Bonus question: What is your most watched movie?

I'm a CS major, and I absolutely love my Game Programming class, but the idea of working in this field scares the shit out of me.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:28 AM PDT

I'm in college right now, and I think I want to pursue game dev. I'm a CS junior , and I have no intention of changing that. From what I understand CS degrees are more versatile and are just as good as a game dev degree, so I'm not gonna take away that safety from myself.

However, I really do want to pursue this field further. Don't get me wrong I enjoy my main CS classes but I cannot ignore the fact that my game programming class is the first one that I not only look forward to, but do extra work in my free time. It's just so much more enjoyable then studying data structures, system level programming or whatever other CS classes I have. Perhaps i'm misguided but I even enjoy coding more in game dev, especially now that I can see the tangible result.

With that said I do have some concerns that I'm hoping to get some answers/clarification on, because it's honestly not something I had thought I'd enjoy as much as I do.

    1. I heard that this is a careerpath that doesn't pay as well, and requires more hours. Is it really that bad? Is it only less when compared to software engineers and other cs jobs or is it just generally pretty bad?
    2. Is it possible for me to get a job out of college, or is this more of a hobby until you get a bunch of experience?
    3. Probably my biggest concern right now is that even though I liked this programming class, I disliked my Game Design class. It had no technical work and was purely creative, and studying games rather than making them. Is this something I should be concerned about or is game design and game dev different fields?
    4. What can I do right now to work towards getting into this field?

Edit: Thank y'all so much for the responses, I expected my responses to be a bit condescending but y'all have been so friendly and the responses so far they have been great.

Unreal Engine Tutorial - How to create console commands in blueprints

I've started making a game. Are my goals unrealistic?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 05:57 AM PDT

I know the common wisdom here is that you should try to make the smallest game you can possibly make, but I've found that when I tried that in the past I've quickly lost enthusiasm because the end goal is something I don't care about. The farthest I've ever come with a game was when I tried making my own 3D puzzle game without any single project or tutorial to guide me. I'd love to come back to that project, but sadly I don't know what happened to it.

So instead of making a "small game" I don't care about I've decided I'd rather make the smallest possible working version of a game I actually want to make.Recently I felt inspired by Breath of the Wild. I know a project of that scope is literally impossible for one beginner, but I've set out a few goals in as minute detail as I could think of for now, and broke it down by how long I think it would take to get the most basic version of a game where you can run around and jump in a world, pick up a sword, and attack with it. I've set myself the target to have all these systems working in some capacity by the end of the year. Are my goals unrealistic?

What games have an in-universe rationale for a double jump mechanic?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:14 AM PDT

I am looking for inspiration to develop a moveset. If possible, I'd like some sort of explanation, even if implausible or impossible, why the player character can do a double jump. I am looking for older (or newer) games which have some sort of rationale for their double jump, for inspiration.

My ideas are for a 2D game, but this question can apply to 2D or 3D alike.

For example, Genji and Hanzo in Overwatch seem to be able to do a double jump for no reason. They get to defy physics, but inexplicably, no other characters can.

However, in Banjo-Kazooie, the double jump is explained by the bird popping out and flapping her wings. Can a bird really lift the weight of a bear? No. But I appreciate the attempt at an in-universe explanation.

    Thanks!

I Need Help About Making Character Voices

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 12:37 PM PDT

Hello, I want to make animated series but I don't know how to solve voice problem. I thought I could make gibberish character voices like Animal Crossing voices but I am not sure. Because I should make animated series that others might want to watch. I also don't want voices to sound like robots. If anyone could give me some advice, that will be awesome.

Best way to improve game loading times?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 12:18 PM PDT

Hey, I'm working on a game and it does not have enormous loading times but I'm a 'complete' beginner and probably haven't used every performance/loading optimization out there.

What is the best way to reduce loading times? Or - in other words: What causes the loading time to increase rapidly? Many images? Many "perform always" events? etc.
    Thank you for answers ;p

    Java game creation help

Hey guys, I'm a fairly novice level programmer with the intent to make video games. Right now I'm trying to find a good source for learning these more specific skills. Are there any particular books or anything you would recommend? I saw several on Amazon that looked decent, but I would like some insight/recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Floats, physics, and the conservation of energy. Anything to be concerned about here?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:51 AM PDT

Question to those who are familiar with:

    1. Some physics, and
    2. The issues that exist with floating point numbers.

I was considering implementing the basic controls of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hbk93KZy_9w

The controls are physics based and follow a constrained two body system. The player applies force to a hammer, pushing the players self back, within the bounds of some spring-like constraint.

I imagine the constraint based system to simply reposition the hammer/player when too far out of bounds, and make sure to account for any existing / leftover momentum/kinetic energy.

I start getting sweaty thinking about this, as at each timestep, one would be adding up / subtracting miniscule values while throwing them into complex (and possibly black-box) physics equations. This sounds like one of those things you need to start correct from the beginning if you're going to avoid weird floating point fuckery. Will I get 100 hours into working and then find out my physics code fundamentally can not handle a new feature I wanna throw at it?? Yikes!

So... Does anyone have any experience here? Are my concerns warranted, or does this actually not turn out to be a big deal?
