    Which technology should I invest in after the js stack ( dotnet core, java spring boot, Golang) ?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:50 AM PST

    I've been doing nodejs development for two years now and about two months ago I felt the need to explore a bit out of js box and try new languages. I learned so much in this journey, I even understood js/ts way better and I got to know many languages on a superficial level. Many of them were very cool but the ones I liked most were golang, C# and although I didn't particularly love java (imho C# is plain better) I thought the spring boot framework is pretty nefty. For the developers who worked in these technologies in depth which technology should I invest in (first) going forward that will give me a good developer experience and will be rewarding career wise.

    Programming project for college?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:48 AM PST

    I have a upcoming assignment that requires me to think of a project, build it (not necessarily well) then talk through the process that went into the project, however, I am really struggling to find a project idea any ideas would be great!

    The project doesn't need to be complex just something to show.

    Thanks in advance.

    How would one create a bot that auto-bids on something like the Steam Market?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:43 PM PST

    I have some questions

    1) is it hard?

    2) how would one go about doing it?

    3) if I were to pay someone to create such a bot, how much work would they have to invest?

    Are you making personal projects in place of internships during the pandemic?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:25 PM PST

    If you're higher ups, would you consider this good quality to hire?

    I'm currently making one of my most ambitious project, and will probably have to re-do it once it gets 10k plus users which I hope because I am still new haha and everything is messy though I do follow coding conventions as best as I could!

    What separates effective from ineffective CI?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:40 PM PST

    I've heard of very mixed experiences with CI testing; some people claim it's a crucial part of programming projects that saves a lot of resources, while others say it only slows down development. Where do the differing viewpoints come from?

    Is it the UX that can ruin it? Poorly-planned or flaky tests? Or is it just that some kinds of project naturally benefit far more than others from CI testing?

    Construction "Codes" - but for Programming?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:47 AM PST

    I was just kinda wondering about this and thought this would be a good place get the communities thoughts. In construction, there are a set of codes that your building has to follow. I don't know much about them, but stuff like haveing fire extinguishers, making electrical sockets grounded in a certain way and all that jazz. Is there any sort of standardized 'code' for programming? Something that would for example, require storing user data in a secure way, or require apps/websites to not run code that could open themselves to known vulnerabilities? Is this is a thing? Would it be a good idea, or waste or time?

    How do you learn new tech?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:39 AM PST

    Hi reddit, I want to ask questions about your personal experience in learning something new (within IT):

    1. How do you learn something new, what is your approach? How do you measure the progress?

    2. How do you choose a path for self-development (like what book to read, which technology to learn)?

    3. What's your motivation for learning new stuff (be honest)?

    4. How do you manage time to learn new stuff for yourself (technical stuff, not guitar playing), self-development?

    5. How do you start to learn, say, 10 technologies in 10 days if you need a fairly detailed preparation for the assessment or interview for example?

    Need help with logistics of the Enigma Machine

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:41 PM PST

    As a project for a class I'm programming the Enigma Machine and I'm confused about the logistics of it all.

    When you input a letter it goes through the rotors and plug board and then outputs as a different letter and then when you input that different letter (on the same settings) it should come out as your original letter. I'm just confused on how to accomplish this.

    I understand each input on the rotor is wired to another slot on the same rotor which is then connected to the next. I'm just confused on how the input is interpreted.

    If I input the letter "A", does the input start at the actual slot 0 on the rotor? Or does it just go through the starting point (the point shown for example, so if the rotor was on position 22 would A go through 22 or 0?) Similarly for all the other letters, if B was input, would it always go through 1? Or, going back to the previous example, would it go through 23?

    I'm currently attempting to make this work without a plugboard and then introduce this as a function later, but if it's a necessity for the system to work, is there a way to do it without it? I know older encryption machines just used the rotors and worked perfectly fine.

    I have a week off, no internet/computer: what pdf book do you recommend in the algorithms and data structure (or other subjects as well)?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:35 PM PST

    Hi there! I'm having a week off, with no internet access nor a computer. Only my phone.

    I've been working as a software developer for the past two years, mostly dealing with RESTful APIs on EF Core. All I learned was within my job and for my job, so I'm lacking some basic skills related to data structure and algorithms.

    I want to fix that. What books do you guys suggest on these topics? Any other subject I should touch as well?

    Thanks a lot!

    (looking for a way to digitize P&IDs (PDF diagram) how would you suggest approaching this task

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:30 AM PST

    In my line of work i deal a lot with P&IDs (Piping and instrumentation diagram created from cading softwares (AutoCAD and MicroStation) to be later generated into PDF.

    see P&ID examble https://creativeengineers.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/CEI-PID-Sample-Rev4.pdf

    I am looking for a way to digitize these P&IDs into some form of Database like by lines name (text adjacent to line are suppose to be pipe names)

    my question is there a way to try and separate lines from the diagram and some how program a code to understand the shapes?

    What would it take to stop getting new feature requests through email?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:32 PM PST

    I'm at my second dev job and, like the first one, feature requests and "small changes" come in through email. We have Jira in place, but they don't use it. Education isn't an issue, we trained them how to submit new requests. The problem is that sending requests through email works so they keep doing it. Is this just an enforcement problem at that point?

    What is the possibility of guessing the 2-factor authentication code of an Instagram account?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:12 PM PST

    tl;dr. We have the password, the code is being sent to a deleted email, no phone number connected, FBs customer service doesn't exist.

    So my friend lost her AOL email because AOL decided to delete any accounts that are inactive within only 3 months. This means, any service she signed up for using that email she can still access as long as they don't as for a code or if she doesn't need to reset her password. Now her Instagram account is connected to AOL. She also has it connected to her Facebook but not a phone number. Her Facebook has a phone number but can't be used to send the 2fa code.

    Since she knows her password, she's able to log in but Instagram is sending a code to her AOL account. Instagram is giving her about 10 minutes to input the code and from the looks of it unlimited attempts.

    If someone has an idea on how to fix this problem, please let me know. But the real question is, how many attempts can a human make vs a computer? How long will it take a computer to figure out the code and how many attempts will it take a computer?

    If you want to judge me or tell me to create a new account, sure. I already told her but she has been trying for over 6 months to get into her account and I ran out of things to help her with.

    Tools similar to Sourcetrail that successfully open encrypted files

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 10:58 AM PST

    Okay so I definitely feel I need a source browser tool to understand this large code base and see how the relationships are established across different source files of different functions and all. Sourcetrail seems like a nice tool but the thing is some of the files I'm dealing with are encrypted and opening those files in Soucetrail errors out: source file is not valid UTF-8.

    I've been checking out VSCode as well but doesn't look like it does the same job as Sourcetrail though I can view the encrypted files.

    Are there any other decent tools that I could make use of?

    Printing to the console after the whole iteration in C#

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:28 PM PST

    So I am doing this exercise where you have to insert class properties N times and printing the result in the console the N times one under another, not after every iteration. This is what I have done by now:

    using System;

    using System.Collections.Generic;

    using System.Linq;

    using System.Text;

    using System.Threading.Tasks;

    namespace FMI_PLOVDIV

    {

    public class Star

    {

    public string starName { get; set; }

    public double distanceToSun { get; set; }

    public int classification { get; set; }

    public double mass { get; set; }

    public string constellationName { get; set; }

    }

    This is the class of the "Star" in my case and this is the main iterations and saving the properties in an object:

    class Program

    {

    static void Main(string[] args)

    {

    Console.Write("Колко звезди за се въведат: ");

    var starCount = int.Parse(Console.ReadLine());

    for (var i = 0; i < starCount; i++)

    {

    Star star = new Star();

    Console.Write("Въведете име на звездата: ");

    star.starName = Console.ReadLine();

    Console.Write("Въведете растояние от Слънцето (в светлинни години): ");

    star.distanceToSun = double.Parse(Console.ReadLine());

    Console.Write("Въведете класификация на звездата (число от 1 до 9): ");

    star.classification = int.Parse(Console.ReadLine());

    Console.Write("Въведете масата на звездата (в слънчеви маси): ");

    star.mass = double.Parse(Console.ReadLine());

    Console.Write("Въведете име на съзвездие: ");

    star.constellationName = Console.ReadLine();

    Console.WriteLine();

    object[] list = new object[5];

    list[0] = star.starName + ", ";

    list[1] = star.distanceToSun + " св.г., ";

    list[2] = star.classification + ", ";

    list[3] = star.mass + " сл.м., ";

    list[4] = star.constellationName;

    Console.WriteLine();

    foreach (var item in list)

    {

    Console.Write(item);

    }

    Console.WriteLine();

    }

    }

    }

    }

    Application: Tool Warehouse - Production Company

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:04 PM PST

    Hello!

    I want to create a desktop application that will help my company supervice the milling tools. I am not looking for ready-made answers, but only for tips on what tools I should use. I am not advanced developer.

    Main assumptions are:

    1. Easy to use for a workers.
    2. Shows a list of tools - their names.
    3. Posibility to mark the taken tools from the warehouse and their current location.
    4. Ability to assign the date of the last tool movement and the person who took it.

    I hope I explained it well. If something is clear, please ask and I will try to precise better!

    Thanks in advance,

    Adrian

    Building NoSql design schema

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:47 PM PST

    Hello all,

    I'm new to Mongo, after coming from SQL (6+ years). Mongo seems very straightforward, but then when you start designing the schemas and how you're going to be pulling/updating the data, it gets tricky.

    I have this hundreds of document that gets updated frequently and I need to keep track of all of the versions (each time it gets updated). My initial thought was to create 1 document per entity, which would look like this - https://jsfiddle.net/oehk9fud/1/

    But this has some issues:

    • Updating specific versions inside the nested array is a pain.
    • Removing specific versions from the array is also a pain
    • Duplicates become an issue
    • Pulling the document with just the single version I want - can be done, but also a pain

    Then I thought that I could create a collection that stores each version as a document by using a dynamic key, e.g., "ENTITY_ONE.<version number>". This would allow for really easy reading/writing.

    I'm just so green to nosql, that I'm sure there are much better alternatives.

    I know exactly how I would build this with SQL, but I really wanted to try NoSQL as it seems like a perfect candidate.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Is it possible to wrap a .lib into a different architecture? For example, when compiling for hardware?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:22 AM PST

    Was thinking to add a wrapper class around a static library since don't have access to the source, in order to get this part of the code to compile for a specific type of hardware to run on. Haven't done anything like this before so I thought I'd ask before I got too deep.

    Edit: this is in C++ if that matters.

    Help Finding a Code Editor

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:56 AM PST

    Hello, I have just begun learning how to code. I have been using the OSX built in TextEdit and it is very difficult to work with. I'm here to look for recommendations for a text editor that is very simple (basically a notepad with some helpful organization features). I would like it to include syntax highlighting, dark mode, and an auto indent feature (so I don't need to press tab every time I get to a new line). I would like it to work with HTML, CSS, Java Script, and Python. Finally I want something that takes up very little system resources. Thank you very much.

    TL;DR can someone recommend me a very simple code editor for MacOS that has syntax highlighting, dark mode, and auto-indent that supports HTML, CSS, JS, and PY and takes up very little system resources

    [JAVA] Big fuss about return statement in for loop

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 03:00 AM PST

    So my teacher gave us this exercise where we had to check if a number was a prime number using for-loops.

    I submitted this piece of code and she was telling me how my use of the return statement in the for-loop was bad and should never be done.

    Is it really considered bad practice to return early in a for loop?

    I'm of the opinion that it makes short pieces of code even shorter and avoids having unneeded variables or nested if statements.

    public boolean isPrimeNumber() { for (int x = 2; x < number; x++) { if (number % x == 0) { return false; } } return true; }

    Problem with SignalR when deployed on Azure

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:16 AM PST

    So I deployed my web app on azure web services and it works just fine in general, but signalr seems to be not working propertly. Whenever I disconnect from any hub (for example refreshing page) OnDisconnectedAsync function is executed with delay of several seconds.

    In my hub I have 2 functions:

    public override Task OnConnectedAsync() { _logger.LogWarning("Connected"); return Clients.Caller.SendAsync("JoinRoomGroup"); } public override async Task OnDisconnectedAsync(Exception exception) { _logger.LogWarning("Disconnected"); await base.OnDisconnectedAsync(exception); }

    So if I refresh page, OnDisconnected should be executed first, then OnConnected. It works like that localy in development environment and thats fine.

    But when I do the same thing on my production environment (on azure) OnConnected is executed first then OnDisconnected about 5-10 sec later, which I see from the logs in db.

    It does that on every hub and it causes problems.

    Anyone has idea how to fix it and why it's happening?
