ERC-721 (non-fungible tokens) in gaming, and the possibilities that they open

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 02:35 AM PDT

I believe these open up crazy interesting possibilities for the general purpose of tracking ownership, and initially we'll see this play out in gaming. To quote from http://erc721.org:

ERC-721 is a free, open standard that describes how to build non-fungible or unique tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. While most tokens are fungible (every token is the same as every other token), ERC-721 tokens are all unique.

Think of them like rare, one-of-a-kind collectibles.

A good example here would be Gods Unchained which is a trading card game that tracks the ownership of the playing cards on Ethereum. This means that the cards, even though digital, truly belong to the players of the game. They can be traded on platforms that have nothing to do with Fuel Games - the company behind the game. Even more, if the company stops supporting the game client, an open source client could be created by the community that uses the smart contracts where the cards are tracked (these cannot be taken down). In the end, this will make gamers happier and safer. Gameplay will feel more rewarding since they actually get something that has a trading value out of it. I envision that platforms where non-fungible tokens are traded will start getting a lot of traffic in the coming years. There are a lot of games where non-fungible assets can find valid usage.

Opinions? Anyone implementing these into their games?

Please, no answers like "database > blockchain", as Ethereum is a lot more than just a chain of blocks, and its scaling has a high probability of being successful. Databases will still have certain purposes, while a trustless, immutable, public, decentralized and permissionless account-based ledger will have others.

    Hi,

I was looking for a good starting point on learning HLSL or learning to code shaders? I know it's probably more complicated than that.

I wanted to read up on the topic work on it as a hobby project.

I just attached Creative Common licensing to all songs in this playlist. Instrumental early 2000s inspired Indie Rock (sounds like Modest Mouse, Pinback, Phoenix, Real Estate) . Would really love for it to go to some use. Feel free to lmk if you would like any other works as well!

    How is this cutscene made?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 08:10 AM PDT

How is the initial cutscene from witcher 3 made? In this [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd2gz6AxYoA) the cutscene im talking about starts at 0:22 seconds and goes on till the end. It combines great sound effects, dialogue, voice acting and dark cartoonish visuals. I feel like I could watch a feature length movie made in such a style. Is there a standard software to make something like that?

    How I doubled my sales...

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 11:47 AM PDT

To experiment I had my game on Steam listed at $9.99 USD, twice what I figured was a good price.

After lowering it to $4.99 my sales more than doubled! A neat tip for anyone struggling is to try halving your price.

For reference my game is here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/926450/Thibalryn/

I hope this info helps someone :)

What is the best method for creating (2D) maps?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 07:58 AM PDT

Hi, i started this weekend just for fun with game development.

Im using an sdl2 library with golang and am programming it from just that.
One question that i came up with is 'what method do people use to create maps?'

Do you define each tile/tileset and add it in an array or something?
Or do people create the whole map and save it as a png or bmp, etc.?
also, how are collisions handled? are they added seperately or defined with the tiles?

im sorry if this is the noobiest question, but whats the easiest/most efficient way?

Libgdx newb, camera question, also learning resource question

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 11:26 AM PDT

I follow Learning Libgdx Game Development eBook and Author implements CameraHelper class, along normal Camera object that implements Zoom and following the target and probably some other things along the way.

Can it be done extending just camera class or composition ? It seems like a clearer code to me ? Like this:

    public class Camera extends OrthographicCamera { GameObject target; boolean followTarget; Camera(float viewWidth, float viewHeight){ super(viewWidth, viewHeight); } public void setTarget(GameObject target) { this.target = target; } public GameObject getTarget() { return target; } @Override public void update(){ if(followTarget && target != null){ this.position.x = target.position.x; this.position.y = target.position.y; } update(true); } }

Any problems with it i can expect?

Has this book a good quality code examples? I like learning from books because i imagine authors are more competent than random tutorials on the internet.

Guys also tell me if this is wrong sub for those questions and direct me pls

Interactive map website based on in-game map.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 11:18 AM PDT

Hello! I'm new to development in general but I've decided that for my first project I will create an interactive map website based on an in-game map and I want people to be able to search their location based on coordinates (x, y, z) - I'm not particularly certain where to start with this so I was hoping someone might be able to help shed some light on the situation!

I've looked into https://www.mapbox.com/ which may be the answer but I was just wondering what other developers have used to set up an interactive map website. Thank you in advance!

What tool would you use to quickly sculpt some cave hollows?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 09:46 AM PDT

Hi there, I'm using Unity and now that Unity 2019 has holes in the terrain I'd like to start sculpting hollows for caves.

I'd really like to build them out with sphere brush or half sphere brushes and have them automatically UV mapped and export them as FBX files.

I've got the Digger asset from the Unity asset store but I'd like to just make them myself externally.

I've got 3ds Max 2018, and I'm ok at it if I'm making geometric shapes but I don't know how to go about making organic sculpts in it, I've got blender (but I suck at it), and I could get anything else honestly if it worked. I want something easy and quick.

    Any tips? Thanks in advance!

    Where to upload my game?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 03:36 PM PDT

I am 13 years old programmer, and have made some games before, but I haven't uploaded them anywhere. Steam has a fee of $100, which is too much for me as I'm not going to make any profit from my games.
