    Why are there so many condescending dickheads on Stackoverflow? Are there any alternatives?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:58 PM PST

    I asked a question on Stackoverflow. Within minutes I get a comment about how that individual commenter doesn't bother answering questions where the code has compiler warnings. He later insisted I put in a minimal reproducible example, which I already had, which is why he was able to copy-paste it to godbolt to see the -pedantic warnings. And then he later said my code usage was totally uneccessary... which is idiodic right (?), it's a minimal reproducible example.

    This isn't the first time. Every time I have a question, I spend like an hour creating a minimal example to get right down to the nuts and bolts. I post the compiler version, flags, the code, and I post.

    Within minutes there's always an army of people asking why I'm doing something that way, when it's completely irrelevant to the question. I had someone the other day say "the problem is you shouldn't worry about concrete types, just behaviour"... which is a completely assinine thing to say, it's irrelevant to the question and he has no idea why I'm asking it. The why I'm having a problem doesn't help solve a minimal reproducible example.

    It just seems like these guys don't know the answer, so they assume that I'm asking for wrong reasons. I hate them so much.

    I answer questions here and there on Stackoverflow, but I never really get a chance because there's an army of these dickheads who answer everything as quickly as possible for their gold internet stars. And anything that's harder to answer, a few times, I have researched to try and help the questioner but they get shit all over so hard by these people that they delete their questions.

    Is there a better place than Stackoverflow? It's so toxic there.

    How do i cheer up / build confidence in a depressed interviewee (i am the interviewer)?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:28 AM PST

    So, I came across a candidate who lost his job few months back due to Covid. Also, the family is facing an acute financially crunch. The candidate seemed to be very nervous, depressed and very tensed.

    I wish he gets some job quickly, but I can't hire him merely out of sympathy. Also, I don't want to loose him either, should he be deserving.

    How do I make him feel comfortable, relaxed and confident while in the interview, so that he can be the best version of himself? Whether he's selected or not, I want him to be better than what he is right now.

    Any suggestions / tricks that you guys use to cheer up such candidates will be helpful.

    Thanks!

    Are there any books I can read while starting a computer science major to help me build foundational understanding/skills?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:12 PM PST

    I'm in my very very first class and struggling. The pace feels quick, or I feel slow maybe.

    Part of my issue is it's all online, and I work four days a week, midday to midnight. I don't get much time to do homework when I'm home during the day due to taking care of family, although I do my best.

    But I feel like I'm not grasping something about the basics. I get that the syntax is highly specific, I get that the normal definitions of a word won't necessarily match the usage in a language, all that. I can't vocalize what it is that I'm missing but it's like, I take all the notes I can, I refer to them when doing work, and it's a crapshoot of if I'll have a lightbulb right away or if I feel totally lost.

    I'm looking for anything I can study while at work, on kindle. I'd use my school book but it's a ZyBook and I can't carry my laptop around.

    Also, does anyone have any note taking tips? I am really trying to refine my note strategies as well.

    Any general advice is amazing as well!

    Thank you!!!

    just curious, anyone tried sipping on lean and programming

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:30 PM PST

    Hi, so legitimate curiosity based question here - what do you think would happen if someone sips on lean and programs? I know everyone is different, but in general. Also, if anyone here has done it before, experiences would be great! Would it be like how rappers sip on lean sometimes for a little bit of creativity?

    Writing a value with a variable bit size

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:25 AM PST

    I have a specification that has different types mapped to specifically sized bit fields, like in some cases I'll have a 5 bit integer (with a max value of 31). We have the utilities to read these values, but I have no clue how to write them.

    We are using Java, but any example of how to overcome this problem (or actually some domain keywords to help me make my search better) would be awesome.

    Optimization algorithm for shaving peaks off of power demand

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:48 PM PST

    I honestly have no idea how to implement this function into code, preferably Julia. This flowchart should help too.

    I'm wondering how could I implement the dataset as a variable within the integral. I have the dataset for the demands I'm trying to shave, which is shown as L(t) in the function. The constant C doesn't really matter as I'm trying to first figure out how I would even start this.

    Here is the paper I got the algorithm from if you want to know more about it: https://www.sandia.gov/ess-ssl/EESAT/2013_papers/Peak_Shaving_Control_Method_for_Energy_Storage.pdf

    Any help is appreciate greatly. Thank you!

    Trying to find an efficient way to sort based on certain criteria.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:56 AM PST

    To begin, I am not a programmer (aspiring, maybe), but I have an issue I think could be solved with a little learning on my part. Apologies if this kind of post isn't welcome.

    I work for a nonprofit that serves students and teachers. We raise money from multiple sources to cover expenses in the form of scholarships so that it is free to participants. The funders we utilize specify certain criteria for their scholarships (only students from certain towns, or only teachers in certain subject areas). If we can't meet those criteria we don't get the funding. Currently the process of assigning these scholarships is a big ol' spreadsheet and hours of shuffling things around. Sometimes there are situations where a student doesn't meet any criteria, and sometimes they could qualify for several scholarships, depending on what criteria is chosen. I'm hoping there's a way to automate the sorting of data points in the participant "bucket" into scholarship buckets based on a list of matching criteria, and to do so as efficiently as possible (leaving as few students without assigned scholarships as possible) so that we can reduce the amount of time and effort spent editing by hand.

    I'm happy to find my own resources for learning, but wondering if anyone has any advice on where to start.

    Thanks for any help!

    NodeJS Deadlock Issue Updating MySQL table hourly

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:09 AM PST

    I have a Node JS application that has to update every row in our MySQL database every hour. We are getting to around 250k rows which is causing the hourly query to take over 20 seconds, which in turn deadlocks all queries in that time. How can we either split this query up or prevent the dead locking issue so we can continue updating every row without losing queries? Thank you and sorry if that made zero sense!

    When signing up for things, there is usually an option to sign in with Facebook and Google. I was wondering how that works, and if I would be able to use someone's account information from a different app to create an account on mine.

    What technologies should I use?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:53 PM PST

    Hey guys,

    Recently I was asked to participate in an interesting project. Together with few colleagues of mine, we discovered a certain market niche in my country - software for small veterinary clinics. As a software developer, I want to create a web app that would fill this niche. I wanted to ask you what technologies would you recommend using. I have a technical background - I am a CS graduate and I work for 2,5 years as a software developer - mainly JS but I know Python and Java.

    I'm planning to use HTML, CSS and JS to create an application to write to a website.

    How would I program it so that a text entered in to a field is wrapped and sent to a website? For example, I would be able to send a search request to google through my application.

    Potential career choice

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:26 PM PST

    I'm a 15 year old kid in high school and I've always been interested in programming but always thought it would be impossible to learn. I'm now currently in a grade 10 computer science and I'm having a lot of fun, it is challenging sometimes but for the most part it's a fun cool class and I think I want to go into programming for school. So now I'm just looking for I guess a professional or educated opinion on wether or not it is doable for me and by that I mean like will I be able to learn it? To give a bit of info I'm not a genius at programming or in general but I am doing pretty good and even when I'm not completely successful, I have a lot of fun trying to figure out where I went wrong and trying to solve the problem. So ya, I just want to know if it's something u (anyone who reads this) think I can learn. Btw I am absolutely ready to put the work in to get good at this, I'm not u know giving up or anything just trying to get a sense of what it's gonna look like. Thanks a lot if u read this it means a lot! O also in the class we are working with python that's currently the only one I "know". However, I am doing a khan academy class on my own time working with JavaScript and I am also having a lot of fun with that! Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to read this

    [Question] How to kill process within python script on my Raspberry Pi 4?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:37 AM PST

    Hey.

    I have problems with a DHT22 sensor. Whenever i run my program for the first time after starting the Raspi it works perfectly fine, when i stop the program and want to rerun it I get the error "Unable to set line 24 to input".

    I can manually kill the task that is causing that error (libgpiod_pulsein) via terminal or the taskmanager but that doesnt help me. I would really love to have a few lines of code in my script that does that automatically when i rerun it. First kill that task if its running, then setup my GPIO and read the values.

    Is that possible? I'm looking for an answer for 2 days now and I don't find anything.

    AFAIK I have all the latest versions installed. (adafruit_circuitpython, libgpiod, etc.)

    My code looks like this:

    import RPi.GPIO as GPIO

    import adafruit_dht

    import time

    GPIO.setwarnings(False)

    GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BCM)

    GPIO.setup(24, GPIO.IN, pull_up_down = GPIO.PUD_UP)

    dht_device = adafruit_dht.DHT22(24)

    while 1:

    try:

    temperature = dht_device.temperature

    humidity = dht_device.humidity

    print("Temp: {:.1f} *C \t Humidity: {}%".format(temperature, humidity))

    time.sleep(2)

    except RuntimeError as e:

    print("Reading from DHT failure: ", e.args)

    Please list out the advantages and disadvantages of using the listed website(s) over the others (like being open-source, free, secure, and the like), if possible.

    Is registering for an account optional, or required (whether that is for premium stuff, or just generally)?

    In my assignment, I changed a Java method name to follow the conventions. Do I need to justify or explain this in my code, or to my lecturer?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 06:06 AM PST

    Assignment here.

    Now, it was pointed out to me that Java methods containing multiple words should start with a lowercase letter followed by an uppercase letter, so I should use changeState not change_state.

    So considering I changed the name from the assignment, should I email my lecturer or the module co-ordinator to explain why I did this, include a comment in the code, or just hand it in and say nothing? What is the protocol in this situation? TIA.

    Linter to use with gcc

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:57 AM PST

    I'm working on a psoc creator project for school. It's a Windows IDE used for programming psoc microcontrollers that you program mainly with C (I dual booted windows specifically for this). It uses the GCC compiler.

    It's not particularly helping me with formatting my code. I often have to track back and fix indentations, add spaces and such. I'm trying to find a C linting tool, but what I find is mostly written for the clang compiler.

    Is there a standalone C Linter available, just like ktlint for kotlin, that I can use to format my code, or use to check for formatting errors in my pre-commit hook?

    [Help] How to create a httpclient request that ask for local ip and public ip as well?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:03 AM PST

    I'm using Angular for this project, however I think the question is more general than a specific framework. General enough not to be asked in stackOverflow.

    So, I have a server machine right here next to me. It is a local server that is also set to be used over the internet (by public ip + open port). For this reason, locally, I can't use the public IP to connect to the server. So I need to use the local IP in the project. But I need also to use this webapp outside of the local network, that's why I have set the server to be accesible over the internet. Where is the problem? This is the logic at the moment:

    SCENARIO 1: I want to connect locally to the machine, so I set the app with the local IP

    -> It works, but won't work over internet because it would as the local ip of each user.

    SCENARIO 2: I want to connect over internet to the machine, so I set the app with the public IP->It works everywhere except locally, because for some reason, I can't reach local ip's over internet.

    In my project I'm using the following:

    login(user: UserI): Observable<JwtResponseI>{

    return this.httpClient.post<JwtResponseI>('http://LOCALIP/users/login', user).pipe(tap(

    (res:JwtResponseI)=>{

    if(res){console.log(res);

    }},

    error1 =>{

    return this.httpClient.post<JwtResponseI>

    ('this.NET_SERVER/users/login',user).pipe(tap(

    (res:JwtResponseI)=>{

    if(res){console.log(res);

    }},

    error2 =>{

    console.log("Local "+error1);

    console.log("Net " +error2);

    },

    ));

    }));

    }

    I have set the public IP httpclient connection inside the error of the local IP connection, so If one fails, the other tries. This presents two problems as my knowledge can understand:

    - The obvious one: The one inside the error seems not to occur. The code doesn't get there for some reason.

    - The waiting time: In order to error, the first one takes some time. If this is the case every time data needs to be retrieved from the database, It can take extremely long.

    I wonder if there is something to make the connection understand whenever it is in local or public and connect accordingly, After all I'm trying to connect both locally and publicly with no major issues.

    Please throw your tip or knowledge about this issue, anything will be appreciated.
