    Basic Firebase Json Lookup

    Posted: 23 May 2020 08:15 PM PDT

    Hello and thank you in advance! Disclaimer that i have minimal programming experience.

    I am working in a firebase database and have downloaded my data as a json. Is there an easy way to get some of this data into a google sheet? That is where I am more comfortable doing vlookups on the data to get what I need. I'm willing to learn some javascript if that is what it takes, just not sure about the logistics of where to code and where to pull the json data from into the sheet.

    Any pointers would be helpful.

    What do I do?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 10:18 AM PDT

    (Apologies if this is in the wrong sub). For a bit of background, I go to school at a solid CS school in the states, and I'm currently at home in quarantine with too much time on my hands and too little ideas on what to do.

    My main concern is - I want to do something that's visible. I have read countless posts on how programmers can work on mini-projects on the side, anywhere from small command line tools up to full fledged video games that help them learn a new language or framework. I've done a couple of these, but I'm not satisfied. It's cool that I can create such tools, but if no one uses them (except me), what is the point? I want to be able to share my work with the world, making something that lots of people will use (I'm not talking on the scale of millions or billions, but even a few hundred would be nice). Every single tool I create or think of seems to already exist there, which makes me question - what's the point of making these redundant tools? From a purely educational perspective, I am more than happy to learn, but there is zero visibility, and after I've put all those hours into a project, it just sits and gets dusty in the depths of my GitHub.

    I see my friends around me making the tiniest things, such as Chrome extensions. Their ideas are nifty and I'm sure that if they were to publish something like that, they will receive lots of users. I know that I am a fast learner and if I put my mind to something, I would most definitely be able to complete it - I just don't know how to work on something that people will know of and use, whether it's something I create from scratch, or some larger project I collaborate on.

    I have looked into opportunities such as freelance to at least make some quick money, but those websites seem to be flooded with offers from tons of people (half of whom seem to be bots), so that was a bust as well.

    This may come off as a slight rant, and I apologize for that, but I am looking for advice. Every hour of my day that I watch Netflix I regret the good that I could otherwise have done with my skills. Does anyone have any insights or advice on this?

    Tl;dr - having trouble finding something at the intersection of [things people find useful] and [problems that don't already have a well established and highly performant solution]

    What does this mean?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 06:15 PM PDT

    so I accidentally found this page by searching ak or m4vva1("I was looking for cs go tips") and because it seemed to have a code I wanted to know what it meant.
    it had the .gov which meant it was owned by the government and its also an archive which meant that the original probably got deleted but that's all I know.
    I really want to know what it means and hopefully I didn't join the wrong subreddit

    Ideas for map with countdown timers

    Posted: 23 May 2020 06:09 PM PDT

    Hi guys

    I'm trying to find a method/simple way to do the following:

    A bunch of foundation piles are being installed let's say 1-10. The holes are drilled out, and then the holes are tested before installing the foundation pile itself. If the test fails, we need to wait 2 days, if it passes, wait 3 days for the next step.

    I have the autocad drawings of the foundation layout I can use as a map, and right now I'm following it all by hand, but in reality there are 150 piles and I think I will get lost in this real fast if I don't find an easier way to stay on top of it. Basically I'd love to have a map with the piles as "points" on it, and them changing colors depending on what their status is (tested and failed, tested and passed, or how many days they have remaining where we can go back to them). Obviously I will be entering the original dates as data and how many days we need to wait before returning to said pile.

    I know the explanation is a bit confusing but hopefully someone gets the idea.

    I've managed to do it on a table in Excel, but looking for a way to put it on a map/plan now for better visual.

    Thanks!

    Another question, whats the difference between the development and debugging environs of the above?

    Can't find any useful information on google. Thought this was a good place to ask.

    What is NVRAM? I've seen it in the context of UEFI.

    Posted: 23 May 2020 07:14 PM PDT

    If we break down the acronym, NVRAM is

    • nonvolatile
    • random access
    • memory

    Nonvolatile memory is just persistent storage. Thus NVRAM is storage that is random access, meaning different access orders are the same speed.

    But what is the significance of this? We can use an SSD to implement NVRAM, no? Just slow certain reads down to equalize the speeds.

    Tasked myself with building an LMS like Canvas. Advice needed.

    Posted: 23 May 2020 02:32 PM PDT

    So I have tasked myself with building a full fledged LMS system like Canvas. I have very little programming knowledge just took on this project because of my keen interest in programming. I am aware that I might be too ambitious with this but I do have to try to build it somehow. Plus with COVID-19 I don't really have anything better to do at home. I do realize the enormity and scale of this project but I am focussed on learning the skill rather than perfecting the target.

    I want the community to help me with what specific programming knowledge would be required in order to initiate this task. Which language and platforms should I begin with? A list in order of what should I do first and look into would be of great help.

    Are there any books that walk through the history of CS and programming?

    Posted: 22 May 2020 10:23 PM PDT

    I am really interested in reading more about where everything began, the first computer, the first programming language, the evolution of that whole field, Turing machine, etc. Sure I can search and read on Google, but it'd be really nicer if there are books that walk you through everything, connect things together and gives you ideas of what to read next and that sort of thing. Also, documentaries would be appreciated.

    Edit: Thanks, guys. I am 22, so I missed out on A LOT of important milestones in this field and I really wanted to know how did we get here and how the amazing things we do nowadays started. I have got now a really great list of both books and videos that would at least guide me a little bit on my journey to learning more about the history of the digital revolution! Thank you very much for everyone who recommended something. I really appreciate it!

    Is there any dialogflow chatbot written in kotlin?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 07:37 AM PDT

    I've been trying to add a chatbot module to an android app but I can't find any fully functional dialogflow chatbots written in kotlin. Every code sample I found is basically the same one and it is not working (first time I download a proyect from github that crashes on execution). I'd really like to add this module but the time I'm wasting on this is just not worth it.

    I'm not looking for anything fancy, pretty much something that says "hello" back

    I need to transform a value from 0 to 410, into another from 255-0. What's the logic behind it?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 04:28 PM PDT

    This might be a basic logic question, but I can't figure it out neither how to search for it. I don't need the exact codes, just some light on how to do it (unless I need some special function other than basic operators).

    Situation:

    Using an Arduino to control a motor. I'm getting an analog input from a potentiometer, where 2/5 means rotating to one side, the middle 1/5 is stopped, and the last 2/5 are rotating to the other side. The last one is easy, just multiplying by a factor and it goes right. But the first ones, I need to get it opposite, with 0 being max.

    Frustrated about starting new projects, need some advice

    Posted: 23 May 2020 11:30 AM PDT

    I'm an intermediate programmer so don't have much experience with projects. Whenever I want to start something (i.e. a Paint app, snake game etc.), I'm always stuck for hours in a loop of downloading the right JDK/Platforms/etc. and to no avail– something's always different from what the YouTube video/guide's doing. I get lost in this process and never get any work done.

    How can I start doing these coding projects in a more productive manner? It's really frustrating when getting started itself seems so intimidating and complicated.

    Flutter PDF table generation - issue with column width

    Posted: 23 May 2020 09:15 AM PDT

    Hi all,

    Fairly straightforward question. I've been working with the PDF (https://pub.dev/packages/pdf) and flutter_full_pdf_viewer (https://pub.dev/packages/flutter_full_pdf_viewer) packages trying to create PDFs with tables that are essentially questionnaires.

    Im creating the table with the Table.fromTextArray() function from 'pdf/widgets.dart' import.

    So far so good, but the issue is when a column value is too large. Rather than stretching vertically, it stretches horizontally, narrowing the other columns.

    I was wondering if anyone knows how to prevent this, perhaps with fixing the size of individual columns to prevent any kind of stretching. The issue I'm having is more a documentation issue, I cant find anything online about how to do this.

    Anyone who can help or point me in the right direction would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Issues executing method that prints array (Java)

    Posted: 23 May 2020 01:52 PM PDT

    This is a personal project that I am working on. It's purpose is to return a list of anime as recommendations based on the user's answers to prompted questions. I constructed strings that serve as possible answers (fantasy, science fiction, classic, etc) to the prompts. If the user answers with one of those strings, it is passed down to a method that is meant to return an array of anime. However, I cannot get the method that actually returns the array to execute. Once the questions are answered, the program stops executing. I tried to change the return type of the method from void to String, but that did not solve the issue. Would any of you like to comment on what the issue here is?

    import java.util.Scanner ;

    public class AnimeRecommendatons

    {

    public static void main (String [] args) { Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in) ; String answer1 ; String answer2 ;

    String fantasy = "Fantasy" ; String scienceFiction = "Science Fiction" ; String thrillers = "Thrillers" ;

    String classic = "Classic" ; String modern = "Modern" ; String any = "Any era" ;

    System.out.println ("Which of these genres do you prefer?: "

    + fantasy + ", " + scienceFiction + ", or "

    + thrillers) ;

    answer1 = input.nextLine () ;

    System.out.println ("What era of anime are you interested in?: "

    + classic + ", " + modern + ", or " + any) ;

    answer2 = input.nextLine () ;

    if (answer1 == fantasy && answer2 == classic)

    reccomendationOne (answer1, answer2) ;

    } public static void reccomendationOne (String answer1, String answer2) { String [] classicFantasiesList = {"Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood",

    "Inyuyasha", "Berserk", "Naruto", "Naruto Shippuden",

    "Hunter X Hunter", "Bleach"} ;

    for (int i = 0 ; i < classicFantasiesList.length ; i ++) System.out.println (classicFantasiesList [i]); }

    }

    What program do I use for a simple web scrape tool? (with log in)

    Posted: 23 May 2020 11:15 AM PDT

    Hello!

    Thanks for reading this post, I have 0 experience in this field so I rely on your expertise!

    Long story short: I'm looking for a program that does a search on a specific keyword on two different websites and scrape the result to a spread type sheet.

    So something like: "Keyword" - Result website 1 - Result website 2

    The searches can be done easily with a url + "/search=keyword" The results can also be easily found in the html code.

    Would this be possible in a spread sheet like program like Google Spreadsheets or Excel?

    Some challenges: - One site requires log in

    Would love to hear your opinions on this one!

    Hello, I am trying to capture an image from raspberry pi camera (controlled with the website) and display it on the website. However I am getting an error " PiCameraMMALError: Failed to enable connection: Out of resources "

    Code in app.py:

    `from flask import Flask, render_template, url_for` `from time import sleep` `from picamera import PiCamera`

    `app = Flask(__name__)`

    `@app.route('/', methods=['GET', 'POST'])` `def home():` `return render_template('index.html')` `@app.route('/<action>', methods=['GET', 'POST'])` `def Camera(action):` `if action == 'on':` `camera = PiCamera()` `camera.rotation = 180` `camera.start_preview()` `camera.capture('/home/pi/Desktop/FlaskCamera/static/image.jpg')` `camera.stop_preview()`

     `return render_template('index.html')`

    `if __name__ == '__main__':` [`app.run`](https://app.run)`(debug=True, host='`[`192.168.0.108`](https://192.168.0.108)`', port=5000)`

    Code in index.html:

    <html>

    <head>

     `<title>Raspberry Pi Cam</title>`

    </head>

    <body>

     `<h1>RASPBERRY PI CAM</h1>` `<button onclick="window.location.href = '/on'">Capture</button> <br>` `<img src="{{ url_for('static', filename='image.jpg')}}" alt='image' height=300>`

    </body>

    </html>

    This is what the directory looks like:

    FlaskCamera

    --app.py

    --template

    -index.html

    --static

    -image.jpg
