Experienced Devs, do you actually grind leetcode questions when job-hunting? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:12 PM PDT People on this sub sell leetcode as the bonafide way to get better positions lot but I'm wondering if that's a symptom of being filled with entry level engineers or a product of the whole industry now [link] [comments] |
What kind of version control do you guys use in the industry? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 12:36 PM PDT How familiar should you be with it when you're an entry level developer? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:10 PM PDT This is in the Bay Area. I started on a project that is very fast moving and is on a tight deadline. Everyone on the team has 10+ years experience, except for one guy who has 3. I don't really have a go-to mentor and I'm given assignments with little to no context or guidance. I'm trying incredibly hard to be valuable to my team and have been putting in long hours. I'm so grateful for the opportunity as it pays well and I find the work interesting, but I just don't think my team is putting in any effort to get me up to speed. I've set up 1:1s with others to go over things but they fly through explanations and seem impatient if I don't understand something. I can't say I blame them because I know they have a shit ton of work to do. 3 weeks ago my boss said I was doing amazing, but then suddenly the other day he said I was falling short of expectations. I'm honestly putting in my best effort and that's the part that scares me most. I don't know how I'm going to magically improve in his eyes. He previously worked in QA and is pretty disconnected from the development process. He just looks at the amount of work people are getting done. Other members of the team have also complained that he doesn't realize how long some of these tasks take. I've had several internships in the past and received return offers from all of them, so I know I'm not useless. I can't imagine anything worse than losing this job and having to go back to grinding Leetcode all day and mindlessly applying online. I don't know what to do in this situation. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 08:05 AM PDT I want to work remote or just freelance. I've also thought about learning swift. I have a pretty decent OOP understanding and have programmed using a static language before. I'm doing a non STEM phd and will finish in two more years. By the time I fimish I'd like to earn at least $2,000 USD a month coding from home. What do I need to do to make it happen? [link] [comments] |

How to quit job in first week? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 09:53 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm starting a job soon but I've heard news that an offer is coming from a place I'd much rather work for way more than the first place. I want to wait until I have the written offer since I know verbal ones can sometimes fall through -- this means I'll pretty much have to end my short employment next week with high probability. What is the general process for doing this? I know they are pretty much gonna hate me no matter what -- I just want to know how to do this as professionally as possible. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How hard is it to pick up C++ as a Java developer? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:21 AM PDT I've been primarily writing in Java for 4 years, with some experience in Golang and python. I'm looking at an opportunity where C++ is the primary language, feeling a little scared that I won't be able to pick up on it quick enough. I also feel like I won't "feel" the same amount of productivity I felt with Java. Wondering what you guys think. [link] [comments] |
How popular are european graduates among US companies? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:21 AM PDT As I'm from Germany and would love to make some experiences in the US some day, I'd like to know how european students or graduates are seen by US companies? I know for example that indian students seem to be very popular. We europeans (as far as my opinion goes) have a pretty good education, especially in central Europe and Scandinavia. Would you say that a graduate from there is initially seen as an attractive candidate or is it maybe even the opposite for some reason? What's your take on it? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
I was interviewed for the wrong position. Best course of action? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 09:12 AM PDT I applied to a software engineering internship spot and was instead interviewed for a data science role. Needless to say, I didn't have the requisite skills and the interview didn't go great. I'm guessing the recruiter who contacted me (who I did speak with on the phone and discuss my resume with) messed up. Is there anything I can do in this position? Should I email the recruiter and ask for another interview? I'm not too optimistic about a positive response as the recruiter would have to admit she messed up. What's the best course of action at this point? Edit: Yes, I did bring it up with the interviewer. He was surprised, like me, but I said I'd like to go ahead with the interview anyway. If I said no, I probably wouldn't have gotten another interview, so I figured I should give the interview and then decide on how to proceed. Should I reach out to the recruiter? My biggest fear is that I won't get another interview for the position that I applied to and then may not further consider me for the interview that I gave. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:09 PM PDT I'm very excited for my internship this summer, and I'm hoping to end the summer with a full time offer for after I graduate (Spring 2019). Does anyone have information on how common receiving an offer after an internship is (without additional interviewing), and what I can do along the way to prove myself worthy of full time? For context, this isn't a SWE internship but I'll be coding & doing CS curriculum design. [link] [comments] |
Getting ramped up on OCaml at Jane Street Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:53 PM PDT Anyone know what the process is like for learning OCaml for new engineers at Jane Street? Is it recommended to study it before starting? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:06 PM PDT When do applications for these typically start/where do you find what companies offer these types of internships? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is embedded systems a good fit for me? Mech-Eng trying to become SWE. Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:30 PM PDT Hey r/cscareerquestions. I have some questions about embedded systems jobs, but in order to ask them, I think I need to provide a little background. I'll try to keep it short here I'm in my late 20s. I got my first degree in biomedical engineering, and since there were (are?) no jobs in that field, I became a mechanical engineer in the aerospace field and have been doing that for 5+ years. There are no tech skills involved at this job, it is mostly modeling machined parts and stress analysis. I knew I didn't want to do that, and engineering jobs are fiercely competitive and don't even pay that well, so I started an online program for CS (OSU) a few years ago while I worked my day job, and I will graduate this year. Important to note, that program is really heavy on C and C++. I live in a relatively medium cost of living area with very high housing prices, so my earning potential is my primary concern hunting for a job when I graduate. There are a lot of embedded systems jobs around me, but I have mixed feelings about them. So my question is basically, is taking an embedded systems job as my first job a good decision for me if I want to end up as a pure software engineer? On the one hand, I think they would value my previous engineering degree and experience more than a startup or web service company, so I might earn more out of school post graduation and be taken more seriously as a professional than a new grad? Maybe? On the other hand, I don't think I really want to be a career embedded sys engineer since they get paid less and there is more competition since EEs compete for those jobs too. Am I better off just holding out for a real SWE position, or is this a good segue into the field? Thanks in advance for any advice! [link] [comments] |
Web UI Devs (e.g. React, Angular, et all) how important is pure JS knowledge... Posted: 22 Apr 2018 06:24 PM PDT I am curious for those of you that have been doing web UI with frameworks like React or Angular, how important it is in a job interview to truly know pure Javascript? I want to understand for both a junior and senior level. As an example, for both levels, what sorts of questions are you asked at a startup, or a big N company, during an interview. If you have been working with ReactJS the past couple years, either on your own while doing another job, or as your day job, and are looking to work with ReactJS (in particular, though this could apply to Angular, Vue, etc), what sort of pure JS are you expected to know. I ask this because while I know a bit of ReactJS, I am not a hard core JS developer. I suspect in a job interview, I would fail miserably for not having solid pure JS skills. I understand the basics, but I am far from a senior level with pure JS. [link] [comments] |
When to ask for a pay increase when taking on new responsibilities? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 05:30 PM PDT So I've been working as a self taught dev for approximately 3 years now, and I'm six months into my second job. Recently I've been told that they would like to transition me into a dev lead/implementation lead role. I'm excited and nervous about the opportunity, serious imposter syndrome, but I'll save that for another post. As I transition and take on these new responsibilities at what point should I bring up the compensation discussion? [link] [comments] |
How much paid vacation is typical for software engineers? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:11 PM PDT I want to travel and i'm pretty sure 2 weeks vacation isn't enough. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 06:12 AM PDT Say I was applying for a machine learning position, would a company rather see 1-2 quality projects that were say web applications, or 3-4 projects that might not be as high of quality but machine learning related? [link] [comments] |
In my first job for a month and feel like I'm working too slowly Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:48 PM PDT I feel like tasks take me too long to complete in my first gig. Would it be weird to ask my manager if he thinks I'm too slow/not making enough progress? I tell myself that he would let me know if I weren't meeting expectations, but I'm not sure. Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:43 AM PDT I'm currently finishing up an internship and I have another one lined up for the summer. However I was feeling very down at my current internship and decided that I didn't want to do the second and would rather take summer classes to graduate early, so I did something really stupid and took a big bong hit even though I know I have a drug test within the next two weeks for this second internship. I'm now feeling some remorse and think maybe I should have done the second internship. The second one is more prestigious than my current, and at the time I thought I didn't want to live in my current city anymore and doing a second internship would be a waste of my time. However I'm not sure how far my first internship will get me. I'm at Georgia Tech with a ~3.4 GPA, have several games I've made as projects, some fraternity leadership experience, and an internship doing app development. The second internship was for more software development, which I don't think is what I want to do as a career. I feel as though I wouldn't have been happy there. I'm looking into cyber security now because I think it would be more enjoyable than software development, but I have no experience with it. At this rate I should be graduating in the fall after 3.5 years in college. Did I screw myself by cancelling this internship, or is it not really going to make a difference? [link] [comments] |
How early to start applying for jobs in the San Francisco / Silicon Valley markets? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:34 AM PDT I am moving from the East Coast to San Francisco and I am now identifying companies and positions I want to go out for (11 years of experience building web applications). I am planning to start applying for jobs about 3 months before I will be available to start. Is that too long a timeframe for the market? Too short? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:29 PM PDT Does knowing these technologies give you a higher pay than simply being a Web/Mobile Developer for an E-Commerce business? Does Infrastructure/Operations experience pay higher than a Web/Mobile Developer? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 05:09 AM PDT I've applied far and wide to hundreds of places in the past few months alone, and yet I still can't even get an interview. I've had my resume reviewed by multiple (successful) peers and yet no bites :( I'm beginning to lose motivation, even stopped preparing for interviews because well...I can't even get one. lmao. Anyone else feel this way? [link] [comments] |
I am at a point where i think i should move on with something else Posted: 22 Apr 2018 07:27 PM PDT Graduated dec16 with CS degree from pakistan ( no internship ) major problem in family led to 6 months of Gap. after that started as a trainee ios developer in a small company in pakistan! during training i got my visa to US (thru family, i dont need H1B to work) started applying jobs since january with a polished Resume that was reviewed by many (on here and some connections in market) . almost 1000+ applications all over states and no response( open to relocate). so many rejections and some phone calls by recruiters for some medium sized companies. I am fed up applying for jobs with no response gave up interview practice cuz not getting any interviews. What should i do with my life ? Is it because my degree is from Pakistan? Is it because i have only 3 months of experience ? Just looking for some motivation should i just give up? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Apr 2018 07:19 PM PDT I don't know if this has been asked a lot in the past, but I was wondering if you guys had any advice as far as getting high end internships and what types of side projects to prioritize. I want to really get into learning new languages and processes, but I don't want to have it take significant time away from my school work. Are there any respectable things you all have done to get ahead that would be really worth my time? Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
Should i make a blog for my learning process? Posted: 22 Apr 2018 07:10 PM PDT I'm a college student, majoring in management information system, currently on my second semester.
