Anyone here gave up 2d sprite because 3d modeling is easier?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 08:44 AM PDT

I'm trying to expand my knowledge in gamedev. I made 2d and 3d games for almost 10 years now in my game company. I'm mostly the programmer and sometimes making music but now I'm interested in trying making game art assets but I dunno why I always can't make 2d sprite looks good but when I try to model something, I can make it look better 10x than in 2d.

For instance, I can make a decent looking house in blender but when I try to do this in top down style like in pokemon or stardew valley, it looks like crap/lame. In 3d texture, I can just load substance painter or designer and make a simple texture and uv map that in blender and boom done.

Anyone here has the same experience as me?

A question about .json files and also the legality of certain gameplay elements.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 10:53 AM PDT

Hey everyone; hope all is well! Pretty new to game development and I have two questions. I'll be using Godot 3.2.xx

    First:

    • I plan on using .json files for certain inventory items, and I was wondering if using a spreadsheet program and then exporting as .json would be better than using "CastleDB". From what I've seen, they seem to be very similar, but I'm not sure loading images using a spreadsheet program (Google Sheets, Excel) would be more intuitive than using CastleDB (you can directly import an image file into a column)?

    Second (the big one):

    • My idea is a single-player card game, ala Magic/Hearthstone/Legends, but without the multiplayer aspect. I've been messing around in Godot and art programs and kinda found a stride with coding/designing a card game, so I started digging a little deeper. Wizards of the Coast apparently owns the patent on the "game mechanics" for a card game. Obviously my game will share the basic core principals of a card game (collecting cards, building a deck from scratch, battling NPCs), but the gameplay is in no way, shape, or form identical to MTG. Does this mean that I would still have to pay a licensing fee in order to publish one? Has every game that utilizes card mechanics (Slay the Spire, Legends, Baten Kaitos [GameCube], Faeria, Gwent, etc) had to pay a licensing fee? As long as my gameplay isn't identical to MTG, will I be okay? Should I contact an attorney before going any further?

    I appreciate any replies. Cheers!

What makes a successful adult game?

What makes a successful adult game?

Greetings all. I am in the very early stages of putting together a spec for an adult game and I was hoping to poll the dev audience.

How important do you feel the following aspects are to adult game development:

    • Art
    • Story
    • Voice Acting
    • Animation
    • Gameplay
    • and of course, sexual encounters

The team I have on hand now can crush Art, Story and Voice Acting so I am trying to decide and plan for how much I will need to invest in talent in other areas.

Thanks in advance for any feedback provided.

How do you assign premade animations to multiple character models?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:55 AM PDT

If I were to make something with multiple character models that don't need to run and jump all that differently, would it be possible to automatically assign premade animations to them? If so, how?

Would it be possible to do this with open source software? ( recs would be very helpful)

    Looking to Purchase Artwork

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:41 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm a game composer & I just finished an album of music. I'm looking for a piece of artwork to use as the album cover.

I'd love a shot of a landscape- preferably a village or city. I'm flexible! I'm looking for something already created, not necessarily custom.

Send me a DM with your rates & examples of any work you have that might fit.

    Thanks all,

    Gillian
