Backend dev looking for hobby on the side project Posted: 19 May 2019 02:29 PM PDT Hey fellow developers! :) I'm looking for a frontend dev who has some cool hobby / not-full-time project idea but needs a backend dev to partner up with either because of not having backend experience or because the backend is so complex that it needs a dedicated dev. I'm a full-time backend dev who likes to do backend stuff in their free time as well (programming is my Netflix, basically :) ). Tech-stack would most likely involve aws-dynamodb + lambda/serverless + cloudfront for the frontend. But spring is also an option if more complex database operations, large payloads, excessive async processing or heavy use of websockets is required. I also know python, vue, a little react, but I suck at design and css is not my thing. Great at working out technical issues back and front and algorithms though. All my friends only know backend, but maybe someone here will respond :) [link] [comments]
Quick question about being a Jr Dev Posted: 19 May 2019 03:59 PM PDT Is it normal for a Senior Dev to go behind your back and change working code that you wrote? My code isn't the best bc I don't have as much real world experience but I know how to program and I can make code work the only factor sometimes is time. We use to do code reviews but not as much lately. My Senior Dev likes to tell me to do things and then later when I'm ready to do it I find out that he already did it or if a do do it later on I discover that he changed my code and re wrote it his way even though my way was working? Should I say something about it because that bothers me. If I can't get code to work that's one thing but if he's changing it just bc he wants it done his way and doesn't even inform me of it so that I can learn, that's a problem and a waste of time. He also tells me to save tasks for him (even though some of them I could do) which is fine but then he does what he told me to do and doesn't do what he said he was going to do. I've only been working there for 3 months and its my first Dev job. Part of me just wants to keep on going and focus on getting better and not sweating the small stuff. The other part of me is like wtf. Other than that he's a good mentor, I've never felt like I was an inconvenience or left out to dry. What he does have is a HUGE ego though. I've never met someone with such a HUGE ego. [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 May 2019 03:56 PM PDT Hello all, I am working with a non-profit organization on a project and want to create a website for this specific project. The website for the project does not have to be much, a few static pages with content and resources, if possible, behind a member's area. Outside of the member's area, I might like to have a directory of some kind and basic information. I am going to be moving from the area soon, and while I will continue to be involved with this project, in the interest of sustainability, I would like to make sure that the website is easily maintainable by others beside myself. I don't have too much experience in webdev (I can put together simple things like githubpages or wordpress), but the others on this project have even less experience, so I need something simple for others to alter. Thus, I am wondering what this community would advise. Sadly, we do not have funds to hire an individual to create a website. I have looked a bit into Wix, Squarespace, and Weebly, and I am thinking that something like weebly might be a good course of action (drag and drop, can create a member's area) for around 15$ a month for two years would be a good deal. I know that this will limit customization, but I am worried that using even something like wordpress would limit others' ability to make changes. I am wondering if there are any other good recommendations, or if you all think I am looking in the right direction? [link] [comments]

I (almost) made NXT.gg, would appreciate some feedback. Posted: 19 May 2019 03:41 PM PDT Over the last couple of months I've been working on a project called NXT ('Next'). My vision is to unite gamers across different games, offer them a place to expose their content (Youtube and Twitch streams) and also serve as a matchmaking tool for games that don't support it. The current version of the website can be found at https://nxt.gg/ Our main differentiating feature is the matchmaking service, it finds other players within the community that own/play the game that you're searching for, pretty awesome for games that no longer have an active multiplayer scene. There is currently a lot of placeholder content and unfinished features but the core has been laid down. We heavily integrate with Discord, it's the go-to communication tool for gamers. I didn't have the chance yet to ask for feedback, and r/webdev seemed like the perfect place, I'd greatly appreciate if I could get some constructive feedback on the idea and the look and feel of the website. Thank you! For those interested, the software stack consists of
P.S. For any gamers out there, are there any specific features you'd like to have implemented within NXT? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 May 2019 03:31 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'm not sure if I'm just missing something in the documentation but I'm using GRUNT/LESS to do my css files. I'm trying to make a few button styles but having trouble with inheritance in the LESS files. Currently my style sheet looks like this: .btn-style { padding: 8px 24px; border-radius: 4px; &-outline { background: transparent; &-blue { color: blue; border: 2px solid blue; } } } What I'd like to have is something simple like <a class="btn-style-outline-blue">Text</a> but to get it to work correctly I have to have <a class="btn-style btn-style-outline btn-style-outline-blue">Text</a>. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you! [link] [comments]

using an android game controller on a mobile web page Posted: 19 May 2019 03:15 PM PDT I am building a remotely operated robot and I am using a webserver to host the web page which acts as the user controller. The user can use the controller on a mobile device to send events to the back end and control the robots hardware. I designed my own controller using some simple buttons and sliders but its not that great. I am now thinking of using an android game controllers such as the Moga Hero Pro. Any advice on how I could connect a device like this to my web page so I could set up some JS listeners for each of the buttons/joysticks? Would this require some level of android dev experience? What tools do you guys use for the deployment and CI process? Posted: 19 May 2019 03:13 PM PDT I am a junior dev and have been playing around with alot of the products in Google Cloud lately. My most recent one has been using app engine and the google SDK to simply run "gcloud app deploy", and it build out my whole node app automatically and pushed it up to the hosted production version. I am working on a small side project right now with 3 others and that really helps especially since I am the only one controlling what gets pushed up. I have been really wanting to dive into kubernetes lately and gain more understanding. I recently watched a google cloud conference video on YT where they showed "cloud code", basically a super easy way to setup kubernetes within your services automatically in VS code. This "devops" stuff has actually been pretty fun exploring and I want to gain better skills with it. Just wanted to see what you guys are using these days. Anything ranging from personal projects, a couple people project or at your company. Another side question.. why do companies always seem to use AWS and never really GCP? Thanks! Are there any advantages to serving different versions of an application based on User Device? Posted: 19 May 2019 02:54 PM PDT I've noticed a lot of sites won't display their mobile version on a desktop when resizing the browser. They appear to be serving different files based on the device making the request. Is there ever an advantage to doing this? If the developers are worried about browser support, shouldn't they just rely on feature detection? [link] [comments]

[Beginner]Out of pure interest, I created a webpage but now... Posted: 19 May 2019 01:37 PM PDT I saw a pretty famous pizza place running their business through their FB page(so that I wouldn't copy their layout/code) and built a very basic webpage. Granted it is pretty low caliber, should I add this to my Github and have it as listed experience? Should I reach out and try to sell this webpage to the company? The more I work on it, just to push my own limits, it's making me wonder if I should try to market it to the company more. Looking for thoughts and input. Thanks in advance. *Edited for more content* It first started as just an HTML/CSS touch and go. But here lately I've been adding facebook messenger/like button, GPS location within JS hidden script. Still working on making it mobile friendly, as it's currently not viewable 'perfectly' on mobile. The more I learn, the more I add to it. I've incorporated their logo, pictures from FB and quotes from FB(not going to publish unless told I am allowed to by the company). But I think this shows a caliber of what I can do. Billing the customer, how do you do it? Posted: 19 May 2019 03:03 AM PDT I have a customer who once in a while calls me. I've agreed with him a fixed price/hour. But sometimes the call/issue only takes 20min to solve. How do you bill your customers for such things? I feel like it's too much time consuming to track and add up at the end of the month these "less than an hour" things. I kinda feel like that i should agree in the future that an hour starts after 10min. [link] [comments]
New to HTML & CSS (Need help with this question) Posted: 19 May 2019 12:16 PM PDT Hello! I am about 1 week into learning web programming for my college class so I barely know much. I have a simple question to ask. How do I apply border-box models to elements in a document? Here is my question fully worded " Create a style rule to apply the Border Box model to all header, ul, nav, li, and a elements in the document". I am having lots of trouble with this and my online professor takes over a day to respond so it's really hard to get help quick. [link] [comments]
Auth0 & React/Gatsby. Adding permament "Access" to content for a demo after "purchase"? Posted: 19 May 2019 11:54 AM PDT I had no idea how to phrase this one to google to get what I was looking for, so fingers crossed that someone here has built something like this before. I'm building a demo application, while my login authentication features are already built for access, one of the features is that users can log in with auth0, and 'buy' one of three items, (Which are e-courses). However, I've been working with Auth0 for perhaps a week now, so I am quite, quite lost. In fact, usually this is the part where I would make some guesses about how I would go about adding this functionality, but for the first time I have absolutely 0 guesses. Has anyone built something similiar to this before? It will be hosted on Netlify and files served from Github (if that matters, I wasn't sure if I would have to end up writing some netlify lambda functions to get this working). [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 May 2019 11:35 AM PDT I'm looking for an integrated application process for potential candidates. It would be awesome if the forums and application process were connected but it's okay if they aren't. HTML Select menu option won't change when I select it Posted: 19 May 2019 11:26 AM PDT I have a select menu in HTML, and when I change the option, the value doesn't change in Javascript. I have been researching and racking my brain for 2 days now. Here is my code: HTML:
Javascript:
_______________ All it does is keep the first value of the select menu as the selected index. What can I do to fix this? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Looking for a product calculator plugin Posted: 19 May 2019 11:09 AM PDT I'm trying to create a product calculator for a digital design product where customers can choose between various options and extras for their requested artwork subscription. This would allow them to choose options such as how many pieces of artwork they recieve each month (1,2 or 3 a month etc), and additional options such as format, colour and extras. This would calculate a monthly price and then allow them to purchase this subscription. I've tried using woocommerce in Wordpress, but it doesn't seem to have the functionality to set up a calculator like this. The solution doesn't have to be compatible with woocommerce, but i'd prefer not to have to build this in Javascript... Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
