Where do spammers find out about newly registered domains? Posted: 27 Oct 2020 06:48 AM PDT Years ago while I was still dumb enough not to get WHOIS protection, I'd always get spammed real fast after registering a domain. How did those spammers become aware of the new domain? Is there some type of feed somewhere? [link] [comments]
Stop lowering your fee for no good reason! Posted: 27 Oct 2020 02:46 PM PDT A friend of mine new to freelancing asked me what to do when a client comes back and says you're too expensive, the dreaded, "Is there anything we can do to lower the quote?" He was about to lower the quote for no reason, just to capture the business. PLEASE STOP DOING THAT. Why?
This all assumes, of course, that your rate is viable (that is, you're actually winning projects at fees for similarly-sized projects), and that the client isn't asking you to change the requirements in order to lower the cost; that would be a legitimate reason to work with them on adjusting your fee. (Custom) web development is not a commodity. Custom web development is not yard sale. Stop negotiating against yourself. /rant [link] [comments]
"Web Dev path" or "Fullstack path"? Wait, what? Posted: 27 Oct 2020 03:02 PM PDT OK guys, so! I was scrolling and someone asked "should I choose a Web dev path or a Full Stack path" which actually doesn't make sense at all to me since I thought Web Development was a global view for Web programming which includes Front End, Back end and Dev Ops. So Web Dev would be Full-stack + Dev Ops, or am I completely wrong? Can some of you clarify what "Web Dev" means, please? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Oct 2020 09:08 AM PDT Even though I've only been learning for a month now I've seen a lot of post about jobs and freelancing.I have been one of those people but first off this isn't a thing we should be worried about we should be worried about getting the fundamentals down. Obviously money is very important and a great motivator but skills/ fundamentals are also very important which leads me to another thing. There is obviously a lot of competition in web development and a lot of other fields but what sets you apart is work ethic and quality of work. Most importantly marketing yourself! A lot of people may be able to do what you can do but not a lot of people can be versatile in the sense of being a team player and being able to step into that leader role if need be.The work place is like a sports team if everyone isn't doing there role whether it's doing to much or doing to less your are going to lose! if you're interested in the freelance path; ask yourself would you hire you ? Learning is half the battle you can be the most amazing web developer in the world but if you can't sell your self to business or employers you'll be hard pressed to find solid work. Selling your self is key! When someone ask you "why should I go with you over Bob? Bob does decent work for half of your price."You have to be ready with the answer!Marketability+quality you'll kill the game! So be patient take your time learning make sure you understand each concept that your able to explain it to a middle schooler. It'll be worth it in the long term and this is applicable to anything. There is definitely money to be made. The more seasoned web developers, I'd love to hear your opinions on my thoughts! [link] [comments]

How do you keep up and learn the latest trends in development? Posted: 26 Oct 2020 11:14 PM PDT Hello guys, I hope my post doesn't get disapproved. I wanted to understand from the senior developers in the community how do you guys keep track, stay updated about the latest in web development? How do you find the time - does your job allow researching and trying out new things? Or do you tinker on personal projects at home? The thing is I'm not a developer myself. A team lead in different department. I constantly feel my dev team is often not keep up to date with the latest industry trends. Not blaming them. They probably just can't find enough time at work to learn, practice, try out the new stuff. So i am hoping if some of the senior ones here could help me understand if this is something good developers learn while working for their firm or must they practice in their free time to improve their craft. I really don't know how it is done outside of my firm. I would love for my team to grow their knowledge but I also do not want to burden them to learn/practice more coding once home after work. Is improving their knowledgebase something they should do of their own will or is the firm's responsibilty? I also understand that not every developer is passionate about coding. For a lot of people, it's just their job and if they have just enough knowledge to make it work, they are not motivated to learn anything new. I don't think I can change that really. I look forward to your advice and wisdom to guide me help improve my team. [link] [comments]
What to do when you dont know what to do? Posted: 27 Oct 2020 06:39 AM PDT Hello everyone, hope you are doing well. So I am a self-taught web developer who at the moment has some free time and doesnt want to waste it on watching youtube and netflix all day. The problem is , that I (considering myself junior) , even though I know that there are loads of shit that I just dont know, but I feel like I could only achieve those certain things, by working or doing an internship( doing these bigger things by myself is a nono I believe). This is because I just feel like that I guess. I have done a couple of big 1+ month projects in the past(big for me obv) and I just dont know what I could make that would surpass those projects with the things I am able to learn on my own. I believe that now I could only drastically improve by working in IT. So the question is , I want to learn programming but I just dont know what to do, since the most fun for me is to actually build projects and learn this way, but as I said, I dont know how could I surpass my previous projects and learn a ton from this new project. Any suggestions what I could do? Maybe just do some javascript tasks( my main stack is js)? I just want to do something meaningful in the mean time that im searching for an internship/job . :) thank you ! [link] [comments]

Why would someone want to pay me to use my upwork account? Posted: 27 Oct 2020 06:59 AM PDT Got a message from someone in japan wanting to pay me 200$ a month to use my upwork account. Any ideas why someone would want to do that? I have a 5 star rating but only 3 completed gigs so far. [link] [comments]
Coding bootcamp went from in-person to remote due to COVID... Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:46 PM PDT Hello, I attended an in-person bootcamp in San Francisco in March. 2 weeks into the program, the school switched to all remote learning due to Covid. Obviously there was no way around this for the school. However, when deciding on doing this bootcamp I specifically chose it for the in person learning and only signed up with the expectation that I would be learning in a classroom. I even moved cross-country in order to attend this bootcamp in person. If I had wanted to do it remotely, I had other options which were SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the in person one. I had reasoned with myself that in-person learning was worth the pay increase for me. Do you think it's reasonable to ask the bootcamp for some sort of payment reduction? If so, how do you think I should go about it? My gut tells me that it doesn't hurt to at least try. [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Oct 2020 07:23 AM PDT (feel free to remove this if it belongs into the monthly getting started thread) Hello I'm an artist and am thinking of building a website to publicly showcase and archive my work. I did some reading about the different options and am currently leaning to starting out with something like WordPress etc since I think basic features should be sufficient for what I want to do. But it's hard for me to judge what limitations WP has. What I want my site to do: Basic blog functionalities Hosting hundreds of hd images different galleries for art series / categories Tagging and search / sorting system -->like a booru (example tags: medium, date, number, category etc) Option to add my own comments as well as user comments / ratings Arguments for building from scratch: I worked for a year in software development (beginner level) coding in C# and java so I have some experience with coding and self teaching I don't have a regular job so time is no issue as long as it's worth it Cons: Absolutely no experience in web development Probably way more effort & complexity? Edit: Thanks for all the answers! I'll read up on your suggestions and then decide what I'll use. [link] [comments]
Is it reasonable to require SSH access to the deployment server as a web developer? Posted: 27 Oct 2020 08:59 AM PDT I am starting out on commercial/free lance web development and I'm currently developing a rather complex website for a school. I am the only person in my "team", so I do front-end, back-end, testing, deployment + everything else. Of course the development is happening on my own private server and not on the live one. The thing is, this website is WAY more than just a couple html files, and sometimes while developing, I need to do sysadmin things like tweaking php config files, restarting certain services, installing new php modules, etc... and to do this, I need SSH access and even a sudo-level user on the target server so I can easily deploy all the new features once I'm done developing them. Up until now, the 'deployment' server was actually my own testing server (still separate from the development server) because the entire project itself was still technically in 'testing/bugfixing' stage, and I had no problem with updating it. But now that most of the major problems and bugs seem to be ironed out, the school invested in an actual server machine so my website can be moved there. The problem is that I've gotten into an argument with the current network administrator of the school I'm developing this website for, because he's only willing to give me basic FTP access to the server and he's not even willing to talk about SSH. He expects me to email him about every change I want to make to the server which just simply doesn't work for me. Here's an quick actual real life example for why: A couple weeks ago someone contacted me about a bug that needed to be fixed ASAP. I looked at it, I knew exactly what the cause was, and all I had to do is to go into the php.ini, change a setting and restart the apache. The problem was fixed within 10 minutes of it being reported and no productivity or time was lost. Now, if I only had FTP access to the server and I had to email the admin and wait for his approval, this whole thing probably would have taken several work days, maybe even up to a week (he is a contractor working in many other schools/companies so he's always busy), and that's obviously pointless and stupid because I can fix the problems myself. Also, let's not even go down the deep and dark rabbit hole of the security concerns with FTP (which cannot be encrypted) versus a nice and safe SFTP connection. A smarter kid in the school with a laptop in his backpack could probably sniff out the website's source code as an update is being deployed over FTP and then do all kinds of fun stuff with it. I know I'm being paranoid, but when it comes to network security, it is best to think about the wort case scenario. It's also important to point out that I'm not just a random developer that this school happened to hire. The school's administration (except the network admin ofc) know me personally and I have a very good relationship with them. For example, when there's something wrong with the network, they call me first to see if I can fix it before having to call the network admin. So they have no problem with me having full (or even root-level) access to the webserver, therefore this is not a question of trust/security from the client. Am I the one being unreasonable about requiring SSH access to the deployment server in order to maintain and update the website, or is the network admin being a stubborn dumbass? I think this guy's trying to scam me Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:42 PM PDT Hey all, I got laid off at my last development job and I've been trying to get some freelance work as a web developer. I applied to a contract gig on indeed and after the initial email correspondence, talking about requirements and what-not, I got a really sketchy response. I just googled some and read about payment reversal scams following the same pattern, where the guy sends a payment larger than he initially talked about and I send to some third party. I'm 95% sure at this point it's a scam but has any of you seasoned freelancers run into this sort of thing? Email goes like this: Thanks for your response, I am okay with the estimate everything sound good and i'm ready to make payment now with my credit card, I understand the content for this site would be needed so work can start asap but i will need a Little favor from you and the favor is that I will send you my credit card to charge for the sum of $6,200.00 plus 3% Cc company charges, You will deduct $2,000.00 as initial deposit for the design of the website plus extra $100.00 as a tip for handling perfect work for me and you will send the remaining $4,100.00 to the project consultant that has the text content and the logo for my website so once he receives the $4,100.00 the text content and logo needed for my website would be forwarded it to us, so work can start asap Sending of funds would be after money clears into your account and You will be charging my card for remaining balance upon completion of work, If you dont mind me asking which other CC processing merchant do you work with as regards cc payment, I don't feel comfortable using merchants like Wave, Zelle, PayPal, Venmo or Square, I've had issues with them in the past for double charging and late remittance. Any other processors apart from the prior mentioned would work (if you wish to open new merchant, i would recommend Quickbooks by Intuit and CloverGo by Bank Of America NB: They are rated highly for safety and security) Kindly get back to me so we can proceed with payment asap. Yeah, ok.. -___- [link] [comments]
Hello! What kind of languages can I use to run logic in a users browser (Other than JavaScript) Posted: 27 Oct 2020 08:35 AM PDT I'm looking to add tools to my website (think of post text/numbers, my "algorithm" reads it, return output) I believe I can do this in JavaScript, and the browser would deal with the calculations. Right? If so, efficiency may be of importance. I know native JS isn't the best... But I don't know if I can even use alternatives. Libs? Or even could I run a script in C++? This is new to me! Thanks! Edit: I'll keep it simple and go with JavaScript. Thanks greatly for all the help! [link] [comments]
How do I style my navbar based on grid breakpoints in material-ui grid react js Posted: 27 Oct 2020 03:58 PM PDT I'm learning about material-ui's grid system in react js and I'm trying to apply it to my navbar. How can I set the styles to change based on the viewport size. I can set the properties but I can't figure out how to change them based on the breakpoint. They stay constant in all screen sizes. I'd like the navbar to move from the side of the window to the top on small screens. I can use a custom hook to keep track of viewport size, but if it's doable through a built in function, I'd like to be able to use that. I've watched several tutorials and read through the documentation but no one seems to be addressing this issue. My css/sass file is currently blank [link] [comments]
Web automation with python vs js Posted: 27 Oct 2020 03:53 PM PDT I know that selenium is a famous option for web automation, and there are at least couple other robust web automation libraries. how is https://webdriver.io/ comparable to python based automation? Is there an in-depth guide to web automation in general? ( I assume it's similar to scraping but I could be completely wrong ). [link] [comments]
Help: Easy way to return request headers in response body Posted: 27 Oct 2020 03:52 PM PDT Hi all, I'm looking for an easy way to have my web server essentially echo back incoming request headers in the response body. I know about httpbin however I am using a Windows server. And while I can change to linux, that might take me longer as I'm not a linux expert. If this is not as easy as I would imagine, I am happy to compensate for time. Context: This is an assignment but I am allowed to use the internet as resource. The goal here is not to judge my development ability so this is not cheating. Research: I've looked pretty much everywhere and have not found, nor been able to piece together, a simple way to do this. There was a guide on using nginx and php but was beyond me. Free Portfolio Reviews For New Developers Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:44 AM PDT Hey everyone, I'm a web developer with 5 years of experience contracting, working at my own companies, and doing internships during my Computer Science Program at University. I've also managed to get interviews/offers from some bigger companies like Amazon, Shopify & Palantir. I'm offering free portfolio reviews for new developers over YouTube. The only requirements are:
If you want your portfolio reviewed, send it in to [dariansampare@gmail.com](mailto:dariansampare@gmail.com). I'm doing these on a first come first serve basis. If you want an idea of what to expect, the first one I did is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kweGv1Em_FE&t=3s A couple of people from the first post I made in /learnprogramming were asking about resume reviews too so I'd be open to doing those as well if enough people send those in. Looking forward to seeing the portfolios! PS. If this is against the rules, feel free to remove it. I checked the forum rules and it seems like it checks out as I'm not selling/promoting anything. What elements of server management can I NOT do in Plesk? Posted: 27 Oct 2020 09:32 AM PDT I run a handful of sites on VPS at Digital Ocean using Moss as a virtual sysadmin. (If you don't know it, Moss is comparable to Server Pilot or Run Cloud. And, Moss is also going out of business, which is why I need to switch.) I'm thinking of replacing Moss with Plesk, but I want to make sure I'm not overestimating what I can do in Plesk. Specifically, I want to know if I can manage the server--including security updates and the like--within Plesk alone. Or if there are elements of server management that cannot be done with Plesk. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]
