Isn't there a term/name for this type of approach to web app development?

A couple projects ago, I was speaking with some recent grad's who had mentioned these types of web apps becoming more of a thing in academia (eidt: and elsewhere I'm sure, sadly I find my head buried in the sand more often then I'd like admittedly....). I personally have no degree, so now with more time on my hands I'm trying to dig in more but google is no help so far.
