Why is storage space less than advertised on SSDs/HDDs? Posted: 27 Jan 2018 11:52 PM PST So my prof in my Operating System class was going over this the other day, but he's Chinese and kind of has a soft spoken voice so sometimes its kind of hard to follow what he's saying. I think I remember him saying that, for example if you had a 500 GB SSD, you would end up having about 470 GB to really play with, because you always need to have some space to write to no matter what, so that 30 GB of space is on reserve. But I'm sure I'm not remembering all of the details correctly, because what if we really just end up using all of the disk on the space and never want to erase, but just keep writing? Definition of Application Platform Posted: 27 Jan 2018 11:01 AM PST One of the challenges that I face on a regular basis is defining terms that most of us take for granted. Recently I was asked about application platforms and more to the point the definition of a shared application platform. e.g. Microsoft Azure The word platform, like the word application, can mean many different things to different people. With application, for example, there is a difference between a single executable run on a desktop and a web application or mobile application. So I'd love to read your opinions. How do you define an application platform? How do you differentiate an application platform from let's say an infrastructure platform or a development platform? How would you make sure that a service like FTP used by itself isn't confused for a platform? In addition to your opinions if you have any scholarly articles or references that you could point me to it would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
