Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:54 PM PDT Tonight I was checking my email and saw an email from Namecheap saying that they had renewed a bunch of domain names that I didn't want to renew anymore. I thought it was ridiculous because in the billing settings of my Namecheap account I had set "auto-renew" to "off". So I contacted their customer support and they basically told me that any auto-renewals cannot be refunded. This despite the fact that I had set my auto-renew off. So basically I was being charged for something I didn't want, and explicitly said so through my settings. This isn't the first time Namecheap auto-renewal has screwed around, either - I removed my credit card for the longest time because I kept noticing that domains would magically reset back to 'auto-renew' even when I had manually set them to not do so. Not having my card details in there was the only way I could ensure that I wouldn't get charged something I didn't want. That was a long time ago and I thought they had fixed it by now so I recently put my credit card details back in - lo and behold I happened to have a bunch of expiring domains that all got auto-renewed in one big transaction. I used to recommend namecheap to people but will definitely be looking around for a new registrar after this... [xpost r/namecheap] [link] [comments]

What are your best 'advanced' CSS resources? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 06:42 AM PDT I spent most of my time with Javascript / "backend", but now at work I am being tasked to create UI / UX. When I first learned development I was okay at CSS, but man, am I slacking hard. Do you guys know of any good resources for CSS to learn? I'm not talking code academy, I know pretty much know how css works, but I just struggle...putting it together. I'm talking more like... advanced topics on CSS. I know there is a website out there that talks about the [link] [comments]

[Question] Angular vs React vs Vue? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:39 AM PDT I just completed Colt Steele's web developer boot camp course from Udemy. The course didn't talk about any of these frameworks and after some research about frontend frameworks, these 3 were the most talked about in the community. I'm still looking for a clear answer of which framework to pick up. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you all in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:09 PM PDT I have been doing the solo (LLC) full-stack web development thing for about 6 years now, and I've recently decided to start offering a simple "Website Audit" service to my existing clients as a way to give them ideas on keeping their site(s) up-to-date, help them avoid potential legal issues, and to hopefully bring in a little bit of extra money to my business. I want the audits to cover:
So far I have been using the following tools to create these custom reports: None of these tools address security very well, but I'm not sure I want to try to do some sort of expensive 3rd-party penetration testing. Are there any other (hopefully) free tools I could be using to provide the best service and information possible, or are there any I am using that have better alternatives? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 10:50 AM PDT Link: https://github.com/Feuerfuchs/sass-ignis Ignis is a framework that I developed in parallel to my website. I originally didn't plan to make it public because I just wanted to have a solid foundation for my future web-related projects. But recently, the framework has grown a lot and it now offers useful and unique features that I think will be helpful for other people. These features are: 1. BEM system The BEM system has always been the main feature of Ignis, so it's very mature. Apart from generating valid BEM and BEMIT selectors (even when combined with non-BEM selectors), the provided mixins also check if their usage is correct and you can implement your own rules using the validator feature. 2. Easing background gradients Easing background gradients were inspired by a website that was posted on r/web_design a few weeks ago. While the author developed a nice PostCSS plugin to generate easing background gradients, its lack of features was a deal breaker for me: I was limited to two color stops, and I couldn't even set a position for them. 3. Context stacks A context stack is a data structure that works like, well, a stack. It can act as a call stack when used in combination with mixins. 4. Property trees A property tree is actually just a nested map structure. They are very useful to manage structured data, such as the colors for a color scheme. 5. Fluid properties Fluid properties are based on fluid typography. But rather than just supporting the font-size property, Ignis' fluid properties allow you to scale any numeric property depending on the viewport width. I use this to reduce some vertical paddings when the viewport gets quite narrow. 6. Modular scales Supported are single- and multi-stranded modular scales. Moreover, you can use different modular scales depending on the viewport, and the used value will fluidly scale between those. All features are explained in more detail in the GitHub repository. In the next few weeks, I will work on a website for Ignis that uses all of these features and that's open source. In the meantime, you can see it in action on my work-in-progress website. What do you do when a business owner wants you to work with an SEO expert? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:53 PM PDT I've been doing some freelance work for a client and his clients. He owns a digital marketing firm. Unfortunately, there has been a drop in google rankings. He thinks it might be due to some technical changes that happened a few months ago. I'm of the opinion that is a combination of lack of content updates, competitors catching up, and maybe over using specific words too much. Unfortunately, he's got an SEO buddy that agreed with his original thoughts. Some of the of the changes the SEO buddy suggested were to not have items fade in and out. I pointed out that the site did that before I made his tweaks. On a side note, another consultant suggested the changes. I've basically been hacking away at a theme using JS/CSS to make a theme work better. Unfortunately, I've probably pushed the theme as far as I can go. He would be better off getting another theme that was better over all. Unfortunately, we did start a migration to a new theme. But the business owner never puts time on it and just wants to revise the current site. The SEO consultant suggested that in the robots.txt file, I should remove "Disallow: /wp-admin/". Thankfully the business owner listened to me and realized that should stay in the file. Based on that I feel like the SEO consultant is probably just a bullshit artist. More than likely, I'm just going to drop the client it is freelance work that isn't bringing in a lot of money for me. I've got an FT job and the loss of work wouldn't hurt. I just wanted to get some thoughts/second opinions. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:47 PM PDT Hey. I need some help. I want to create a free blog. I wanted to use wordpress as I have used it before but then I learned that you cannot add adsense to a free WP site. Then I read that this is available at blogger. Upon reading further, it seems like hosting is free even with a custom domain (of course, the domain itself is paid). Is this true? Can I really use a custom domain with free hosting on blogger? Why doesn't everyone use it then? If not, can I at least use adsense with a free blogger domain? How exactly does it work? Thanks, I've never used blogger before. [link] [comments]

I'm looking for feedback / suggestions on anything, but specifically:

Increasing body width based on new content Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:42 PM PDT I have a few row and columns stacked next to each other. I want to display them horizontally and appear when scrolled down (Page scrolls to the left instead) So basically reverse the scroll of the page from top/bottom to left/right Like this https://i.redd.it/9yzyypvvnpu01.png All I want is for the content to overflow to the right and slide onto the screen on scroll. How can I do this? [link] [comments]
OAuth vs custom, "in house" account system in node.js web applications Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:14 PM PDT Hi! I've been using Google OAuth for node.js apps because it is pretty easy to set up in my opinion, and it seems more secure than writing a custom account system for my applications, at least at my current knowledge level regarding security. What are some pros and cons of using OAuth vs a custom account system, especially in the node.js ecosystem? [link] [comments]
Learn html, css and JS separately or together Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:28 AM PDT I want to start making websites, and I know the basics of html, and a little bit of css, but I don't know how to actually make a good looking website. I'm not sure if I should be searching for a tutorial that shows how to make a website from start to finish, or I should be going through individual tutorials for each one. Could I get some opinions or help on this? [link] [comments]

[Showoff Saturday] Making a career change to web dev, looking for feedback on my portfolio Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:31 AM PDT Hello people of webdev, I am making a career change to full stack web development and hoping to find a junior position in the next few weeks. I have been working on my development skills on the side since 2014 and I think I am finally ready to make the jump. I have created my portfolio, davethedev.me, with a few projects and looking for as much feedback as possible, good and bad. I would also appreciate any feedback on my resume. Be honest, be brutal. Feel free to leave any tips for my job search. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:10 AM PDT I've had a lot of people contact me about the Trilogy bootcamp. Figured I would make a post here rather than keep sending dm's. Is it worth the 9k?Yes. I went from not knowing what a for loop was, to being able to create and deploy a full blown React application. Can't you just learn it all on your own?No shit. Lots of people are self taught, you can go that route if you want. But being in a bootcamp allows you to ask question, meet people and go to various sponsored events. But the biggest advantage was being forced to learn at such a rapid rate. You either sink or swim. Also the connections. There were a few events the bootcamp did, and I know for a fact some people got job offers directly from them. I also made some great friends. The admission is to easy?Agreed. I thought the same at first, it is very easy. Don't let this deceive you, the course is very hard. What does the average lesson look like?Warm up, lesson/lecture, coding activities that all build on top of of each other. For example for js, we did some warm up js exercises, After that we talked about js, watched the instructor code, then did some more activities. Some times we would end on a big activity. Part-time?I couldn't afford to just up and quit my job. I did the part time because I had to. If I could I would have gone full time. I worked full time and went to college. Working and going to the bootcamp was far more difficult. My social life completely disappeared. Be ready to put in work. What didn't you like about it?The homework. I was doing so much additional learning, that the homework just got in the way. Quality of the instructor's/ta's?Top notch. Never had a bad interaction with the instructors or ta's. They were all willing to help. Im pretty sure if the roles were reversed I would have strangled myself for asking how to fix git over 20 times lol. [link] [comments]
