Is a coding boot camp worth it?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 02:39 PM PDT

I know this has probably been asked so many times, but I was looking at Columbia University's boot camp and even talked with an advisor. They had a very up to date curriculum and its learning full stack. It would be a 24 month thing as a part timer and the cost was not to bad either which was 13,500.

I am thinking about it because I already am teaching myself HTML CSS and JavaScript and have a good grasp on it. I am comparing it to a 4 year degree which will obviously take long and even cost more than the 13,500 in total. Also when it comes to a degree I have seen first hand at how what you learn there is not what most of the jobs want nowadays.

Even though I can teach myself, the boot camp can bring a lot of networking into play were as right now I know absolutely no one.

I guess I am trying to convince myself its worth it, but I want to hear other peoples opinions. My dad said no because its to much money, but I think compared to what I would pay for 4 years of school its really not to much.

How do you estimate job costs?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:26 AM PDT

I've just started in the realm of contract work and I have no idea how to go about evaluating the cost. Especially for flat costs.

For example, I have a project that will require integration with several apis, chat, video, account management, and CRUD actions. Mostly frontend work from scratch but some minor backend.

I'm not sure how much I should quote that is fair to both of us.

github - quality vs. quantity trade off?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:59 AM PDT

Junior web dev/job seeking. I know it's important to have an active GitHub profile and strong commit history, but what's the balance between quantity and quality?

Should I limit my repos only to larger/higher quality projects? I pin my portfolio worthy projects, but I create repos for every little project I do rather than, for example, just creating code sandboxes of them - primarily because I want to my GitHub profile to accurately reflect all of my coding activity. I feel like this may be overkill and the overall quality of my GitHub may suffer because of this. What's the best practice?

What do you do when the money runs out?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:07 PM PDT

I was a web developer for a few years, but I've been unemployed for over three months now. Savings are dwindling and I recently had to dip into my 401k, which obviously is not financially smart or sustainable. I've had plenty of phone screens, some technical interviews, and just a few onsites. No offers. Full time roles, contract roles; doesn't matter, same result. I try to be hopeful but, to be completely realistic, there's no telling when (or if) I'll be hired again.

I'm sure I'm not the only developer here who has been without pay for an extended period, so I ask: what have you done in a similar situation? I'm seriously considering driving for UberEats just to have some income. Unless you have an established network and project history, the freelance market is really cut-throat nowadays, so I won't be able to do that anytime soon. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences/advice.

I've been told that "Once you reach a certain level in knowledge in Frontend web dev you should move to learning backend and become full-stack web dev" - I need an expert opinion and hoping this is not true

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:47 AM PDT

NOTE: I'm not spitting on full-stack web devs here, I have nothing but respect for them.

The reason why I'm writing this because the current project I'm working on has most of the logic done on the back-end unlike the projects so far. For the sake of being "more performant".

I'm a front-end web dev for almost 2 years now and planning to stay and master the shit out of everything that is connected to front end web development. I'm not someone who writes only html and css, I consider myself (I hope) being proficient with writing JS code, solving problems and following good practices on my level.

I love the idea of looking at the beautiful web app you bring to life and playing with a beautiful design and features.

I'm not a fan of the idea of full-stack web development at all. What is the point "taking a bite out of everything and realizing you bit more than you can chew" - being jack of all trades, but master of none. I doubt that you can absorb that much knowledge unless you eat and breathe code which is out of the question for me and most people. Learning Html + Css + Js + all the tricks of the library/framework you are using (react, vue, angular, etc...) + backend coding + frameworks + databases + dev-ops stuff to a professional and competent level sounds very stupid and unreal to me.

And it just disappoints me seeing majority of the job applications are for full-stack web devs

    Time working on work project

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Hi, i just started this job (with about 1 school year & 1.5 professional year of experience) doing web dev.

For some reason i feel like I'm really slow, i'm alone working on this project, i'm far from any other dev due to covid, i'm working on woocommerce which i've never done before, i get rarely any info from the project manager, we never talk except at the end of the day when i tell him what i've done in my day.

So my question is, how do deal with this, what do you do when you feel slow?

    Thank you for any input

Can I create a fluid header with CSS Grid?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Can I create a fluid header with CSS Grid?

I have three areas in my header, which I've currently laid out in the HTML like this:

    <div class="responsive-header"> <div class="slot primary">Widget Title Goes Here</div> <div class="slot secondary slot1">Slot 1</div> <div class="slot secondary slot2">Slot 2</div> </div>

See the wireframe I've (hopefully) included, but the requirements I'm hoping to meet are:

    • When all fit onto a single row, the order is Slot 1, Primary, Slot 2
    • When there is not enough room for one row, the order is Primary, Slot 1, Slot 2 - with Slot 1 and Slot 2 on the second row.
    • When there is not enough room for two rows, the order is still Primary, Slot 1, Slot 2 - with each element having its own row.
    • No media queries - the wrapping happens on its own regardless of viewport width.

    https://preview.redd.it/wx13oykgoiu51.png?width=845&format=png&auto=webp&s=2fa2ffa02335ff478c70cad727e3e38a01a7df09

I'm pretty sure that you can't do this with flexbox. Is it possible with CSS Grid alone, or do you think I have to get JavaScript involved?

API to post pictures on Instagram

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 02:25 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

First post here so I hope I don't mess anything up.

I'm looking for an API solution that lets me post photos (only) directly to my feed on Instagram. I tried the instagram-private-api repo on github but it seems that no longer is supported. I've been looking mostly at Python and Ruby solutions but at this point I will take anything that works.

    Any suggestions are much appreciated.

    Cheers mates.

Adobe XD extension for Visual Studio Code

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:52 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Sharing a new extension for VS Code: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/adobe-xd-for-visual-studio-code

Design systems are the link between Design and Development. To build a successful, tailored, and widely-adopted system, both designers and developers need to have a seat at the table. The new Adobe XD extension for Visual Studio Code allows developers to visually map design sources, created in XD and available in Creative Cloud Libraries, to platform-specific code using design tokens. DesignOps teams will be able to create shareable Design System Packages (DSPs) that contain all the information developers need to consume while coding, including code snippets and documentation.

More details and learn content: https://letsxd.com/vscode

Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Need help aligning columns using CSS!

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:44 PM PDT

Hello! I just joined this sub and if this isn't allowed here I will gladly post this elsewhere. As the title reads, I need help aligning my columns in a very basic design.

I've recently started taking a web development class and I've come across this problem where 3 columns that should be next to each other, are all over the place. We need to "code" a basic 3 column design, using CSS where they are aligned to the center of the body with pictures in each one, with borders etc.

That brings the question: What do I type in the CSS file to align column number 2 and 3 to correspond to column one, if you know what I'm saying.

I've tried Align-content, float, margins and padding's and so on but I just don't seem to get it right.

English is not my first language and I apologize for my horrific grammar, any answers are accepted!

I am planning on starting a new project. Needed some feedback.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:21 PM PDT

It will be a game where a group of friends can join a room. One person would be given a (movie name/book name/TV show name) and an input area with only emoticons allowed. Using emoticons he has to make his friends guess the movie.

. Would like to know if something like this would interest people.

. Also technically how feasible would this be. I see a potential issue with restricting users to adding only emoticons. Also, I feel to give people points even if they are close and may have misspelt the answer (which I see can happen a lot, when typing quickly), I would be needing some system like Levenshtein distance.

Plan on using socketio, js, and react to make this. It will be browser based. Any feedback and ideas both technical and non technical would be appreciated
