When a client knows everything because they made games for the ZX Spectrum in the 80s...

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 11:12 AM PST

Just had a funny phone call with a potential client (unlikely now). They say they want to update their website. Their site that is built with tables. Has no stylesheets. Doesn't have headings or a site map. A total shit show. They want a WordPress site they tell me. Great, no problem.

Then we have our phone call. He asks what needs to be done. I start talking them through it step by step. I tell them a bit about setting up WordPress and they cut me off mid-sentence and announce that they can do that because they made games for the ZX Spectrum in the 80s. Fair enough. They probably could.

I move onto SEO. I can do that he says. He worked in marketing for years. Right... Fair enough.

So I move onto branding, logo design etc. I can do that he says. He was a graphic designer in the 90s. Right.

The site is for his guitar teaching school. So I guess he is a musician now. What a guy.

So then I asked him what would he like me to do. I think I can take care of it myself he says. I say good on you. Give me a shout if you need any help.

He sounded genuinely delighted with this outcome, he was one very satisfied almost-client.

I guess I'll hear from him soon.

Need Advice: Anxious about starting my first job.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 01:53 PM PST

After 4 months of job hunting after graduation, I finally got my first job offer, which I accepted and I start on March 1st! Of course I am very happy, I'm also caught up in a frenzy because I need to rent in another city and move. But I'm also anxious.

I will be working as a Junior Software Engineer, I think mostly with Java, MySQL and JavaScript. The thing is that other than a vague picture of the languages I will be using, I don't have much information, I don't know if I should be doing any preparation, study, research, anything. (At this point I have about 6 days left, and I'll be spending the majority of time trying to rent an apartment.) During the 3-stage interviews I was clear about what tools/frameworks/languages I can use, when I was asked.

During my interview I asked the HR person to tell me more about the tools/technologies but she didn't know much. So now I'm left here thinking that I might go there on my first day and look like an idiot who doesn't know shiiiiz and I'll need to google all the stuff (because that's how I usually work on my projects), can anyone help me out here? I would appreciate it!

Code quality metrics for front-end development?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 03:35 PM PST

I am looking for suggestions for a meaningful way to determine the overall health of my large front-end code base on an ongoing basis. Does anyone have any specific tools they have used to achieve something like this?

I have looked into linters, but I am not necessarily sure those will provide me with a solid metric. The code base consists mostly of Haml, scss, javascript, and ruby.

LazyLoading necessary for images served via Cloudinary?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 03:34 PM PST

Hi, we're working on an image heavy website (which may be served in >50mbps down venues) hosted by AirshipCMS and are wondering if LazyLoading is necessary/ beneficial to our users in this case. I've read varying opinions on the subject and looked through a bunch of different methods. We're already implementing Slick Carousels lazy loading and are thinking about implementing a LazyLoader for the vertical scrolling.

How to sharpen my HTML and CSS skills?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 07:27 AM PST

Hi everyone ! I am pretty new to web development, focusing on front-end for now, and I have a big problem, at least that's how I think of it... I don't know what to do in order to sharpen my CSS and HTML skills before moving forward to starting javascript. I'd like to get to know these two skill-sets better first, then proceed at the more complex stuff. Been watching dozens of tutorials, guides, reading texts on the internet for about a month and a half now, and I'm advancing at a steady pace. Sometimes it feels I know most of the stuff related to CSS and HTML and that I should proceed to JS, other times I'm panicking, not sure if I know enough. I'm having the most difficulties with CSS grid and flexbox, so I know I should train those more, but all in all, I just dont know where to find like projects to do, or some web pages as references that I could make for now.

Do you have any tips for me? I really enjoy doing this stuff, and even though its been only a month and a half, I think and I hope I won't loose motivation to exercise every day. As I said above, my biggest problem is finding references of what to do, projects, and sometimes I'm not sure if I know enough or not (although I'm pretty sure thats a common thing for beginners) =) Thanks in advance!

Creating an anchor tag which points to a pdf doesn't work.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 02:11 PM PST

    <li class="tab"><a href='./images/resume.pdf' style={{color:"white"}}> Resume</a></li>

However, when I click on it, nothing happens.

The pdf file is saved under images/resume.pdf, and in the same directory as App.js (using React). Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Will WordPress affect the future of web development jobs?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 01:48 PM PST

I'm a first semester computer science major and just wanted the opinion of those more experienced. Will options such as WordPress for designing websites eventually make web development jobs more accessable? Making them less lucrative? O stunt have much experience with WordPress at the moment so I don't know if there are inherent limitations to such a thing. Any thoughts from the professionals?

Edit: please excuse me if this seems like a stupid question

Gig economy for web devs - what is your opinion?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 09:35 AM PST

I'm an older web developer (18 years experience) in the US and have been on my own freelancing for several years, doing long term website design and development projects. Work that requires a lot of relationship building, learning about the businesses, hand holding after delivery, etc.

So I've been toying with the idea of signing up with one of those freelance job matching sites. To augment these longer-term, more intimate jobs with shorter-term work. Hopefully jobs I can knock out without having to deal too much with all those other things that come with more deeply-invested clients.

To anyone who has tried this, what has been your experience? Which sites would you recommend? Can you get satisfying work? Or is this something that someone like me should avoid? Thanks in advance. I know there's a freelance subreddit, but based on what I read there, I'd like to hear from you.

What is the best way to trigger web animations on webscroll?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 09:13 AM PST

I'm starting to dabble with CSS transitions and animations, as well as JS animation libraries like Greensock and D3.js. Now that I have some basics down, I'm wondering how best to go about controlling them. Are there any common techniques, or does it all depend on the animation?

Some websites that I'm looking at as examples:

Looking to consolidate this regex expression for use in custom channel rule in Data Studio

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 12:34 PM PST

I have over 500 pages that continue pass this small sample. I would like to know if there is a way to dynamically perform the following code without me having to write out a rule for each page in this category.

I am using this to define a custom channel in Data Studio, this code works but it times-out because it exceeds the character limits.

    The Code:

CASE WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-one(.*)") THEN "Page One" WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-two(.*)") THEN "Page Two" WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-three(.*)") THEN "Page Three" WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-four(.*)") THEN "Page Four" WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-five(.*)") THEN "Page Five" WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-six(.*)") THEN "Page Six" WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-seven(.*)") THEN "Page Seven" WHEN REGEXP_MATCH(Page, "(.*)category\\/page-eight(.*)") THEN "Page Eight" END

How do you managing your patience?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 08:47 AM PST

I've been working in the front-end development field for about 6+ years now, but I've noticed that I've become more and more agitated over the years. New tools, new logic, new code, new methods.

How do you manage your patiences so that you don't know end up burning out or blowing up at a coworker? How do you explain things when you're feeling lost. So lost that you can't even explain what lost is. Ever been there?
