Free or super cheap domain+hosting options for students? Posted: 21 Nov 2017 08:23 AM PST I'm completely new to making websites, just have a background fiddling with html/css and am good with computers and learning. I want to make one that lasts for a while and is able to handle some traffic as it will be a primary site for a friend's comic series that will (hopefully) take off within the next year. As a student I think there should be cheaper options available. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 10:29 AM PST Not sure if this is the right place to do it, but I aspire to be a full-stack dev one day. Just trying to get my foot in the door, and am wondering what you think of my resume. All criticisms welcome. Just trying to get hired as a jr. web dev as front-end for now. Should I just omit the level of skills, since they're all pretty mediocre? [link] [comments]

Most of my job is writing code to glue together other libraries - is this common? Posted: 21 Nov 2017 04:16 AM PST Hi all, I'm a junior dev and use node/react at my current job. Most of what I do on the job is taking other libraries and glue them together with little bits of custom code code and tailoring it to specific use cases. Example - Using passport and different strategies to do authentication or taking a React library for something like a carousel and integrating that into the React app. I don't actually write the code to do the carousel myself. I feel like a bit of a fraud doing this as I'm not writing much custom code myself to do things and rely a lot on other people's libraries. Without them, I'd have no idea where to start or what to do - makes me feel really stupid at times. Is this a common practice at web shops, I understand that no need to reinvent the wheel if it's already made but at the same time I can't help but feel I'm not doing much. Thanks for any advice. Help with footer positioning on IE? Posted: 21 Nov 2017 09:24 AM PST Could someone with access to Internet Explorer possibly figure out what's wrong with this page? Someone with IE told me the footer(s) are not displaying properly - they are not staying at the bottom. There are two footers - a small one that starts with "Coming up", which is stacked on top of a larger one with links, copyright, etc. in it. This page is with content that should be longer than the browser window: https://eggzample.github.io/halp.html This one has content that does not fill the browser window. https://eggzample.github.io/halp-short.html It looks fine in Firefox on Linux: https://eggzample.github.io/screenshot-short.png Any ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 09:05 AM PST Hey guys Im new in the world of web dev and am currently making a portfolio for myself and I am using background images from https://unsplash.com/ . The images from this site are amazing and have amazing quality but the problem is these images are HUGE like 4-6 mb huge. Can CloudFlare or Akamai be used as a replacement for caching tools like Varnish? Posted: 21 Nov 2017 03:16 PM PST In a web developer's stack, apart from nginx, php-fpm, mysql, etc., Varnish also gets a mention as caching tool for http requests. I'd like to know why is it necessary when we already have services like CloudFlare and Akamai across the world that do the same thing effectively (but at the place of their edge servers rather than origin servers). In fact, isn't it better if the requests don't even come all the way to our origin servers, and get answered from the edge servers itself? In other words, I don't really understand the need for Varnish in a web developer's stack. [link] [comments]
Is Google Fiber different than Comcast and Century Link? Posted: 21 Nov 2017 02:53 PM PST I posted this to ELI5 but the mods there constantly need to feel important so they removed it. Better to post it here anyways where people will know what they're talking about instead of some 4th grader with a thesaurus random guess. How is Google Fiber different? Is switching a good way to stick it to Comcast and the other communications companies or am I just paying the same people? [link] [comments]

I built a webapp for a competition, looking for criticism and feedback. Posted: 21 Nov 2017 02:18 PM PST The purpose of the project was to visualize some data from Airbnb and to help those considering hosting in San Francisco. Here's the project: c1-airbnb Here's the code: Github repo I'm looking for criticism and feedback on anything (e.g. design, code quality, structure, better tools, etc.) EDIT: The competition ended a few days ago [link] [comments]
Can someone help me figure out why my materialize CSS hamburger button isn't working? Posted: 21 Nov 2017 02:17 PM PST Just can't seem to figure it out; all the code is at the link provided. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/47422239/materialize-css-framework-hamburger-menu-not-working And, if that isn't enough, here's a link to the github page the website is hosted on. http://www.ourimports.ca/serntek.github.io-materialize-cheatsheet/ [link] [comments]

[Bootstrap] Need help with card sizing Posted: 21 Nov 2017 01:10 PM PST Hey guys, Here is a rough/incomplete copy of the code I am working on https://codepen.io/ryanjemerson/pen/xPWpmo I have 6 or so cards I want to put in a deck where they all the same size. Is it the row container causing the problem? If I keep it as a vertical card, it seems to work but I prefer the horizontal layout. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Libraries for js to take tediousness out without being super hard to learn/use? Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:41 PM PST Hey guys, I've recently been working on a project using Ionic (making a PWA) as the front end and it seems super complicated and honestly not worth it. I am a Django developer and in the past have simply used Django and jQuery to build sites but jQuery is super tedious sometimes (showing/hiding things and quick validation) is there a simpler framework that just makes jQuery a bit less tedious? Secondly for PWAs is Bootstrap a good option? I need a way to make grids and stuff so my site works well on mobile. [link] [comments]
