    Programming faster

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 04:41 AM PDT

Hey, I'm 24 year old software developer that got a job as a junior software engineer in January. I've never went to university and only studied on my own. Which I started a year ago. I got the job by emailing every godamn company in the vicinty if they would like an intern.

Finally a company decides to take me in. I thought I would have someonw to learn from. But was more or less thrown into projects. At first I was overwhelmed and felt like I couldn't do any of this. I perserved and here I am, seemingly well liked on my job. But I feel two things are wrong, most projects i've gotten someone else had started on years earlier and my job has been to finish them. The code is always horrible bad, no structures, no comments, huge chunks of deprecated code that does nothing when examining closer.

Are all my future work gonna be like this? I, ve gotten one solo project and that was heavenly. Secondly, I feel I write pretty decent code. But I feel like i don't accomplish much code writing day to day, it's mostly spent debugging and figuring how stuff work or googling things.

How do I get away from this?

Completed my first project for The Odin Project and I couldn't be happier.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 09:03 PM PDT

So I started a few days ago. The first project they give you is to recreate Google's search page with just some basic HTML and CSS. At first this felt kind of daunting, as I had done my own pages in the past, but they had never worked out how I wanted. But I was still excited.

Anyways, through a few hours of using some new knowledge, lots of debugging, and using Chrome's dev tools (these are honestly a blessing), I ended up with a near-flawless recreation of the web page. No search functionality, obviously, but stylistically almost exact.

I'm so proud of myself and I just wanted to share this to motivate some other beginners who may be doubting themselves. I know this is an easy and laughable thing for all the experienced developers here, but this is a significant step forward for me and I'm starting to fall in love with coding.

self taught (aspiring) programmer who feels like giving up. could use some words of encouragement from other self-taught coders

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 03:46 PM PDT

about 9 months ago I started teaching myself to code. not even code. just build my own website. it's fucking shit and honestly i'm embarrassed my name is even on it. But i managed to make it while stoned, driving for uber, writing bullshit seo content shit, driving for lyft, walking dogs, substitute teaching and dealing with seriously major depression. I guess the fact that it exists is an accomplishment. and it got me a freelancing gig. at first it was unpaid but the guy running it has spent the last 7 months sequestered for jury duty so they offered to pay me to do it. but it's not real coding work. it's just wordpress plugins and talking to tech support about wordpress plugins. there was a fair amount of SQL involved about a month ago but now it's just front end theme work that most likely won't require any javascript. But the project is 90% done and once it's done i'll get paid. the website does have 400+ users but it's not like i'm doing any real coding work. I'll just be able to talk about the week where I needed to self learn SQL just to migrate users. or changing php redirects. that's about the extent of the coding work.

during that time I started teaching myself Javascript but stopped pursuing it for reasons I can't remember. At the time I had a shitty python project up on github and decided to pursue python since it was easier. also, web development seems mostly design based and I don't have an eye for design. but now i'm applying for jobs and other than being laughably under-qualified i'm seeing that python is the least popular language in job postings in my area. so now I'm trying to learn java. but it's tough. and i feel like an idiot asking questions and I barely made it through the basics on codelab. all the bootcamps in my area are $10,000+ with no financial aid, aggressive payment plans and their 3rd or 4th sentence on their website is very open about how they won't get you a job. i'm sure there are plenty of people here who can attest to their successful bootcamp experience but I don't think I can afford the time or money for it.

but i try to be resilient and trudge on. after all there are tons of success stories on this site from self taught developers. but I don't think i'll ever get to the place where someone wants to take a chance on me. but i try to ignore that voice in my head and continue working. everyday I try to do a little more than the day before. i always tell myself that i'm not failing, i'm just discovering unsuccessful solutions to the problem at hand and more importantly i'm learning why they're unsuccessful. but after almost 9 months I don't know if it's worth pursuing anymore. I've very clearly hit some sort of ceiling and it's getting harder and harder to ignore the exasperation in people's replies in the learnprogramming discord server and on stackoverflow. people redirect me to the oracle guide to java or some other stackoverflow post and it makes sense in the context of their stuff but I struggle to make it work in mine. my parents are so proud of me because they think i'm finally pursuing an interest or at the very least something that can get me paid more than minimum wage but i'm ashamed to take their money. I feel like I'm a bad investment and they're only doing this because they think it's what good parents do. one of the guys on this web development project tells me that a self taught developer's best asset is their work ethic and I know I have it but I feel like I'm on a treadmill, trying as hard as I can but going no where fast. truth be told i think i'm a worthless, lazy piece of shit but the people running my freelance project keep heaping praise on me for my work ethic. one of them even said i was the first millennial they ever met that was willing and wanted to work. they float my name and resume for jobs but I get serious anxiety every time they tell me someone new saw my resume. I don't think I'm ready for a job but more importantly I dont think anyone will think i'm ready.

Lately I've been hearing that I'm not getting any call backs on my resume because my name sounds 'black'. my mom is from south africa and even though I'm white I have an 'african' name. now adults are telling me to get my name legally changed to an american one, at least until I can break in. someone actually told me the best i thing i could do for myself was to get a white name like James Westinghouse, Joey SomeIrishSoundingName or Marco GenericItalianName. (yes I met up with a developer in my area for coffee and that's what he told me). I was specifically told to stick to the names of white presidents and british kings. he said, "there are no billionaires or presidents with your name and there never will be. your name only has value in this industry if you lived in bangaldesh or india and were willing to take an outsourced call center job" or worse, to apply to all jobs with a fake white sounding name but I can't imagine the conversation where I tell them the truth and about my perceived oppression because on paper, I have a black name. what would i even say? "thanks for taking the time to interview me but actually you guys are racist because I lied about my name and you had no way of knowing?" I can't imagine the interview lasting more than 5 minutes if i did that. i'm sure I can get another freelancing gig once this one is done but I don't think installing wordpress plugins is a viable path to a career. and i've worked enough freelancing jobs (copywriting mostly) to know that people are assholes to freelancers. there's always some new reason why they can't pay you. something ALWAYS comes up and somehow it's my fault for following their directions and doing exactly what they wanted only to be told "yeah that's good but it's not what I need. don't give me what I want. give me what I need. then i'll pay you."

but i don't want to give up. even though the work on my github page is so bad i'm afraid to share it here.

    https://github.com/amustafa15

here it is. the java project is incomplete and is only up there so I could get help from a friend. the python maps project is the only complete one other than the website but that's pretty bad. i was going to fix my website but then i got the freelancing gig and figured an active site with 400+ users says more than my shitty site that gets maybe 1 view per month. java and c are the most in demand languages in my area and i'm pursuing java because codingbat is a pretty good site. i know this is long and rambling but I don't know what to do next. i want to start applying for jobs but i feel like i'm terribly underqualified and need to do more work. i guess i'm just looking for constructive criticism or words of support or whatever.

    Multithread + Multiple Functions?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 10:10 PM PDT

The way my code is set up is

    1. Queue of raw audio
    2. Function1
    3. Queue of audio processed once
    4. Function2
    5. List of final audio

Queue gets a new item once every ~10 seconds.

I have multithreading working for the fist queue. But how can I organize it so that the threads put processed audio in #3 immediately after #1, and start #4 as soon as #3 isn't empty? As of right now, I'm just joining after each queue, which can't be maximally efficient.

I'm working in Python, for the record.

How do people in other countries program?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 11:43 AM PDT

This is a bit of a dumb question, but how does programming work in countries like Japan? Do they have their own set of programming languages that work with their native language? Or do they have to learn a bit of English to use things like Python, Java, C, C++, etc, because they seem to all be English based.

Need help capturing file uploads from an upload dom element created by p5js sketch.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 09:16 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I've been learning p5js and one of the things I want to make is a simple soundboard. This is actually to help me add on-the-fly sounds for my live streams, but i've gone a little outside my google-fu skills.

    Current, brief, spec:

    • A simple p5js powered canvas with clickable buttons.
    • Each button will check if it's been assigned a sound the first time it's clicked. If not, it creates a file and text input dom element with a submit button. The user can choose a local file and name the button whatever they want.
    • Upon hitting send during the assignment process, the file gets brought into memory to be played by the p5 sound library whenever the button is clicked. This is tracked through an in-memory link between the button name (given by the user or autogenerated on lack of text input) and the sound file.
    • When the user presses the button after assigning it, the sound file will play.
    • A stop button will be provided to stop all sounds.
    • A toggle for overlapped or interrupted sounds will be available.
    • None of this is persistent through refresh-- I don't want to manage a database.

Currently, most of the spec is already working. The hiccup I'm having is creating a dom to take in a file, and have that file loaded into memory for use once the user hits send. Could anyone provide any insight into how I'd accomplish this?

If it helps, I want to do this kind of specifically: I'd like to have this dom created/destroyed/hidden through my sketch or a dom manager script rather than the index.html file itself.

Thank you in advance for any help! I'll answer as many questions as I can.

Edit: The reason I'm not hardcoding in the sound files is because this is going to be hosted on a github spaces page where my friends can load an instance of it themselves and play with it with their own local files. I don't want to deal with managing files outside of the single instance of the page.

Can anyone speak for UCI or UCLAs coding boot camp?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 08:30 PM PDT

I know there has been posts about these schools boot camp in the past but the ones I have been able to find were outdated and I'm certainly positive that these programs could have changed a lot by then. I'm curious if anyone here has attended any of these boot camps or any other boot camps in California in general. If so,

    1) What did you think about the boot camp? How are the resources that are available to you and how are the professors? 2) What did you do afterwards? 3) How well do you bond with your peers? Did you make any lasting friendships or have you been able to build any connections with them?

Also, this question can be answered by anyone but what do you guys think is the most cost efficient learning process for learning programming. I know that it's very possible to learn everything online but what other options are there for me that includes classrooms and peers such as coding boot camps?

I am aware about most of the people on this subreddits opinion on coding boot camps but I am mostly interested in these boot camps because I prefer fast paced learning environments. I also learn a lot better under pressure and when around others. Learning online from start by myself is not for me. However I do plan on learning more and practicing to become better after the boot camp.

A quick Python script I wrote to search GitHub for beginner level issues. (Using the GitHub API)

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 11:36 PM PDT

    https://github.com/KirwanElmsly/beginner-issues

This is a quick Python script to grab the latest beginner issues off GitHub. I decided to do this after realising there wasn't a way to search for multiple labels on GitHub.

For each label within "labels.txt", the script uses the GitHub API to search open issues, restricted to a language (It's hardcoded to Python at the moment). And writes the results to a "results.txt", sorting by most recent. I've restricted it to one search every 6 seconds as the GitHub Search API limits requests to 10 per minute.

If anyone thinks this is useful or silly or has any feedback at all, please let me know.

There's plenty of websites about C++, but they're all so old and they don't really explain things very well. The online documentation for the Rust programming language is great (https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/). I'd love one like that for C++

Does anybody actually use their old textbooks?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 09:27 AM PDT

I'm currently wrapping up my first semester as a computer science major in college and I'm currently wondering if I should keep my textbooks (one is on Java, one is on C++, and one is on Linux environments).

I rented these books over amazon for the semester and would have to pay a little bit more just to keep them.

Is it worth it to do so? I haven't really used them over the course of the semester, but I can't help wondering if I'll eventually need them or find them helpful when google fails me.

Is JQuery something worth learning still? Or should I just go with React/Angular?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 06:42 AM PDT

I'm reading that jQuery doesn't necessarily need to be used anymore. A lot of the Job requirements for junior roles from where I am (London) are asking for React or Angular. I've seen very few posted with jQuery as a requirement.

At the same time I want to make sure I have the skills necessary to make my application look attractive.

Is C suitable for general purposes (beginner)?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 10:00 AM PDT

I'm a complete beginner and intend on learning programming but mainly for just recreational purposes for now. With that being said after reading the side bar i realized i don't have a specific goal in mind so i don't really know what language to go off of. I just genuinely enjoy learning about computers especially more so the science behind it, the very basic functions and their purposes. I was considering C after hearing its kind of the mother of all languages but heard it can be challenging and it would be better to start off with something like Java or Python.

Is C a good choice for wanting to have a general foundation?

What is the proper method for troubleshooting code?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 09:07 PM PDT

I study computer science and feel like I waste a lot of time troubleshooting code, but I also think that's because I probably don't troubleshoot in the most efficient way.

I feel like I'm just guessing and checking, and it's driving me crazy. Right now I'm stuck building a circular array, and I can't get the tail pointer to work properly, so I'm getting null inside my array.

With a compiler like IntelliJ (what I'm using) there must be a way to step through the code as its running, to see what happens at each step? This seems easier, and less taxing than 100% of the time trying to decipher where I fucked up the logic. Any tips please.... LPT needed here lol.

(C++) A Better Way To Validate Input To Only Be Positive #'s? This Is Repetitive

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 08:39 PM PDT

This seems like I'm typing a lot too repetitiously to validate the input is positive on this program.

Having some issues figuring out if I'd be able to write a function to do this validation instead of writing the same while loop, only changing the variable each time. Surely there's something I'm not thinking of.

Any thoughts? (thanks so much for your time!)

    { // 4 quarters for array storage int Qrt1, Qrt2, Qrt3, Qrt4; // Prompts the user for quarter sales of each division 1 - 6 cout << "Enter Sales of Division: " << division + 1 << endl; cout << "Enter Q1 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt1; while (Qrt1 < 0) // Input validation to only accept positive { cout << "You have entered a negative value. \nPlease try again.\n"; cout << "Enter Q1 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt1; } cout << "Enter Q2 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt2; while (Qrt2 < 0) // Input validation to only accept positive { cout << "You have entered a negative value. \nPlease try again.\n"; cout << "Enter Q2 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt2; } cout << "Enter Q3 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt3; while (Qrt3 < 0) // Input validation to only accept positive { cout << "You have entered a negative value. \nPlease try again.\n"; cout << "Enter Q3 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt3; } cout << "Enter Q4 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt4; while (Qrt4 < 0) // Input validation to only accept positive { cout << "You have entered a negative value. \nPlease try again.\n"; cout << "Enter Q4 Sales: "; cin >> Qrt4; }

    Is bootstrap going away?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2018 11:28 AM PDT

I stopped paying attention to the frontend because keeping up became way too difficult but are bootstrap 4, semantic ui, and all of those rich, jquery-dependent js/css frameworks going away? I mean, they will not be phased out overnight, especially since there are tons of legacy projects that depend on.

I know there are (I believe all unofficial) react-bootstrap and angular-bootstrap projects out there that rip out the JQuery but the base/official project depends on JQuery. I just don't quite understand the stance on these JS/CSS frameworks since JQuery is being avoided. Personally, I write traditional applications with JQuery but now I'm learning react (without JQuery).
