Posted: 28 Jan 2018 03:02 PM PST Hi everyone. I'm currently on a journey to become a full stack web developer. I have just completed the web developer and advanced web developer bootcamp by Colt Steele on Udemy. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on what I need to learn next or which courses I should be looking at to further my knowledge. I would appreciate any and all help. A side note: I am proficient in HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery, Node, Mongo, Express, SQL, ES2015, ES2016/ES2017 and all other topics covered in the above courses. Lastly, would it be better for me to now dive into a project of my own instead of looking for new technologies to add to my skill set? [link] [comments]

How much Javascript will I actually have to know/use in front-end development? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 01:34 PM PST So I am pretty good with HTML and CSS (took a Udemy course), and I finally started on JS. I'm most of the way done with this course I'm doing on SoloLearn and theres still ALOT I dont understand; I am learning all this to build a portfolio and shoot for a web dev position. I've started making one using templates, but I was wondering how heavily I will I REALLY be using JS and what for? I'm a good way through my portfolio site and haven't used a bit of it yet, JUST HTML, CSS, and flash... I get the concept of how it works, but not the function? How often will I be using it, really, and what for? The app talked about Booleans, Loops, etc., but not how they interact with the HTML or CSS in any way (the exercises were mostly just generating text on an empty page and mathematical algorithms). I asked someone on SoloLearn and they told me that the JS course on SoloLearn is not really good for beginners (they teach JS and they suggested Khan Academy) so I'll be checking that out, but she told me that JS is really something I'll end up using/learning on the job and not to worry about it too much. EDIT: Thank you all SO much for your answers -- it seems that I want to become a web DESIGNER, not a web developer. I had no idea they were each their own position and not the same thing! Still, while I'm here, how much JS would I actually have to know as a Web DESIGNER ? [link] [comments]
What sites am I allowed to make chrome plugins for? X-post /r/chrome Posted: 28 Jan 2018 01:23 PM PST Hello! I have just finished a small plugin for a website that I use for a hobby that I share with some people. I do not own the website though. My question is simply; am I always allowed to publish this on the store? The plugins just adds some dropdowns and buttons, collects no info and is just for people who use this website. Thanks! Switching from Vue to React... Posted: 27 Jan 2018 04:47 PM PST Hey, I work in the IT, but not as a dev(I know Java, C++, JS(ES6) pretty well though). I want to get into web development so I spend the last 4 weeks learning Vue.js and everything web dev. related to it(after my work) and I would say that I have a decent grasp on it. I decided to go for Vue first, since it's known as the "easiest" frontend framework of the three(Angular, React, Vue) and I love it so far. The problem I have with Vue is exactly the reason, why it is so popular. It takes away alot of boilerplate code, which means I don't need a deep understanding on a lot of things, since Vue will take care of it. This article fits my current situation :P Also, React offers a lot more job opportunities in my area and I would like to learn more about it's huge ecosystem. Besides that I thing learning React, which requires a deeper understanding of JS, will help me out a lot in the future(JS is here to stay...). I watched some "React JS crash courses" and React looks very similar to Vue! Can you guys recommend me some good courses/tutorials/resources regarding React? What would be the biggest challenges, when switching from Vue to React? I already know that React uses JSX and doesn't come with Two-Way-Data-Binding for example. I would like to build a complete app, coding the front- and backend by myself :) [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Jan 2018 12:18 PM PST So I have this: github.com/krgamestudios/mailer It's a really simple mass mailer, and it requires that I download the .csv of email addresses each time that I send something (about once a week). I also don't have a proper unsubscribe button, instead I need the recipients to reply to let me know. Should I try and implement a proper mass mailer setup? Like this: Connect to google > get emails > send emails Waiting node instance > receive unsub request > connect to google > remove email [link] [comments]
Good job board options for web devs? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 05:49 AM PST I've recently finished my first web dev job, a contract gig, and am now looking for my next job. Previously, the job board on LinkedIn was a solid choice, but now it is absolutely drowning in fake, spam job openings. Are there any other job boards that you folks are aware of that are decent for a junior dev on the job hunt? I am of course aware of the big board, Indeed. But any others would be a big help. Thanks! Is anybody else having issues with Algolia timing out? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 11:30 AM PST Recently I've been getting a lot of exceptions thrown by Algolia saying host is unreachable, cannot resolve host. I searched Google but the majority of the results I found were tied to something like Laravel or virtual boxes. I'm running plain PHP on Apache on three different environments (Windows, Mac, Ubuntu server) and all of them are having the same problem, though it's much more frequent on my local environments (Windows + Mac). The weird thing is it was working perfectly on Windows (before I even started using Mac), but nothing changed in the way Algolia is getting called so I'm starting to think it's a problem on Algolia's side. Would love to hear from anyone who's also been facing issues with Algolia. [link] [comments]
Tips for building html+js ”web page generator” using xml/json data? Posted: 28 Jan 2018 03:56 AM PST Hello! I'm taking on a hobbyish project where I'm building a tool with nwjs that will generate a set of html+js pages dynamically based on data from a specific xml file containing json. The pages will show building automation graphs and I need to connect some elements to the I/O of the end device, I have a library for that. The problem is the device I wish to run the pages locally in the end is low-performance Windows CE device with limited HTML5 implementation and thats why I don't wish to generate the pages there. So essentially I'm now at a point where I know what I need to do, I'm just a little lost in how I should do it. Originally I thought I'm going to output html and js code through file-stream as plain text, but now that I'm getting better at this stuff I realize there could be some better options out there with the aid of the appendChild and those kind of things. Ideally, I would like to build a preview of the pages where you can still adjust the coordinate data etc before saving the files. Is there, for example, a reasonable way to save a html file that's been modified with js so that it keeps the modifications? I hope you get my idea and can give me ideas and pointers on things and methods to consider and research. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Front end Engineer vs full stack developer Posted: 28 Jan 2018 07:33 AM PST hello all.. i need some career advice. I currently work as a full-stack developer working with C#/.NET, AngularJs. I'm self-taught (mostly from this sub.. thanks guys!) and have been working there for about one year. I'm currently interviewing at a company which is looking for a "Front-End Engineer" to use ReactJS exclusively (and CSS obviously). I love working with React and Javascript and have to admit that I enjoy creating beautiful, interactive UIs. However, I don't want to box myself out career wise. I think there is a lot of future in ReactJs and Javascript that I think will help me, but I don't want to stay in front-end for 2 years and then not be able to find another full-stack job. I'm conflicted because this prospective job is better paying, a much shorter commute (like seriously a third of what i do now), and I would be working with React and javascript (which I enjoy much more than using C#). It would be the perfect job if not for the fear that I would box myself out. I don't necessarily like working with C#, but would definitely take a job using Python or Ruby, or any other dynamically typed language. I guess my real question is, after about 3 years of professional development experience, some side projects using a full-stack, and 2 of those 3 years in front-end development, how likely is it that I would be able to find another full-stack position, IF i choose to do that? I just want to have options. Thanks everyone [link] [comments]
I'm a beginner and I'm looking for practice Posted: 28 Jan 2018 01:12 AM PST I'm just starting a web developer course and I'm looking for websites or such to practice my HTML and CSS before moving on to Javascript, something like code challenges maybe. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Jan 2018 04:56 AM PST Having to replace Nginx with H2O is a breeze and now that HTTP2 support is a lot better. I'm still consider new despite done web development for 10 years. Looking for constructive criticism Posted: 28 Jan 2018 10:04 AM PST https://shgysk8zer0.keybase.pub/kernlodge/ First, I'm not much of a designer. I know all the languages and everything pretty darn well, but I'm not so great at deciding what I want to do. I made this last night. It hasn't been tested in browsers I don't have access to (Internet Explorer, Edge, and Safari). I did the layout in CSS grid, so don't even bother if you're using an old browser. Finished product will deal with that, but not yet. If you view the image gallery demo on mobile, the thumbnails aren't sized well for that. That sticky green nav bar doesn't fit, but I really can't think of how to make it better. [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Jan 2018 04:55 AM PST https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/#topic=15868 I have a rather large FAQ page for my project and would like to implement something like Google Help. The questions would be split into categories and could be opened with expand / collapse method. Once you find the relevant question and click it, it opens in new page. The pages could be formatting with images, bold text and so on. This should all be done in Wordpress framework. I'm wondering, if there are any existing Wordpress plugins that can help to implement such a system? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Jan 2018 02:14 AM PST As the title reads. I sent a request to withdraw my earnings from this website. I received two identical payments from the website, while my balance remained intact. I realized my balance had not updated to reflect the two payments so I quickly withdrew the rest of the balance. It's been a month now of regular use of this website and they seem not to have noticed the mistake. So question is, how could this have happened? I tried it again, but it did not work. How do I treat strings with html as text strings. Posted: 28 Jan 2018 03:51 AM PST I built a simple web application that has a text box and a button and everytime you enter something in the textbox and click the button the text in the box gets printed on the screen. The problem is that whenever I enter the string as something like "<b>hello</b>" then the "hello" is printed in bold case. How do I prevent this from hapenning?. The output that I expect from the above example is "<b>hello</b>" to be rendered as <b>hello</b> and not "hello" or bold case "hello". Thank You. [link] [comments] |
