A while back, I shared the idea of an Urban Dictionary for coding terms. You liked it, so I built it.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 08:50 AM PST

Wait, this looks familiar...: I shared this project a few weeks ago, but it was not on a Show Off Saturday (just a Typical Tuesday). If you've seen this before, here's what's new: based on your feedback, I added Google and Github login, design updates, URL updates!

A few months ago, I posted here about a Urban Dictionary/Stack Overflow for coding terms, and you guys were really encouraging of the idea. While learning to code, I'd often fall down a rabbit hole of research for things I didn't really need. There are lots of resources that teach you how to do something, but few explain when and why. So, over the past few months, I built Hackterms - a crowdsourced dictionary of programming terms to answer these questions:

    1. at a high level, what does this tool/process/concept do? When is it used? What are the alternatives?
    2. Is this worth my time to learn now?

Check out the definitions, let me know what you think, and feel free to contribute!

TL;DR: Hackterms - simple definitions that explain when/where/why programming terms are used (but not how to use them). Built in Node/Express, Mongo, jQuery.

    First NodeJS Website

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:18 PM PST

    www.cryptoquotes.ca

This is the first site I ever made with a backend using Node and Express. Its basically just a site to compare prices of different cryptos from different exchanges, as well as aggregate sites.

I am thinking about removing the exchanges group based on Bitcoin. I just think that if somebody is daytrading, they will watch prices on their exchange(i.e. Binance).

I also plan on adding ads to the site once I flesh it out more.

Just wondering if anyone has tips or advice for me or general feedback, thanks!

What do you guys use for deployment and dev environments for your small scale and freelance projects?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 05:34 AM PST

In my corperate job we have a local git repos, a dedicated testing server, and we use Bamboo to deploy to our three production servers. If I were starting a personal project I'd use github and call it a day.

For those of you with clients on godaddy, bluehost, etc, what do you use to manage the chaos? Back in the day when I freelanced I primarily used ftp and a prayer--I imagine there are much better ways now for managing small wordpress sites and the like.

Want to create/join a community of beginner coders.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:49 AM PST

Hey everyone, So I've been learning web Dev since last 1 year and am trying to get better at it month by month.i just read that joining a community is a great idea as it has too many pros as compared to learning alone. I searched up a bit but couldn't find any good online community just for beginners. I'm just posting here as if you also like the coding together idea, we could create a community ourselves. Have a lot of ideas for it also. Comment or DM if interested.

[Show Off Saturday] Feedback for my app that allows your friends to control what song is playing on Spotify.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 11:46 AM PST

Here the project that I have been working on in my free time since thanksgiving: partyhero.io

I want to gather some general feedback on this web app. Here's the tech I used:

    • React for the front end
    • Material Design Components
    • CSS Grid
    • Express backend
    • firebase for database and real time updates
    • Zeit Now for deployments and hosting

This is a MVP so the features are kind of basic but hopefully I can iterate on it. Any feedback is appreciated.

Note: The splash page is a bootstrap template I found online so I can't take any credit for it.

    Thank you!

Best approach to change primary color to user selected color?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 03:18 PM PST

I was wondering what the best approach would be to change the primary color of a page or series of pages based on the user input?

For example, a user could change their primary profile color to yellow even though the site default primary color is blue. I believe Twitter allows you to do this.

My current approach would be to override that with inline styles when the page is rendered (i.e. throw a <style> section on the page with overrides), but that seems pretty dirty. Is there an easier way that I'm completely missing? Thanks in advance for any help / suggestions.

How to document a Python web API

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 12:14 PM PST

It is Showoff Saturday & lots of you will get design feedback. Here is the design process in steps. Self Learners this is for you.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 02:11 PM PST

Sorry about the title gore. Here is some of the stuff I learned in design school - and also some of the stuff I teach my design students. The design process:

    1. Inspiration. You can't design successfully without creative prompts. Our minds don't really work that way and you need to train it to "see" design. So, do a Google search for website inspiration. Now here's the thing. Dont' copy other peoples work. You are using these designs to inspire creativity and ideas for your own project. Its fine to take an element of a design you really like so long as you are putting your own spin on it. Iterate.

    2. Make a "mood board". This is pretty easy. Go to one of the design inspiration subreddits and over to the photography subreddit. You are looking for imagery that in some way inspires you to inspire the design. Could be the colors. Could be the mood or feel of the photo. DO NOT use the persons photo in your design. It would be a copyright issue if you dont' have the photographers permission. It is for inspiration and mood only. There are lots of free stock sites to grab open domain images from for use in your site. Note: You can simply use a folder on your drive to store all this material. It don't have to be on an actual board or anything. Just make sure that you have quick access to it for reference while making your design.

    3. Spend some time browsing Pintrest for color palettes. Find something you like, use the colors in your design. No, Pintrest is not just for moms to share recipes. Its a great place for design inspiration. Include your palettes in the moodboard.

    4. Spend some time looking at typography inspiration. There are several sites that are specific for this purpose. Google typography inspiration. Take some screenshots of type styles you like and include them in your mood board.

    5. Now, the hard part. Put all the stuff in front of you, open up Gimp, or Photoshop, or Illustrator or really any design tool (Sketch is nice and cheap and a great program), and start boxing out a layout using the rectangle shape tool. Make sure that the boxes follow a 12 column vertical grid in order for it to be an easy transition to the bootstrap framework. Once you have the empty boxes that represent the layout, start adding in your copy, buttons, images, etc to those boxes. You can remove the boxes as you fill the space with your content. Mess around with your color pallet a bit. Find out what works and what don't. Pay close attention to the actual layout of the elements on your inspirations sites. Pay special attention to the text and the elements that surround it. Make sure your text is easily readable by increasing or decreasing line height. Make sure you include plenty of margin or padding between text and the surrounding elements.

    6. Get feedback on the design from other designers. Use the design feedback subreddit. Make adjustments as needed.

    7. Once you have something you like, open your editor and start putting it to code.

Important note: Skipping steps in this process will produce less than desired results. Design is a process. Lots of people are not familiar with design and assume there is just some magic formula to follow. Its not that simple. Design takes work, iterations, and feedback to be successful.

    Good luck!

    Edit: Clarified moodboard

    Bootstrap Design Review

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:28 AM PST

So i'm designing a basic show page for a personal project for a property site. I'm trying to make my show page for a individual property look better, but I'm not a designer, and I have no idea where to start.

I'm not looking for anything amazing, but simple pointers either code/design wise would be great.

Here is an image of the page so far https://imgur.com/a/NTdpF

Advice on making a Web site for memorial golf outing

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 02:07 PM PST

Hey all, I wasn't sure if this was a good place to ask, so if not, I apologize in advance. I'm helping a friend plan a memorial golf tournament this summer and I thought it would be nice if I could surprise her with a Web site dedicated to the goings-on. It would be a simple site with a handful of pages most likely. The only thing is that I'm not sure where to start. Any advice on what the best (And cheap) hosting option would be? I've done some front-end work, so I'm not too worried about that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How do you deal with distractions?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:57 AM PST

I am learning little bit javascript and some other web development related languages. Sometimes i get easily distracted by my phone or i feel that i need to watch a nice youtube video. Sometimes i play some music and end up with listen to it for half our. I feel like it's a bad habit but i do it totally unconsciously. Maybe because it's too boring to study in few hours and do nothing else.. I also use Pomodoro so i got my breaks but i am not sure what should i use those breaks on. Any thoughts?

Do you think that it's bad habit or is it totally normal?

Looking for CMS recommendation: e-commerce with helpdesk ticketing system for users?

I have a job interview soon and I know one of the questions they'll ask how I would go about building the above. I am pretty good with HTML, CSS, Javascript, Java, a bit of C# but I have no experience with PHP or Ruby.

What do you guys think I should recommend? There will potentially up to 1000 users. Not sure if Wordpress is a good solution for this situation. Maybe Drupal?

How come Chai-js done() function is preventing my unit tests from passing, when all the expected conditions are met?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:12 PM PST

My tests are working and passing, but chai's done function is messing up. I've tried a few different methods, but I don't understand where I'm going wrong in these unit tests. I'm very new to unit testing and chai, so any help would be greatly appreciated

The places where the test is failing: line 40 (create), line 98 (update)

    Any ideas?

    const chai = require('chai') let should = chai.should() let expect = chai.expect let db = require('../app/models') db.hosts.modelName = 'Hosts' db.victims.modelName = 'Victims' let models = [db.hosts, db.victims] models.forEach(model => { describe(`${model.modelName} Model`, function (done) { var modelData = { guest_count: 3, start_date: "2018-01-11T00:00:00.000Z", end_date: "2018-01-12T00:00:00.000Z", location: { type: "Point", coordinates: [ -74.323564, 40.232323 ] }, first_name: "Sean", last_name: "Destroyed", phone: "7325556677", address: "123 main street, red bank, nj", email: "test@gmail.com", } it(`should create a new ${model.modelName}`, function () { model.create(modelData).then(function (user) { //victim name should be equivalent to the fake submission we are using expect(user.first_name).to.equal("Sean"); //remove the entry from the database model.destroy({ where: { id: user.id } }) done() }) }); it(`should delete a ${model.modelName} from the database`, function () { model.create(modelData).then(function (user) { //victim name should be equivalent to the fake submission we are using //remove the entry from the database model.destroy({ where: { id: user.id } }) try { model.findOne({ where: { id: user.id } }) } catch (err) { expect(user.first_name).to.undefined; if (err) { done() } } }) }) it(`should update the ${model.modelName} entry in the database`, function () { model.create(modelData).then(function (user) { //after user is created, then update a value modelData.guest_count = 12 model.update(modelData, { where: { id: user.id } }).then(function(data) { model.findOne({ where: { id: user.id } }).then(function (data) { expect(data.guest_count).to.equal(12); }).then(function () { model.destroy({ where: { id: user.id } }) }).then(function() { done() }) }) }) }) }) });

Activated SSL certificate in Dreamhost website last week, how do I get google to point to the https site instead of the unsecured?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 11:48 AM PST

The installation went smoothly, I did the free LetsEncrypt SSL.

When I input the url into the address bar, it goes to the green lock secured site and the cert is displaying properly.

But when I search the site through google, the google link still points to the site and it says unsecured with the grey circle i icon.

How do I get google to point to the https version of my site?

And 1 related question, are the urls:

    www.examplewebsite.com

    examplewebsite.com

    https://examplewebsite.com

all the same website or no?

    Thanks!

    Salary negotiation

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 07:13 AM PST

Hi, I'm 2 months in to my first job as a associate software developer fresh out of a bootcamp where I graduated top of my class. I was actually self-taught before the bootcamp, so I have about 2years in total of programming experience.

Being so excited about reciving an offer from a pretty big company, I just took their first offer without any negotiation that came out to about 2% below the base salary in my area. (Dumb move on my part.. but hey you live and learn...)

Without sounding too arrogant, I've been in full autonomous mode since the 3rd week on the job and I have been getting praises by a couple of my leads for my code, communication, and hard work. I have been out performing another junior that they hired at the same time (who has 1+ years of work experience w/ a higher salary). In addition, my output has been greater than a few seniors on my teams for the past couple sprints.

One of the seniors that I'm cool with told me that they should be promoting me soon, but I don't know if that holds any value since he's not really a lead. My main question-- is it common for junior devs to ask for a promotion before or around 6 months? How would you approach this situation? Any advice would be greatly apppreciated!
