I have learned syntax, now what? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:31 PM PDT I am familiar with the syntax and data structures of Python C++ Java but am stuck on how to actually build a solid application. When browsing other people's projects it seems like they are using other resources other than just their text editor to create their applications. How do I find these resources so I am not constantly reinventing the wheel? I hope my question makes sense and I'd appreciate any advice. I am 2/3rds completed with a computer science bachelor's degree from WGU (an online University) and still feel a little uneasy about my ability to create something useful. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:21 PM PDT Will a free learning tool be good for me? Will it teach me what I need to learn? If so, where can I find more reliable sources of this? I am currently using Sololearn but I sometimes feel like some information is missing(I know I just started but that how I have been feelinhg). Some lessons are confuse. I am still not getting it. Where am I supposed to code? I mean, what software is used for that? For all I know, people are kinda coding in the air. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:47 PM PDT Hello, I'm a college Graduate with a degree in computer science, but while I was in college, I didn't have enough time to sit down and actually learn programming, but now that I'm out of college, I seem to be struggling tremendously with understanding how to manipulate data when it comes to programming the basics, Like it's not the syntax I'm struggling with its learning when to use an if statement or a for loop or an array to solve problems in JavaScript, Can someone help me understand how I can learn how to manipulate data? How to add some flair to border box? (CSS newbie) Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:43 PM PDT Hey y'all, just started on CSS this week and finally doing a mini website for class, just wondering if there's a way to flair up a border box with an overlaid image/graphic? Easiest comparison I can think of is how some Tumblr themes do the background image for posts, but can't quite pick apart how to emulate it on my own for a pretty simple bare bones website. It's a class assignment, and this part isn't required so I wouldn't stress over it, but, I really want to push myself a little and have that aesthetic if possible. [link] [comments] |
I want to work in education software development, and I don't know where to start. Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:21 PM PDT I feel like I'm asking a really stupid question here, but I've looked through the FAQ and couldn't find an answer. Please go easy on me if I'm asking the wrong question or making false assumptions. I'm very much open to learning. I have zero experience in programming (unless you count learning basic HTML to change the font color on my Neopets webpage). I have been working as a high school teacher for a while now, and I want to move into web/software development, especially foreign language learning software (think Duolingo). I'm at a total loss for where to begin, and I'm trying to resist the urge to go for an associate's degree just to have something on my resume. I'm worried that learning through online courses won't make me marketable as a potential employee, and I don't really learn well without some form of guidance. Are there any reputable courses out there (free or paid) that will take me from zero to developer within a year or two? Bonus points if there's something I can put on my resume after that. Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:46 PM PDT I'm overwhelmed by the amount of resources there are. Is the algorithms specialisation on Coursera by Stanford enough? I will be supplementing what I learn with LC simultaneously. [link] [comments] |
Is there any online course as good or better than Harvard's CS50? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:33 PM PDT I really want to take CS50 from Harvardx but I'm concerned about the privacy policy, it seems like they share information on you with researchers. Is this truly the single best course (as it looks like it is), or are there better ones? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:39 PM PDT Find ways to getting started in programming is easy, but how do I get into networking? I have no knowledge of IP and TCP stuff. Port Forwarding, Routers etc. I have very basic knowledge on Haskell and C, hope thats enough to grasp some basics. [link] [comments] |
Getting distracted by multiple interests Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:13 PM PDT Not entirely sure if this is the appropriate subreddit, but figured it might be in line with what other people are experiencing or have experienced: In the past couple months I've been really trying to learn more about programming and computers in general. But the problem is that because I have multiple areas of interest (none of which I am particularly experienced or knowledgable in), I feel that I often get distracted. Instead of diving in deeply into one topic at a time, I am switching between topics seemingly at random and find myself unsure of which path to follow first. For example, a few of my personal interests include: operating systems in general, linux (e.g. kernel, development, etc.), cryptography and computer security, microcontrollers and embedded programming, networking, etc.. etc..... Again, not particularly knowledgable in any of these subjects (in fact, just the opposite) which could be a reason as to why I'm bouncing around so much. One day I will start reading a book on linux, the next a different book on networking protocols.... Any advice to stay focused on a topic at a time? Or maybe advice to allow myself to explore other areas while still maintaining focus? There doesn't seem to be enough time in the day! [link] [comments] |
Tic tac toe continues even after win is True (Python) Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:46 PM PDT Re: Tic tac toe on python This is most of the code regarding the looping The problem: After getting three Xs or Os in a row, the message "xx has won" is printed, followed by "player x's choose your row" again. By my understanding the game should stop because it is a while loop and win == False. Any help or advise on how to shorten my code is welcome :)

First webpage in attempt to hone some of the things I've learned so far, would love feedback! Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:08 PM PDT Hi all, I've been taking Colt Steele's Udemy web dev course and just wrapped up the HTML/CSS sections (roughly unit 10 of the new modules). I took a break before going into he bootstrap section so I could practice on some of the skills I got from the course and I'd love some feedback. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1z8-IsLMgyzGBk9YQVOpg0SDwe9bxJScX/view?usp=sharing I've been trying to get the border on each of my titles to go exactly under the text and remain that way when the page is resized but I can't get it to work. Any ideas how I can go about that? It might sound silly but is that something I could include in a portfolio or is not even worth it since it's only html/css? Thank you! Edit: to do the border will I need to use media queries to have it adjust for each screen size? Or maybe set a title width within a div and give that a border-bottom? Is there a wrong way to do input validation loops in Python? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:34 PM PDT Ok so the traditional way of doing input validation is this: Here is another way I found that seems more elegant to me, but I don't see it used in what I'm reading. Is there anything wrong with not taking the input before the loop starts? [link] [comments] |
Can i Create E-Commerce Website with my current skill set? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:07 PM PDT So, I'm really in rush because I need to create an E-Commerce website, the deadline is in the end of the month. I want to create the website from scratch, I know HTML, CSS, I'll say a bit of PHP, I'm currently learning Laravel from Laracasts, and I'm only half way of finishing the lessons, I just finished the section 7 to be exact so I already know the The Seven Restful Controller Actions. I need the website for a school project, I don't need to deploy it or anything, just need to show that it functions. So the big question is, are my skills enough to create this website? or do I still need to learn something aside from the skills I mentioned to make this possible? I hope I've given enough information so my question can be answered. I tried to post on r/webdev but my account is too young so it got automatically deleted. I still hope someone can answer my questions here. [link] [comments] |
Is there a name for the design pattern where a server acts as a client intermediate? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:58 PM PDT For example I have a booking website like expedia. I have a client contact my server and then my server acts like a client and contacts several service providers. In this case, is my server is really a server and client. Is there a good name for this pattern? [link] [comments] |
How compare the states of this list? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:38 PM PDT Hi everyone. Could someone tell me how to do this? Im doing a chessboard, with reed switchs and magnets (following a unfinished tutorial). What I want to do is verify that the starting position is correct (all pieces on place). And if it is correct then to be able to move the pieces. Currently I can move the pieces but I do not verify the position. Of course, if not, turn the led of the pieces that is not on his place. (not piece recognition, just is expected the a1,b1,c1, etc is close, so, if there is no piece it will be open, and that is a board with bad position. The starting position of the board is this this is the program with which I check if there was a change and move the pieces. Having these values I think it should be possible to generate the function I want. But the truth is that I can't find the way around. Here is not the funtion led, etc. But i dont know how compare the board properly. Thanks to everyone. [link] [comments] |
Hi! I have a problem with my following code in C++. Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:12 PM PDT Hi! As stated above, I have a problem with my C++. I'm a complete and utter noob at programming but I want to learn. My question is... How do I make this while loop stop? I want it to stop when the user presses "n" at the end cin. But when I press "n" it doesn't stop. What am I doing wrong? (This is a cuboid calculator btw) #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { char yOrN = ('y') ; while (yOrN = 'y') { cout << "Please type the width underneath." << endl; int width; cin >> width; cout << "Please type the length underneath." << endl; int length; cin >> length; cout << "Please type the height underneath." << endl; int height; cin >> height; int cuboidDimensions; cuboidDimensions = height * length * width; cout << endl << "Okay, the volume is: " << cuboidDimensions << endl; cout << endl << "Any more cuboids? y or n." << endl; cin >> yOrN; } } [link] [comments] |
Objective C File Not Opened / No Program Output Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:10 PM PDT https://stackoverflow.com/questions/64473437/objective-c-file-not-openned-no-program-output Anyone have any idea why my program is written in multiple languages. I am just attempting to get the program to compile but get: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 Can't figure out what the actual issue is as I think it's a simple fix. If you have any ideas you will be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How do you update thousands of stuff on screen without losing performance? Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:00 PM PDT I have always been fascinated by things like particle systems, fully destructible environment and everything where you have to update 10,000s of objects without affecting performance. I just recently started playing Drone swarm and once again I came to wonder: How do you update so much stuff while keeping the framerate high? I am a game dev myself and I am struggling with performance with a couple of things on screen, so this type of results baffles me. I would love any pointer towards things that I should look into to achieve this type of things :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:27 PM PDT Up above is my code for reversing an array using recursion. One thing I am having trouble with is when I print nums it shows as an address rather then the actual array. How would I fix this [link] [comments] |
