Looking for advice on backend to choose

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 08:45 AM PST

Hey I'm developing a school management and CMS app for students and teachers and am researching a bunch on which are the best Backend languages/frameworks to use.

We're fairly OK with PHP/Laravel and Node.js but are considering .NET for its performance and strictness for a medium-large application like this. We're developing the Frontend prototype in Vue.js and will be using the Backend mostly as an API provider. We also know that the best tool is the one you're comfortable with but we'd like to have a fresh opinion on the matter.

Would really enjoy some light from more experienced developers on which you find best :)

    Static HTML -> Wordpress Guides?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 08:29 AM PST

So company I work for now uses Wordpress often. A couple sites have been static HTML/CSS/JS. But I want to learn how to take my static code into wordpress.

I believe our backend dev uses a theme called underscores and stripped some stuff out and customizes it from there.

We used to go backend -> front but found front -> back was preferred by our clients as we could show them their site live earlier in the process.

I know there are wordpress guides out there but a lot of them seem to spend time explaining wordpress and going through setting it up and setting up commonly used plugins.

I have experience using ACF and such. I get splitting code up into header.php footer.php etc and doing the calls on page templates that need them.

    We use BS4 as well.

NOt sure if I would need a good guide/videos on custom themes or what. But any resources would be great!

The dev I work with is hellbent on me learning a marketable skill so that if I leave I learned something and wasn't just pigeonhold into doing the front end work.

    Automatic Internal Linking

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:44 PM PST

How do websites do large-scale internal linking automatically? For example, sports sites which will automatically link a player's name to their player page whenever an article/blog/message board post mentions that player.

Are they really doing this on a loop checking every player name in their database against the content of a post when it's submitted? Is it done in batch occasionally? Or is there an alternative that doesn't involve just looping through checking for keywords?

Looking for some advice and or insights on which path should I go about a project

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 11:45 AM PST

So, I've been away to web dev for a while, switched to a support role as finances was tight back then. Now I'm a little bit better, I want to dive in back, starting from passive income and then hopefully I can jump back as a dev.

I've never really built anything with Angular, React or Vue, but I've been reading them since 2016 or so, I've hoarded a lot of tutorials from a lot of resources, fcc, udemy, lynda, youtube channels etc. I think I have almost gbs worth of these videos, I became overwhelmed and I don't know what to start with.

Looking at the current market in my country, it seems React would be the best choice as there are still few React devs here.

So enough with the background, and apologies for that.

What I plan now, is to recreate my college paper, registration with reservation and inventory management system built using CI legacy and to built it from scratch using JS in the front end and in the backend as a refresher. However I don't know how do I go from there.

    What I have in mind

    • React or Vue for frontend
    • For database or backend stuff here I don't know what to do, I asked some people, they said I can still use PHP for the model and controller and don't include view, but then I should just use the backend stuff as a Restful API and then just fetch it with react? Is that viable? I don't know
    • I also heard of GraphQL but they also mentioned that the learning curve is quite steep
    • If I try node or something similar, elixir maybe? I've heard of it too but not sure, are they able to do what mvc and oop approach PHP frameworks does?

Sorry for quite the long post, I've been holding this for a while now, I've done some googling and stuff but I can't come up with a solid answer that's why I'm coming to you guys, been a lurker for sometime now.

What would be the best path to take and to focus given the scenario?

Or is this even doable? I really want to try out React.. but stuck on the backend stuff and what and how to use properly given the current web standards.

Finishing off - VueJS and final conclusions

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 09:32 AM PST

Going to start freelancing soon. Advice for negotiating salary.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 11:14 AM PST

So I'll just start from the beginning. For about a year I have been volunteering for a tech worker networking group. I got a lot of work done, but the guy overseeing the project with me had personal issues to deal with and so no work was done between May - December. Now the board members or whatever in the group just want the site done since it's just been a stepping stone for young people seeking experience like myself. Apparently they've gone through 3 project managers and 4 volunteers over the course of 3 years and some change. So now they asked me if I would take money to finish it. For salary I said $175 for the project because I was unaware of some of the parameters, board member arguments about design, and how big of a time commitment it would be. Basically they told me on Friday that all work we previously did would need to be redone. The site has 400+ users. They want me to clone the old site to a staging site and then update the content, user registration software, design and how jobs are posted and whatnot. I guess I mistook how easy wordpress is... and the incompetence of some of the board members. So now that they want me to restart the project, they offered to redo my fee for the project. So what is appropriate for something like this. I'm putting in an average of 20 hours a week on it. So just any salary tips would be helpful.

edit: I still have some work to get started on and have to have an update when I do my weekly check in on Friday. Obviously trying to get as much done as possible and keep track of hours I spent working it for better leverage.
Also they want to make me the webmaster once I"m done. Any ideas for the salary on that?

Resume Review - Limited Skills - Job Fair Coming Up

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 10:20 AM PST

    Resume Link

I'm going to job fair next week and updated my resume. I have limited skills as I just started learning development. (I was laid off a few months ago and choose to change careers) I've been a techie all my life, have some schooling in tech, and I have stellar soft skills. I also expect my level and skill set to grow in the next few months.

I am not expecting any interviews but want to get out and network as I feel as I will have the coding chops in two to three months and can reach back out to those prospective employers.

So lay it on me reddit. What do you think? What would you keep, get rid of? What would you word differently? What wording do you like? Thanks!

    edit: formatting

    Best beginner back-end tools ?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 10:11 AM PST

I have been coding front-end for a while now, mostly SPAs and one-time models to solve someone's problem. I think it is time to expand my horizon a bit and start implementing databases. Here is the problem, I have no clue when it comes to back-end. Before I start to learn resources (free or paid) I want to make sure I start at the right spot.

What is the best/easiest/most effective way to connect a front-end site to a back-end?

What kind of data do you choose to save on the back-end (other that user data for logins etc), do you save objects, images, text?

I am looking for something like:

HTML/CSS/JS > API > Back-end, name those APIs and back-end of your choice so that I get an idea what works well together.

    Cheers

Allowing my users to connect their accounts with paypal without Paypal for Marketplaces or Braintree Marketplace?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 12:41 PM PST

I run a site where artists can essentially sell their services (site found here: https://commend.me/) for money.

Right now, artists can connect their account with Stripe Connect and receive payments that way (and the site takes a small fee).

However, a lot of people want to connect their accounts with paypal and not stripe, which is understandable.

The problem is that Braintree Marketplace is no longer accepting new applicants, and Paypal for Marketplaces is in closed beta (we applied but we're not holding our breath).

Is there even another solution for this?

Recommendations for building a mathy blog

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:38 AM PST

I want to build a bloggish site where I can easily use Markdown / LaTeX for displaying math. People should also be able to comment on the posts.

I know I could use something like Wordpress, with which I have worked before, but it has a huge overhead (is it even a problem, though?), so I was hoping you could point me in a more appropriate direction.

Definitely not an experienced dev, I am familiar just with HTML, CSS, JS, PHP and Python, if that's relevant.

I'm making a ChatBot Platform on the base of Laravel. If I will have multiple clients with multiple type of API calls should I make the "API parser" (the Controller what generates, process and then work up the result what can the Bot interpret) in a separate app or in the same app?

Redux question: Can I have some feedback on my approach to naming functions that dispatch actions vs the action types themselves (more of a redux question)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 05:39 AM PST

I'm a huge beginner to react/redux and I started to think about refactoring code. One thing I did which made things cleaner and more understandable for myself was to change the name of the functions that dispatch actions to describe what the application was doing, and I would change the name of the actions themselves to describe how it was changing the store.

So for example if I wanted to fetch data, I would name the action creator fetchData, and I would name the actions SET_ISFETCHING, SET_DATA, and even SET_ERROR. I would not have call my action FETCH_DATA, as this would break the rules I set for myself.

As you can see, the names of the actions are just named after what they are doing to the store, whereas the name of the wrapper function describes the application.

You end up with something like this, which is very readable IMO:

    function fetchData(){ dispatch({type:SET_ISFETCHING,isFetching:true}); makeRequest(function(err,data){ dispatch({type:SET_ISFETCHING,isFetching:false}); if (err) dispatch({type:SET_ERROR,err:err}); else dispatch({type:SET_DATA,data:data}); }); }

React/redux peeps - what do you think of this approach? Approve? Disapprove?

Navigation Links Sometimes Shrinking on Mobile

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 08:29 AM PST

I'm working on a personal blog, and I recently rewrote the theme that I'm using from the ground up (I'm using Jekyll to generate static pages). It works fine on my computer, but on my phone the navigation links are sometimes much smaller than they should be. On other pages though, they look fine. The shrinking always happens on the same pages, but I haven't been able to find a pattern.

I'm very confused, because I know that the HTML and CSS for the header are exactly the same on each of the pages. How can I go about diagnosing the problem?

I'm willing to post code snippets (CSS files, relevant parts of the header) but I'd rather not link to it directly, since I'd rather not link my real life with this account.
