How To Become a Game Finisher, (And a more in depth look at Game Beginners)

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 11:40 PM PDT

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9wztsnmEIw

In this video, which is by esteemed game developer Krystian Majewski, Kystian talks about his struggle to finally finish his Pico-8 game "Pork Like" and of one the themes is about how we're all game beginners. He then asks, "Why are there no game finishers out there?". He makes it clear he believes there are no game finishers (People who gravitate naturally to finish games, but away from beginning them). I think I may have came up with my solution on how to become a game finisher.

In Derek Yu's book, articles, and interviews he says that he treats finishing games as a skill. Just as much as programming or ect. (Derek Yu made Spelunky). But how exactly do we max out the finishing games skill?

Although Chris Zukowski's article talks about finishing your first game, it also can still help us finish our games after making many of them. One thing I suggest from it is to take simple games and let them grow out from what's fun. Have an idea for one mechanic or idea and the let it grow out. Plant a few seeds and let your plant grow, whether it's a plentiful squash plant or a pretty flower to look at. Let the plant grow where it is fun and trim off not fun things, other wise the plant will produce less fruit or flowers (Followers/Money).

And finally, although many know her not by name but by profession. The idea fairy is what kills games more than any thing. When you start a project you want nothing more than to work on it, but during the hard middle part a dark entity disguised as a fairy offers relief. The idea fairy gives you ideas for new games to make. And it can be tempting to give up your current project to pursue these game ideas. But these ideas lead to the same thing. Which can start a cycle that becomes harder and harder to break out of. Don't listen to the idea fairy, she will only ever lead you into the abyss. And it becomes easier not to listen to her as you ignore the idea fairy over and over again, leading into our conclusion:

So in conclusion the way to become a game finisher is to simply finish games! The only way to get better at finishing games is to finish games! And although none of us will ever be game finishers (With out significant neurological altering) we can become as close as we can possibly be by finishing our games that we start!

    Hey everyone!

I've created sci-fi weapons for use in your game. They're brightly colored, however you can adjust the colors to fit your style by modifying the materials. This package (also public domain) includes sounds for use with the weapons.

Let me know in the comments if you have requests or feedback!

I released my first video game yesterday, and wrote a sort of postmortem about the game and how anyone can make games. I don't know a single line of code as it was all done with visual scripting. Hope this inspires anyone who wants to make games, because you totally can. do it!

Server hosting a multiplayer game on a local network

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:24 AM PDT

Hi everyone I've looked around on the internet for a tutorial/answer to my question but I haven't been able to find anything so I decided to post it on reddit.

Hopefully this post will help people with the same problem as me to find a solution, too.

So my situation is: I'm thinking of buying a Raspberry Pi to act as a server to do all sorts of stuff in my local network, like a welcoming website for guests at my house, etc. (basically things with no practical use but I like to do them for fun). I realized hosting the website was kind of easy to do and I made a simple one in like 2 hours but then I thought:

What if there was a virtual house, that guests could join when they connect to my network, hosted by my Raspberry Pi? I never developed a game before except for scratch games, so I didn't know what do to. Basically the idea is a simple multiplayer game, that is hosted by my server, that a person connected to my network could play - (it doesn't have to be elaborate at all, I would already be happy if every user was just a ball moving around in the screen)

The problem is not making the game itself, there are trillions of tutorials out there, the problem is making it multiplayer and linking it to my server.

Reddit is a very helpful community and has never let me down before, so if you please know any ways to achieve what I just described (I know it's possible) plz answer in the comments

(bonus points if the game can be made using scratch)

How do I not abandon a project after I think of a more interesting idea?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 03:16 PM PDT

Hello, so, I have this very weird habbit of abandoning projects in 2-3 weeks of developement. It's not that I need to re-write the code, or that there's a game breaking bug, no, that's not it.

The games I make actually look promising, and I really enjoy looking at my progress, but I just lose motivation because I find a more of an interesting idea to work on.

I do not like this, since after I stop working on a project, I do not return to it, which is just not good practice.

The scheme continues, and so far I haven't even had finished one project, but I have (in my opinion) programming skills that will suffice to complete the project.

This behavior has lead to overall a huge loss of performance since I feel demotivated that I just don't finish anything that I start.

Do you have any ideas on how to avoid this?

Any good guides for animated tiles. Especially water.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:02 AM PDT

    Hey there!

I am struggling with finding some guides/ressources for my project.

How do i do animated tiles (especially water) in Godot or Unity (both 2D). I've got a bunch of different programes like Procreate, Affinity Designer & Photo, Aseprite and Pixaki for making animations and Tilesetter for making tilesets.

Does any1 have a guide lying around to help me figure out a good workflow for creating water tiles?

I'd prefer using tilesetter for creating my tileset.

    Thanks a lot!

Issues with Unity’s tilemap system having discolored vertical lines.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 11:41 AM PDT

I am having a problems with white vertical tearing in my tilemaps and it seems like a lot of people are having the same issue. I have added a pixel perfect script onto my main camera that rounds to the nearest pixel which fixed warping and tearing of my tiles. This made me think "ok, now that I've tested and fixed those problems I can move on to my tilemaps." . Anyway when I had, it looked perfect "No tearing!" But when I looked at the other resolution ratios (4:3, 5:4, 16:9, and 16:10) the tearing was back and a pixel snap material seemed to make it worse. So... if anyone has had the same problem, post a solution here for me and others who have this issue.

What should I pursue/study if I want to build a career more in the design/business/marketing part of the industry?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 07:50 AM PDT

So I am using a pseudo throwaway for "reasons" but I have recently decided to explore opportunities to study something I am passionate about instead of playing it safe again. I am going to graduate soon with a BA in Econ and am planning to jump straight into a masters program. I am not inclined to study economics further but I am looking at either an MBA or doing a degree in Game Design. I am wondering if there are any people here who are in the business part of the industry who can tell me how they got there and what they studied or any people who have done game design degrees who can vouch for a college. I am open to recommendations for any colleges or programs across the world. This would be kind of a big decision so any input is appreciated

Edit: My programming skills and other creative aspects are almost as good as null but I am willing to learn if it helps my chances!

    Good beginner language/engine?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:35 AM PDT

So me and my friend want to start coding because we both love the idea of building a game. The problem is that we have no idea where to begin. We have next to no experience in coding except. We both watch game dev videos so that may be some experience. We have been looking on the internet for a good beginner game engine and a lot of people suggest unity. So we downloaded it and it was way to much to take in. We do not know where to start when booting up unity, it just does not make sense to us at all. Maybe some of you have ideas or suggestions? thanks in advance. (english is not my motherlanguage)

    Aspiring Game Programmer/Designer/Developer

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 09:51 AM PDT

My college provides two different Computer Science degrees. The regular one and what they call the "Game Option", which is all of the classes I would take to complete a bachelor's in cs but with extra courses relating to game development. I'm currently enrolled in the game option, but recently I've been wondering if it's necessary. My question is whether or not devoting my time to the extended hours would be beneficial to my knowledge in game development, or if I should just revert back to the basic cs degree and spend my free time exploring game development/programming on my own. I still have plenty of time to change course if I decide to do so, as I'm still working on my Associate's. Figured this would be the idea place for advice.

Someone offered to invest in my game

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 01:59 AM PDT

I am developing a game and somebody contacted me more like a fan asking me if i offer shares or investment into my game for low tier investments or like 5k, 10k.

This is my first game so I wouldn't know what I could offer back, anyone has experience with this stuff before?

My game Kickstarter campaign is set to start until next year so, this funds would be super useful right now.
