All Steam key requests appear to be fraudulent after releasing on Steam Early Access. Posted: 08 Dec 2017 01:25 AM PST I released my game on Early Access 2 days ago. Almost immediately emails started arriving to my listed support email address. Everyone single one of the emails appears to be fraudulent. [link] [comments] |
Is the game industry as bad as I hear? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 04:32 PM PST People constantly tell me the game industry is a toxic world with crazy deadlines, long, life stealing hours, and lots and lots of stress. Is it really this bad? Should i totally avoid it? I am talking all game dev jobs but with an interest in the art side and coding side. [link] [comments] |

What belongs in a hometown in video games? Posted: 08 Dec 2017 09:12 AM PST Hi guys I'm working on a game and was wondering what you typically see and can interact with in hometowns in video games? In working on a home town map I need some more ideas to fill it in besides houses lakes and trees. The latter two you can interact with. I thought of animals like chickens dogs and cows but it makes it feel like more of a farm. I'm fine with cliches and general perceptions of things that belong. They don't have to be new. Tl;Dr - what do you think belongs or could be in a video game hometown? [link] [comments] |
Game ideas to make in one evening? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 11:10 PM PST Sometimes I come home after work and all I want to do is to make a very simple app or game, be satisfied with it and go to sleep. The problem is, all my decent projects (the ones that satisfy me) take at least a couple of months to create and polish. Of course I can make a very simple and relatively polished game, like Tetris, Snake, or match-3-like in an evening, but these mechanics don't really seem interesting to me. And inventing my own mechanics always takes at least a week, not including playtesting them. I've thought about making games focusing on one simple technical feature (e.g. a custom 3d renderer, procedurally generated something, etc), but such features are rarely interesting by themselves, they are mostly used to enhance an existing game and/or overcome a technical limitation. How can I come up with extremely small-scoped games that are not boring or overdone? I would appreciate any suggestions! P.S. To clarify, I have many years of software development experience, so the complexity of technologies, algorithms or infrastructure doesn't matter. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Dec 2017 06:33 AM PST right, so for college I've been tasked with turning a source of information (a website or a book) into a game or a playable demo for a game, but I'm stuck with choosing a website I can use. If anyone has any ideas they'd like to throw at me please go ahead. [link] [comments] |
Feedback Friday #266 - Closed Alpha Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:00 PM PST FEEDBACK FRIDAY #266 Well it's Friday here so lets play each others games, be nice and constructive and have fun! keep up with devs on twitter and get involved! Post your games/demos/builds and give each other feedback! Feedback Friday Rules: Suggestion: As a generally courtesy, you should try to check out a person's game if they have left feedback on your game. If you are leaving feedback on another person's game, it may be helpful to leave a link to your post (if you have posted your game for feedback) at the end of your comment so they can easily find your game. -Post a link to a playable version of your game or demo -Do NOT link to screenshots or videos! The emphasis of FF is on testing and feedback, not on graphics! Screenshot Saturday is the better choice for your awesome screenshots and videos! -Promote good feedback! Try to avoid posting one line responses like "I liked it!" because that is NOT feedback! -Upvote those who provide good feedback! -Comments using URL shorteners may get auto-removed by reddit, so we recommend not using them. Terrain makes my abilities dumb (2D) Posted: 08 Dec 2017 05:34 AM PST I am planning a 2D game. My chars have abilities that rise from ground such as spikes. But it is also a platformer game. When player stands next to a cliff and uses those abilities what should happen? Or when player moves on sloping land should angle of ability also rotate as angle of land? https://imgur.com/OMXqmfd [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 08:11 AM PST I am having serious troubles using Cocos2d-x. I am using Windows and Visual Studio 2017. I have downloaded the sdk, 8.1, that seemed to be failing it at the original time of download. First, VS gives the warning that everything is out of date, and if I don't bring it up to the newest tool set and SDK it shows that everything is VS2010. Does this mean I have to go back to 2010 to run a Cocos2d-x project? Next, if I bring it up to the current tool set and SDK, literally everything fails to build. I get a fatal error on it trying to load literally every single file it needs for the build. I am an idiot, and I'm just totally missing something obvious? Or does this just not work on VS2017? From graduation to building a brand Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:22 AM PST I'm a gaming and animation student, and graduation is almost upon me after 6 long years. Like many of you, I have big plans. I've learned many aspects of game development. The problem is, I'm fairly inexperienced in things such as branding, marketing, business strategy, and upkeep. I'm seeking advice, resources, or classes online for creating, and operating a business with a long term goal of owning a studio, and operating multiple IP's. Thanks. Looking forward to 2018! Want to hear from people who worked on indie first-person games Posted: 08 Dec 2017 06:41 AM PST TLDR - Id like to hear your experience from making a first person game, whether it was just you or team, how long it took and whether you had past experience. There is a group of 4 of us, all family (brothers and sisters) which massively helps when it comes to communication & idea sharing. One has experience in coding but the other two will be learning modelling from search. I come from a VFX background doing compositing and I will be doing modelling myself as well, feel quite comfortable with The idea is a medieval co-op adventure game, built off the same idea of games like Ultima Online with the feel and skill system , but of course in 3d and first person. No in-depth things like crafting, building or destruction. We are currently in the managing expectation stage, a lot of stuff we will have to learn along the way. We have set out a rough road map, estimating it will take us around 3 years to make the game in our spare time. With the end goal of just enjoying the journey and doing something creative in our spare time, we have no plans to make money from the game. I really am interested to hear about your experiences and how the process went as the TLDR suggests. This way I would be able to gauge what direction to take certain things writhing development.
