I see a lot of posts about devs who struggle with CSS. Anyone here have a bad time with JavaScript? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:15 AM PST I can crank out page layout and design like nobody's business. However even ever 3 years of reading, writing, practicing, side projects and hiring private tutors I just am helplessly bad at JavaScript. I'm working on changing careers to a more UX Design/research focused field and some HTML/CSS for prototyping. It's just frustrating to pour so much time and effort into something to not see much improvement. I was curious if anyone else here if any other Front End Devs have the same problem, or am I just an anomaly that somehow beat the system? It seems like my peers over the years don't have as much trouble with JS as I do. [link] [comments]

Just how much SQL is necessary for this career? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 03:11 AM PST In college currently. Taking various languages as part of the degree plan. C++ is great so far. CSS, enjoying it too. JavaScript, I like it. But SQL...SQL... We are using Oracle 11g. This is by far the hardest class I've ever taken. I struggle to wrap my head around it. What doesn't help is our textbook is bad, and Googling is a frustrating jumble. I don't plan to be a DBA or back end, if I can help it. Even less inclined after taking this class. So how much is it used by the average web programmer? [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Feb 2018 03:34 PM PST I'm not sure if this is the correct place to put this, but here it goes... My company is allowing me to re-design their website (using wix) and it looks pretty good. I've got the domain linked and it's in the process of switching over so it's entirely under Wix. My problem is that sometimes, when the website is typed into a browser, it goes to the new site, but on some computers\phones, it goes to the old site still. It's the SAME exact web address. Not sure what's causing this. For example, my pc at home goes to the old site, but my tablet and phone go to the new one. Are the devices that go to old versions simply 'cached' somehow, and pulling up old information? [link] [comments]

How to best host an online directory (internal) Posted: 27 Feb 2018 02:34 PM PST Hello! I have no web development experience, but I wanted to know what an expert's suggestion is on hosting an internally hosted document repository. I would like to have the ability to upload/read documents, preferably with formatting but this is NOT required, and a search function. This repository must NOT be connected outside the internal network. Thank you so very much for any help you may offer! <3 [link] [comments]
Course recommendations with egghead pacing Posted: 27 Feb 2018 02:26 PM PST I was just wondering if anyone can recommend (mainly) front end courses with the fast pacing of egghead.io? I love the fast pace that I can pause/rewind if necessary, rather than the boringly slow hours and hours of explanation of some courses out there. Only problem with egghead is they are primarily react focused (yes they have others, but its mostly react), so just looking for anything else with similar style bite-sized videos that hit the nail. Posted: 27 Feb 2018 02:21 PM PST I see the phrase "front end developer" tossed around a lot but what are the core languages that make up someone who is a front end developer? I get different answers every time I google it - so i want to hear from those who are in the field. [link] [comments]
Broken grid / Overlapping Divs Posted: 27 Feb 2018 02:02 PM PST Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening everyone, Take a look at this image to get an idea of what I am going for in this post: https://imgur.com/a/1mEPU I was wondering what css, and html would allow me to overlap divs, place items on top of eachother, and deliberately violate the constraints of the parent div. I would like to avoid specifying width and height if possible so the site responds well. I am also using WordPress as a CMS. Does anyone know of any good themes and plugins that may help to achieve the look I am going for? Thanks in advance for any advice or help. [link] [comments]
Can anyone suggest a solid bootcamp(s) in the Orlando/Tampa area that doesn't start from square one? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 01:56 PM PST When I first started web development June of last year, I decided to go the self taught route to really feel out if web development was for me. I had prior experience with HTML and CSS from back in high school, but I didn't want to jump right in and attend a bootcamp in case I found out it wasn't for me. But now I for sure know this field is for me. I started out spending a good amount of time focusing on learning frontend development via Udemy and a few other places, along with all of the latest frontend technologies. Now for the past two months I've focused solely on the backend and building out applications with Node.js. My end goal is to eventually become a full stack developer. I've conquered some pretty big learning curves by myself, but I want to go way deeper, and I think by actually being in an environment that can give me instant feedback would push me a lot further and I'd progress a little faster as well. I've gotten to a point now where I'd like to be able attend a bootcamp to gain experience coding on a team, for feedback, and to also have the potential connections and internships many bootcamps offer. My worry is that I could end up in a shitty bootcamp. I don't want to attend a bootcamp that is for complete beginners and goes over the basics, but more geared towards starting with an advanced-beginner skill level. Otherwise I think it'd be a waste of money and time for me personally. Are there any Bootcamps that meet my criteria that are also in the Orlando/Tampa area that you can personally recommend? Good recommendations for an unmetered host for storing and serving static content? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 07:55 AM PST Hi everyone I am looking for an unmetered host which I will use to serve a lot of static content to my visitors. For this purpose, it should be unlimited. I kind of use it as a CDN even though it is only at 1 location (I am aware of what a CDN really is). As it will serve a lot of static content to many visitors, only unmetered hosts allow me to 1) not reach the monthly bandwith limit in a few days and 2) have reasonable costs. Thus, I wanted to ask if any or you have good experiences? In the past I used Sharktech but I am not sure if they are still good as of today. Thanks a lot! [link] [comments]
Issues in development of PHP web app on antiquated box (IBMi, DB2) Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:25 AM PST Hello! New to r/webdev and I wanted to post about my experience on developing a web app on the IBMi. TD;DR - Developing a web app on the IBMi sucks because I have to FTP all my code changes. Anyone else have a similar experience? Details: Here is a bit of history. A few years ago, I started working for a company that supports clients who have their business living on the IBMi. The box runs their day to day internal business as well as serving up their customer facing web app. The box runs Zend Server so their customer web app is written in PHP. Here's where I come in. I was hired to basically rewrite the web application from the ground up, replacing their old procedural code with something more "modern" like an MVC Framework. Issues
I've given it my best effort to alleviate some of these problems. The project is about 3 years old now and is pretty solid considering how bad the development situation has been. I'm getting worried that as the project grows bigger, the issues due to poor development practices will catch up and bite us in the ass. My question is does any have any experience developing in a similar situation and how did you manage it? [link] [comments]
Am I stuck with IBM's Rational Application Developer when working with Websphere Commerce? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 12:35 PM PST Are there other IDE's (or preferably more lightweight editors like VSCode) that I can use to manage the Websphere Servers, console logging, etc? [link] [comments]
GDPR - How to I make sure I'm compliant Posted: 27 Feb 2018 08:46 AM PST Is there a simple checklist to go through to make sure I'm GDPR compliant. So far as I can figure is I just need to let users know what I do with there information and make sure I have permission? [link] [comments]

Graduating soon, jobs applications keep getting rejected, any advice? Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:57 AM PST Hi guys! I've been doing front-end web development for a few years with several different organizations as an intern, but now that I'm looking for full-time jobs things are getting more difficult. I've applied to 20+ positions over the past month and haven't heard anything back from them except rejection emails. I imagine most of my applications aren't making it past HR, so there must be something wrong with my resume? Could it be that I'm an IT major instead of a CS major? Most of the jobs look like this one Link. I try to apply for jobs that are junior or have junior-level requirements, but I'm not getting any dice. I feel like I've got all the bases covered to do front-end web dev. From Javascript frameworks to extensive CSS experience, UI/UX experience and Git, I'm not sure what I'm missing. Here's what my resume looks like Link. Any insights on what the issue could be? Is this just not the time of year to apply? Should I be calling their recruitment department and following up on my applications? Any thoughts would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Creative ways to showcase Video? (Video Gallery?) Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:57 AM PST Hey guys, Im working on a website for a production company. I would really like to ask you if anyone has found or where I can find inspiration to create a cool video gallery of their work? Not the standard thumbnail gallery click and spotlight?
