Online MSc CS - Glyndwr Wrexham Reviews?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 12:20 AM PDT

Does anybody have any information or reviews about this graduate program: https://online.glyndwr.ac.uk/msc-computer-science/

I was not able to find anything online. I've been rejected from 4 Canadian Universities so far (UofT, UBC, UofA and York). A decision from McMaster is pending, but I am taking this time to look for online computer science masters to apply to. So far these are the programs I have shortlisted:

    - Georgia Tech OMSCS

    - ASU Online MCS through coursera

    - UIUIC Online MCS through coursera

and these are the programs I am trying to find information (student experiences/reviews) on:

    - Glyndwr Wrexham Online MSc CS

    - University of Leicester Advanced CS MSc

    - University of York Msc CS

    - University of Bath Online MSc CS

    - University of Hertfordshire Online MSc Advanced CS

Feel free to list more online CS graduate programs that you may know of. I'm not applying to UT Austin because it requires GRE scores.

SOS: Comp Sci major here need advice

    Posted: 29 May 2020 01:14 AM PDT

My house had a lot of power surges tonight (6-7). It was running fine for about 1.5 to 2 hours after said surges. I was playing a game, and the internet (WiFi) went out. About that time, my mouse and the monitor (running off on board graphics) lost power, my graphics card was still running 2 monitors fine. This is where things get interesting.

I have a USB WiFi dongle and had problems with the internet disconnecting over the past few days.

I was a dumbass and COULD have shorted out a USB on the front panel because of bent pins because I was using tweezers to straighten them out (I know please don't flame) with the power still going. After this, the computer won't turn on at all.

No lights or anything from the mobo or anything.

    A) what are the chances my power supply (650-700W) caused these issues?

    B) what kind of damage could I have caused? Aka could my Mobo be fried?

    Please help :(

    Computer Architecture resources

Any recommendations on books/resources for self learning computer architecture? I have some programming experience but otherwise am not very educated in Computer science (I'm a chemical engineering student). Any help would be appreciated!

[R] Google Introduces BLEURT — a BERT-Based NLG Evaluation Metric

    Posted: 28 May 2020 11:34 AM PDT

The challenge is to develop a novel and automatic metric that can be robust and reliable enough to match the evaluation quality that human annotation can deliver. In the recently published paper BLEURT: Learning Robust Metrics for Text Generation, a Google Research team proposes the automatic metric BLEURT (Bilingual Evaluation Understudy with Representations from Transformers) which is based on the highly successful Google language model BERT and designed to model such human assessments.

Here is a quick read: Google Introduces BLEURT — a BERT-Based NLG Evaluation Metric

The paper BLEURT: Learning Robust Metrics for Text Generation is available on arXiv.

Computer Science book recommendations for a Curious Bioinformatics Student?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 12:42 PM PDT

I'm a student of bioinformatics about to finish a masters. As part of my dissertation whenever I am using a specialised tool or package I tend to read the paper associated with it for a better understanding. Today I read the paper for XGboost ( https://www.kdd.org/kdd2016/papers/files/rfp0697-chenAemb.pdf ). Looking at the formulae in this paper made me realise that I am completely naive to the general principals of computer science.

So as such I was wondering if anybody on this forum has any recommendations for an introduction to computer science for people that already know about programming and statistics? I would prefer something that I can buy as a hard copy book, as I like to use study as a way of getting away from the screen. Thanks!
