhelming guilt. This is my first time in the workforce. Is it normal to not be productive all the time in the workforce and how much unproductivity is normal? [link] [comments]
A second stack or just front-end framework after having learned Django/SQLite? Posted: 03 Apr 2018 11:52 AM PDT I'm trying to expand my skill-set. I've made a pretty elaborate (for me anyway) intranet/database/whatever system for work using Django (web-dev isn't my job, but I wanted to improve things at work so I learned and did it), with the stock SQLite and just a bunch of Javascript on the templates. Also an army building site for miniatures games with the same tools that's decently popular. I figure it's time I learned A. A front-end framework, and B. a back end that jives well with it, and I suppose another database wouldn't hurt. I really want to make database calls/posts without full page reloads, and I assume that's what this would open up for me. I'm sure things like this get asked a lot, but I couldn't really find a decent answer. What do you suggest, mostly for the purpose of becoming more hire-able if I'm to switch careers, but also just in terms of usefulness and future relevance. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
