Has anyone suddenly had a domain name taken shortly after looking it up?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 06:35 AM PDT

So back in October of 2017 I decided to look up a domain for a personal website I wanted to make, I decided to not get it at the time as I know I wasn't going to be doing the website just yet.

Now, fast-forward to April 2018 and I go to check for the domain only to find it's been taken. A quick whois search and I find that, oddly enough, it was taken shortly after I looked it up. I can see that it's been taken by a company called "Identity Protect Limited" in which the current director just so happens to be a solicitor at 123-reg, conveniently the website in which I looked for this domain.

So I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this insane 'coincidence' and if there's anything you can really do about it except buying the domain at a marked up price?

How can I work in web design AND web development

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 10:12 AM PDT

I love to code. I love the problem solving and then feeling when you finally get something to work. But I am also very artistic and need to be creative in my job. I am a 21 y/o female and I have one year left of college before I'm out in the real world. I currently have an internship at a digital media agency as a front end web developer and while I do really like it, I would love to somehow work as a web designer AND a front end developer. Please please someone tell me how I can make this happen or if this is even a thing.

Basically I just want to be able to think of the ideas and then code them myself, but I'm realizing those are only done by separate people

jQuery, CSS Sliding up doesn't trigger the function after CSS elements are changed.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 03:37 PM PDT

I'm trying to create a NavBar that slides down on scroll (hidden at start) after reaching a certain DIV I want to increase the size of some elements (Logo & Text)

I've snooped on the internet and found some good snippets on StackOverflow

    Here's the Jquery code

    $(window).scroll(function(e){ if ($(this).scrollTop() > 10) { // Scroll down condition $('#NavBarProperties:hidden').slideDown(); //Show Command var div = $("#NavBarProperties"); // when this div is reached animate the changes of the following elements //Start of Text, Image and padding change with animation div.animate({fontSize: '30px'}, "slow"); // var padLeft = $(this).css('padding-left'); // get the padding $(this).css('padding-left', padLeft + '10px'); // increase Padding var padright = $(this).css('padding-right'); // get the padding $(this).css('padding-right', padright + '10px'); // increase Padding $("#logoImg").animate({ //increase image size height: '90px', width: '90px' }); //End of element change } else { $('#NavBarProperties:visible').slideUp(); //Scroll the navBar back up } });

Now when I scroll down the navBar shows up and the elements transform but when I scroll back up the code won't execute for hiding the navBar again.

This only happens when the Element change snippet is put in the IF statement. The bare codes work flawlessly on their own.

Sorry for the bad english, It's my semi-third language.

srcset / sizes Not Working on iPhone iOS/Safari 11

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 11:46 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm using the <picture> element in conjunction with srcset and scaling vw sizes for responsive images within my site. I'm doing a final bug test using BrowserStack, and have noticed that when iPhones using iOS/Safari 11 are rotated to landscape mode, the images in question maintain their vw size from portrait mode, while everything else adjusts to the landscape viewport (i.e. text that resizes using vw in CSS).

I found some tips on StackOverflow regarding changes to make to the <meta> viewport tag, but I've tried all kinds of stuff for that to no avail.

Has anyone here had this issue, or have any pointers?

Thank you so much in advance.

What is it like making a living as a freelance web dev?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 03:28 PM PDT

Hi Reddit! I'm 20 y/o and torn between going to trade school and becoming a freelance web developer. Last year before I started my current job in logging, I taught myself HTML, CSS, and some basic javascript. Obviously my skills are a bit rusty and I have a ton to learn before I can start freelancing, but I'm curious how much you guys make and how many hours you work. University isn't really an option due to money, so I would be 100% self-taught. Also, what is it like trying to find a job as a self-taught web dev? I live in BC, Canada if that helps.

What is the proper way to make announcements on your site?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 02:54 PM PDT

For example, say I want to announce a beta feature for my site. I'll have a box near the top with a message and an 'X' so users can close the box out. This announcement should not appear again next time they visit.

What is the best way to accomplish this? The way I currently do this is by storing a cookie associated with the message when the user clicks the 'X'. When the page is loaded, it will check for the cookie. If the cookie exists, then don't show the message.

I'm not sure if there is a better way to do this. I'd appreciate your opinions on this, and any other advice on this topic that may improve user experience. Thanks!

Best way to allow users to create content used throughout the site

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 02:41 PM PDT

Let's say for example I make a website where people talk about Ice cream. I make a page where they can select a flavor from a drop down, and write a comment about it.

Now let's say I've never heard of the ice cream flavor "Reddit Road" but many other people think it is popular and they are outraged I don't have it in the drop down.

What is the best way I can allow users to add to the drop down list without taking advantage/making up flavors that don't exist?

Edit: without me having to approve/deny requests to add to the flavor list

What does most of the web developers time consist of?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 02:24 PM PDT

I'm really curious about web development. I'm mostly into Python and data analysis given that I am an information system student but having the aptitude for programming means that web developing is an option to me.

But there are some things I just don't understand yet about it. When you are a web developer doing front end or ux, whatever all of these Buzz words mean, what does most of your time consist of? Are you updating web pages, creating brand new ones, what does it consist of?

Also may be a silly question but when you create a brand new web page for a client, do you literally write out the entire thing or are there tools that are used to write a majority of the webpage and then you fill in all of the finite details that you're looking for? I have long wondered how web developers can make thousands upon thousands of web pages and it's just a single developer doing it. How was it possible? I look at the source code in one single web page and it's insane. How can they possibly have time to write thousands of web pages?

    This keyword in Javascript

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 01:29 PM PDT

    Hi!

I am working on a project and found some code online that is similar to what I want to do. However, is uses the "this" javascript keyword, and I want to write code without using "this".

How would you go about converting a function that uses "this" to a javascript function that does not use "this"

    Thank you in advanced!

Am I missing something, or is this tutorial out of date? I'd love to get started learning this. Thanks
