    What is the connection between India and CS?

    Has anyone else noticed that CS tends to have very high percentage of Indian people? I take CS classes in the US, and I would say about 50% of my classes (in the US) is Indian. Of course, there are about 1.25 billion Indian people globally, so even if a small percentage of Indians came to the US for classes, that would still be a lot of Indians. But China has 1.38 billion people, but there are no Chinese people in my classes (maybe one, indeed very few, almost 0 if not 0).

    And specifically, why CS? Are they very over-represented in other fields as well?

    Technical questions should not be asked at career fairs

    Yesterday I attended a career fair, mostly to get an idea of what local companies had software engineering intern positions. I waited in line at the table for Bloomberg, and when I got to them the woman I was talking too just started interviewing me, which was fine until she asked me a technical question. It was fairly simple (merging 2 sorted linked lists into 1), but she just told me to write the solution on the back of my resume). In a loud gymnasium with tons of people waiting in line to talk to the engineers, I felt like I just had to start writing down. I had a pen, so erasing wasn't possible, and what I wrote down was complete shit. When I explained my solution, it made sense, and I've done that problem before so I know how to do it. It just infuriates me that I would be judged on something like that. How does that tell Bloomberg anything about what I am capable of doing? Even in a normal interview setting I think that companies go way overboard with these types of questions, but this was just absolute bullshit.

    Anyone else love programming & hate the industry?

    Hi! I'm 24. I always had passion for hacking and coding but now when I made it a job I feel like it's draining my all energy. I tried to try different enviroments: startups / software houses / freelance. I love to do some side projects but at the same time all the work that brings me money is just boring. CRUD apps and marketing bullshit. I tried to change the technology from webdev to mobile and got a job at a startup. The first half a year was awesome. I learned so much. Then our CEO fired our devs because they were burned out from fcked up management. There were so much pressure on me later that I had to leave too. Got a bit hopeless now, not sure if I want to go back to IT.

    ubiquity of hostile engineers and how to deal with them

    I've worked with many different teams now, and I can't help but get the impression that this field aggregates a lot of hostile (though smart) people that shroud teams in a volatile air.

    To be clear, I'm not talking about receiving harsh criticism when I make a mistake, I'm talking about rudeness and hostility in any form of general communication and interaction.

    I joined a new team, and the lead seems to constantly make any and every interaction as contentious as possible. For example: I may walk up with an update, he'll listen to exactly 3 words from me before interrupting me saying "get to the point". I'll do just that, then he'll start yelling at me about not providing enough details (which he requested to bypass when interrupting me).

    In the past, I've been on teams with the same exact arrangement, with an aggressively hostile lead and colleagues who will absolutely do anything they can to avoid interacting with them. I've also been on teams where most (if not all) engineers were similarly hostile and contentious, and a lot of time was wasted on them tearing down each others' ideas and attempting to prove that they're the smartest of the bunch.

    Is this just how most engineers are? I love software development, but I don't want to spend my career being yelled at for breathing.

    How to find another job while pair programming?

    My company recently instituted an extremely strict "you must always pair program" rule. It's the dumbest thing ever. I've done it for a week, and they have no flexibility.

    Need to do research? You and your pair read the same page.

    Need to just type out some quick things to test? Have fun spending an hour trying to explain your 5 minute POC to a pair

    So I'm looking for a new job. I hate this constant programming. Problem being, how do you sneak away for an interview while you're pair programming? Any tips?

    Is your current job less or more stressful than college?

    College stress has finally gotten to me and I think I've broken. My mom finally called me out on it this week, remarking that she's basically watching me tear myself apart every night the instant I get home.

    I've kept being told "nothing you do in college is relevant to the job" yet I still am sinking dozens of hours a week onto these irrelevant assignments that will never be touched ever again for letters on a piece of paper.

    I wasn't able to get an internship, so I have to accept that even getting hired is a difficult ordeal for me, that I am the non-competitive, below average applicant that is flooding the market. As some people would put it, "how do you even finish your degree without doing an internship?"

    I count the days to freedom, but my definition of freedom is a fucking 9-5 job in a field where I'm going to be settling for a salary that's half that of my peers.

    College has just been this limbo, a mix of "you're behind and accept it" and "your goals are attainable because your peers are achieving the goals you haven't been capable of."

    ...maybe this turned into more of a rant than I thought it was going to be.

    Has anyone received a response or even a job via an "easy apply" on LinkedIn or Indeed?

    It almost feels too good to be true. Applying through LinkedIn, Indeed, or Dice's "Easy Apply" where you just give them your name, email, and resume. That's it. You've applied in 5 seconds. I'm wondering if anyone has ever received a response or even a job from using those. I feel like they must get a lot of junk in that "inbox" since it's so easy to submit so they don't bother looking through it.

    I usually just use LinkedIn, Indeed, or Dice to search, then find the listing on the company's website, then apply through there. But sometimes they don't have the listing on their site or, to be honest, I just get lazy and don't want to bother.

    Am I wasting my time by applying through LinkedIn, Indeed, or Dice? Does it increase your chances to go through the company's website if possible?

    Follow up question: Does being a "featured applicant" on LinkedIn (having LinkedIn Premium) matter at all?

    Those who have quit their lucrative jobs to fulfill a dream, before returning to the industry (if at all), are you happy with your decision? What is your story? What would you hab done differently?

    Been mauling over the decision of working a few more years, saving up, selling everything and traveling the world on savings. Then maybe come back to the industry after a couple years.

    Worried my skill may have deteriorated too much by then. Maybe I'm now behind on savings/promotions/salary.... I know I know. Materialistic things. But lots of fun things cost money. Supporting a future family cost money. Financial freedom is much less stressful than paycheck to paycheck.

    Those who have done this... where are you now? What did you do with your time off? Do you regret anything?

    How to quit this job without burning bridges?

    I'm working at a startup the past month. The pay is very little. I've had friction since the first week with one of their workers. She kept trying to take my task. On top of that, every time she finds something wrong in the system, she will go and tell the manager instead of telling me so that I can fix it. Today they came and sort of ganged up on me saying my approach was "WRONG". It is obvious to me that they both were discussing this before they came to me. Then the manager sort of laughed and made this off handed remark that I am slow. This worker also has been trying to take tasks from me and then coming back and asking me to teach her how to do them, this is ridiculous. How do I leave tactfully without saying I'm quitting because I'm pissed off that you're both ganging up on me and it makes me feel bad about myself.

    Having Trouble Trying to Find an Internship

    Currently a junior getting my BS in CS with no prior industry experience.

    I currently work at my university as a Junior Sys Admin, and worked at a local tech repair shop during high school, unfortunately thats as close to "industry experience" as I have which is obviously not that helpful.

    Ultimately I'd just like to get an internship this summer to get some real life experience but I'm having a hard time getting any calls back from companies. I've not been picking and basically applied everything that I can find whether it be local companies or larger ones, I've probably applied to about 80+ places at this point, and have not been contacted back for a single interview.

    I've been mingling with a few software engineers are companies like Twitter, Stripe, and Facebook not to get jobs but just inputs on my resume and stuff and they've all given me positive feedback saying and some criticism that I've used to improve it.

    Not sure what I should be doing at this point, anyone else on this struggle bus as well?!

    Bootcamp or second Bachelor’s worth it?

    Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask if it was worth it to get a second bachelor's or if I should attend a boot camp.

    I am graduating in May majoring in something similar to cognitive or information science. I don't have a good GPA and I'm not a good programmer. I only know how to code basic loops and data structures based on studying on my own. But I went to a Hackathon/recruiting event and landed a summer internship at a big bank.

    However, my goal is to work at a top tech company and actually be a good programmer. I got extremely lucky because I happened to have studied the same exact questions asked during my technical interview (strings, palindromes, etc). My GPA for reasons will be not good enough to get into grad school for sure (<3.0). My major mostly has people go into QA testing, which I don't want to do.

    Thus, I feel like I am unqualified and even though I will try to prepare for the internship, they might find out that I don't know what I am doing at all. So, I want to go to a boot camp or get a second bachelor's after the summer internship. If i re-enroll in college, I think I would have a leg-up over other freshman/sophomores because of my past experience, which would help land a big 4 internship for freshman/sophomores. A boot camp may be more practical and affordable though.

    Applied to a couple jobs, but after a good week at work I feel like I should stay.

    So I have been on a project for the last year and a half and it is getting close to completion, although it is way overdue. I was put on this project right when I was hired and before I graduated, and initially had a couple people on it with me but they were pilled away on other assignments aftera couple months.

    Over the course of the project there were times when I really struggled due to lack of support and guidance (first dev job out of college) and the fact that this project was very big and complicated and I was left to do it on my own for the most part, without having much domain knowledge, etc.

    My company hires low and I almost left the company at the beginning of this year when I had another job offer, but they raised my pay up to market value and convinced me to stay.

    Over the last few weeks, though, I have hit a new low... feeling very depressed, unmotivated, and burnt out. I just kept getting nearly all aspects of this project assigned to me despite it being a big project, mostly because I am a knowledge silo and nobody understands it but me, but also because they habitually underestimate how difficult and complicated it is.

    So... I reluctantly applied to a couple jobs. I was reluctant because I am so close to finishing this project, and it has the potential to save the company %50 of their technology costs for all new clients, and I would love to be able to put that on my resume. Also, it would royally screw them over if I left... not that I am irreplaceable, but they put all their eggs in one basket (me) so I am pretty much the only pedson who understands the project inside and out. It would take another dev several months to get up to speed on it, and probably more to understand it fully the way I do.

    And yes, I have been vocal about my situation the entire time. They have made some changes here and there, but I started to feel like a broken record about being the only one on the project, lack of support, etc.

    Recently, however, we got a new project manager who seems to have finally gotten through to management about my issues, and I have noticed a shift in attitude about my project. I have had things taken off my plate that should never have been assigned to me, more willingness from others to do tasks related to the project, etc. Last week was still awful because I am still carrying this project but this week actually ended up being fairly pleasant.

    And then one of the jobs I applied for got back to me and wants a phone interview...

    I know nobody knows what the right decision is for me personally, but I would appreciate the perspective of more experienced and wise people. What would you do? What would you prioritize?

    My thoughts right now are that I would feel terrible leaving the projevct and the company right now because it would affect the people I work with and I am also personally invested in it. But should I not care so much about those things? The new gig seems like it would be cool if I got the job, and could ultimately be a better situation for me all around.

    Got a borderline insulting offer after probation period, not sure how to respond.

    Background:

    I applied to work for a startup about three months ago, thinking it was full time. The posted salary was between 60-80k a year. I went through the interview process, and got to the last step which was a paid coding assignment.

    The CTO asked me what my desired salary would be and I said 80k (which I know is at the higher end of the scale, but this is actually a little lower than what the average salary is in my city for somebody with my experience). He was fine with that, and so I went ahead and completed the assignment and handed it in.

    The CTO contacted me a few days later and said he was happy with my work and wanted to give me an offer. The offer would be a three month contract, with possibility of extension. The salary he was offering me was 75k. I mentioned that the desired salary I stated before the assignment was 80k and he said that given their financial situation, they would be comfortable with 75k and there would be a possibility of a raise in three months. I asked if there was anything else in the offer, like equity, etc and he said no.

    I found what they were doing really interesting, and wanted to go into this job with a good attitude, so I said 75k was fine.

    Fast forward three months:

    The CEO briefly messaged me on Slack the other day and said that they were interested in bringing me on full-time. I was excited that they wanted to do that, as that meant they were happy with my work. I told them that sounds great and I'd like to discuss the specifics in person.

    We had a meeting yesterday (CEO, CTO and I) and essentially they told me that they were happy with my work and my attitude and that they wanted to bring me on full-time. I told them I'm glad they wanted to do that. Then the CEO quickly started talking about salaries in the company, saying that nobody in the company makes more than 75k, that they only pay themselves 70k, etc. The next thing he said was that they could offer me 70k to come on full-time. I asked them if there was any equity they could offer and he said no, and that we could talk about it in January, as they want to make sure the person is a good fit and will be the type to stick around for years.

    I was essentially frozen at this stage, because not only were they reducing my salary, but they were giving me literally no benefits/equity. I didn't know what to say, and so I just said that I'm happy they want to bring me on full-time, and that I would need the weekend to think about it.

    I was pretty mad after that conversation. I did a lot of great work for them over the last three months. I met all of their deadlines and pushed a product out the door. In addition to this, I'm a generalist, and have a wide array of skills. I was jumping between front-end and back-end development, between Node and Python, and doing dev-ops. And so for them to come and offer me a lower salary, after saying there may be a salary increase, and offer me no benefits or equity felt like a slap in the face.

    How should I respond? I was thinking of telling them to extend my contract at my current rate for another three months. That would give me more time to feel it out and possibly look for another job.

    Am I ready to be a contributing junior developer?

    Hi, I was wondering if anyone could critique my current portfolio, and see if they think I am ready to be a junior developer. My biggest fear is joining a team and not being able to contribute anything at all, I want to bring value to whoever I work with.

    I was previously an apprentice at a boot camp called The Software Guild, I ended up not completing the course at the very last project due to issues with the other two juniors I was working with. Although I have acquired all the knowledge from the curriculum. I also do not have a formal degree, I only have about 45 credits from my local CC. I believe I can make up for this due to my hands on coding, and willingness to learn and be uncomfortable.

    I haven't been making commits recently due to pursuing my own business ventures, but I've sparked interest with many recruiters, I just need some time to refine my knowledge again. Based on my portfolio, am I ready to be a junior developer? I've asked a couple developers in the work force and they think I could be considered 1-2 years experience professionally. Imposters syndrome is so real in IT.

    How do I deal with a coworker that clearly does not like me? It is kind of getting me down...

    For some background: both this coworker and I both are female (not sure if this matters) recent college grads who started working at our company as soon as we graduated, which was May/June. This coworker and I are also "cube-mates", meaning that we both share a cubicle, which is a common layout at our office.

    These are things that make me feel like she does not like me so much:

    • There is a group of RCGs that sort of hang out together, which we are more or less a part of. I noticed that any time I say something in that group, she basically just...ignores me and will only address and respond to the other dudes in the group. She also only ever seems to address and joke around with the other guys in the group...
    • Any time I try to joke with her or start a conversation or anything, she just responds with either a one word answer, or she just flat out does not say anything at all and totally ignores me. I have even seen her roll her eyes at me before. It is not like I constantly try to disturb her while working either. At first I thought that may be the case (that she was simply too busy and I was ruining her groove by trying to talk), but I notice that she spends a large chunk of the day on her phone, or hanging out in other people's cubes just socializing and sending them memes over our workplace IM system. So basically, she seems to make an effort with literally everyone else (even the coworkers she has ranted and talked bad about before).
    • I found out recently that she has a group chat with those other RCGs, which kind of hurts because it is like, why does she constantly bring it up in front me (both in one-on-one situations and while conversing with the other members) while knowing that I am not in it, or even trying to include me?
    • She is very hot and cold with me. The only times she seems to be willing to talk is when she feels like it (meaning if she is bored or if she needs to rant about someone, and we have had lots of deep convos as a result, but this is rare), but she never "returns the favor" so to speak.
    • There are a couple of guys in that RCG group that she is super close with, and sometimes I get the feeling that those guys also act strange with me as well. For example during a meeting I went to go sit next to those guys and the girl, and they all stopped smiling as soon as I approached and did not talk to me at all. These guys were friendly before, but I have a feeling she told them something about me. She has also shut me down in conversations with them before....
    • If I am in a conversation with any of the guys at work she also talks to, she walks away in a huff without even participating.

    Also, as a side-note, she seems very well-liked by everyone, which makes sense since she is a good worker, but there are things I personally find off-putting about her:

    • The fact that she shit-talks so many people in our office to me, and tells me so many personal details about her life, but then does the stuff I mentioned above, and...
    • The other day during scrum, she began making fun of an intern on our team (calling him a "cocky little kid that needs to be taught a lesson"). What was even more discouraging was the fact that our superiors who were also in the scrum team also laughed along with her, and also continued to make fun of that intern. The scrum lead while laughing also told her, "Shhh he may hear you! He is right there!" to which she responded, "I don't care...." which everyone laughed at even more. I actually saw the intern walk by the scrum room at the end of this exchange, and he looked super hurt (so it kind of bothers me that our superiors like her so much).

    I know that in the end of the day, that not everyone will like me and I recognize the fact that coworkers do not have to be friends. But I cannot help but feel kind of...upset at seeing all this, especially because I am literally stuck with her in a small space 8+ hours a day. I mean...I would like to feel like she doesn't flat-out dislike me at least. I apologize if this sounds whiney btw, I was wanting some advice or input on the situation. I also feel pretty alone, because I have no peers to talk to about this (I am not really close to others). I just do not know why she acts like this (afaik I do not smell...)?

    Edit: I have done some introspection as well about the situation...wondering if I have ever said anything mean or offensive, but I really cannot think of anything.

    American Express Internship + General Questions

    Anyone have much experience with the AmEx SWE internship? Recent posts seem to give mixed opinions (leaning towards the better side) so I'd love to learn more. Also, is it normal to get a congratulation call with no email containing information on the offer? They told me to check my email for all the information but I assume they are still working on it... It couldn't have been a mistake, right?? Haha just feeling a bit nervous..

    Also, how hard would placement in NYC be? I am near one of their offices so I assume I'll be put there but I REALLY want to work in NYC as it's been a dream of mine forever. Would it be likely, especially considering I am near one of their other offices?

    Paid $15k up front for a bootcamp, 5 weeks in. Told that I would be kicked out if I apply to jobs during the bootcamp, but I just came across a good opportunity.

    • Have a BS in Psych from a small liberal arts school
    • Started studying programming for 6 months after getting sick of retail job
    • Paid $15k up front for a bootcamp so I can get my foot in the door
    • 5 weeks into the boot camp
    • Boot camp said that they will kick us out if we look for jobs during the course
    • Friend at a well known banking company is hiring Jr devs and he wants me to interview to at least take advantage of the opportunity

    Not sure what to do, I don't want to be out $15k if I don't get the job and the bootcamp somehow finds out I was in the interview process.

    The bootcamp is also 9-5 so I'm not sure when I would find the time to even interview in the first place (they might have the option of doing it over the phone).

    Edit:

    Was just told that they could try and schedule a 12-1 interview or an 8-9AM interview

    Edit 2:

    I don't have a job right now and I'm just living off savings that I saved over the 3 years I lived with my parents, currently paying rent with roommates and other bills.

    I don't feel comfortable with my coding skills, but this is a junior position so I feel like I could succeed given time.

    What is a fair salary for a information security engineer position in the Bay?

    Hi all, I am interviewing for an "information security engineer" position in the Bay Area and trying to prep with some research on salaries. But glassdoor gives two very different numbers for "Security Engineer" (~198k) vs "Information Security Engineer" (~142k). This seems really weird to me. How would you handle such a large discrepancy in data when researching an offer?

    For background, I have a master's degree and some experience but not under that specific title. I have a lot of self study as well (got into security through being a linux nerd in HS).

    Do outsiders have a skewed perspective of CS?

    I am a university student pursuing a career in energy/petroleum industry. I frequently browse the oilandgas related career subreddit.

    You might know, but 2015-2017 really left a lot of grads in the dust. Although things have been picking up, I see a lot of discouragement online towards pursuing a degree in something like petroleum engineering or the industry in general.

    Along with this discouragement, I often see advice like "go do computer science, go do finance..."; in other cases, I get the vibe that people think of CS/tech as a surefire backup plan they'll fall on if things go south.

    As people directly pursuing CS careers, do you think that sentiment above is accurate (and this industry is really some giant gold mine) or perhaps this is just a case where the grass is greener on the other side?

    IMO, I do not think these people have really experienced the CS job search. Now neither have I, but I have many friends in CS and even with our university being top 10 (?) in CS, a small percentage of my CS friends seem to have it easy or a one way ticket to a six figure tech job.

    Univ hire vs industry hire, gap year after graduation

    If you graduated but is unemployed for 1.5 year due to some family reasons (but you did self study to improve your skills so it's not a waste of time), are you considered a university hire or an industry hire?

    Many comapanies still consider you as university hire after 1 year of graduation BUT if I have to take time off not working for longer than 1 year after graduation, am I now considered industry hire? In this case, are interviews for industry hire harder than, even though they will know from my resume that I did not have work experience? Meaning, will you just be automatically be put into a "standard test" regardless of whether you have work experience or not if you graduated for +1year?

    New to programming

    Hello!

    I'm new to programming and I'd love to be able to make a career out of it.

    A little background: I'm working at a bank right now, and I have my BS in business. In the corporate location, I was able to see everyone in the technology department work, and I found it extremely interesting. I was able to take an intro to programming course in college and I did well and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I was close to graduating and just never took another course because it didn't fit in my degree path.

    I was able to find a few positions I narrowed down within the bank that I was interested in, including Web Developer and Mobile app developer. My question is, what other "departments" within technology are in a bank (or any corporation) besides the two I listed above?

    What courses should I be taking? I found a website called Udemy.com. I found this course and it seems to have quite a few Languages. Which languages do you think I should focus on? Any feedback, regardless if it was a question I just asked is so much appreciated. Like I mentioned I am new to this field and I'm very eager to learn.
