To celebrate the Super Blood Wolf Moon tonight I'm launching my first game, Night of the Blood Moon

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 11:45 AM PST

    Hey /r/GameDev

The Super Blood Wolf Moon is coming, and the nightmares are being unleashed. After many years of attempts at trying to make a game I buckled down in 2018 and got it done. Night of the Blood Moon is my solo developed rogue-lite which puts many of my favorite mechanics in one place.

I am incredibly proud to share this with you all, but the journey has not come easy. There were many sleepless nights, and lots of sacrifices which I am sure many of you have experienced. I wrote up a long-form discussion of what I learned over on /r/indiedev for anyone interested. The article primarily covers my struggle in marketing, and what I've learned for next time. Taking 20 minutes a day to market is probably the thing I failed at most. Feel free to ask any questions about what I learned from development. Doing this alone was not an easy task, and I'll be happy to share all of my ups and blunders with you all.

This game is my hopeful entry into the game development world, and I would love to hear all your feedback. Here's to hoping 2019 has many of us following new paths, and creating great games.

The game launches at 12:12 tonight when the Super Blood Wolf Moon is over North America, and the nightmares gain full power.

Fashion game ideas, would this be a good game?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 10:45 AM PST

I was on r/streetwear to ask if there were any fashion games that are "remotely serious". What I meant by "remotely serious" is that the game would be semi serious and not a Barbie dress up game. I got one comment that told me about an idea to make a game where you would start as an "amateur" with brands like h&m and urban outfitters and leveling up by working for brands to get more deluxe and premium brands like Gucci, givenchy, Tom Ford etc. This could be a mobile game I don't really care I just really loved this idea.

I can't imagine a gimball control using mobile swipe... How?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 10:37 AM PST

I've asked this in /r/Unity3D and they told me to use a virtual joystick, but I still want to weigh my options.

I'm doing this "fly-through" job in Unity, the camera msut fly through a 3D scene. And the out put should be for Android. I don't want a UI-reliant controller, I want people to naviagate through the scene using swipe and swipe only. But how? Also, both the walls and the player have RB on them. So why am I still passing through the walls? In this video, I have explained it all:

    Making/Releasing a Demo

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 10:24 AM PST

Hi I want to make a demo for my game (link to steam page). There are a couple of options I'm considering:

    1. Release a time-limited demo of the game, as in a steam "free weekend" deal.
    2. Release a feature-limited version of the game.

I would prefer to do option 1, but I don't know how to do it "safely" without releasing an easily worked-around time limitation, like checking the system time, or the NIST time. This would basically mean I'd be giving the game away for free. M

My concern with option 2 is that it might not show enough of the game to make things really interesting. I'm sure other people here have dealt with this too. What did you do, and how did it work out for you? Are there other, better option I should be considering as well?

This is a new low for Udemy...

    Posted: 19 Jan 2019 02:43 PM PST

I bought an OpenGL course from Udemy thinking it'll add to my knowledge, but it just copy-pastes everything from Learnopengl.com, without any additional explanations, and the guy IS SO FUCKING STUPID that he replaces a variable name 4 times BY HAND. He doesn't add ANYTHING to the code, he just types the code from learnopengl.com... it's as if I've bought a parroting simulator. He also runs into a lot of problems during the tutorial, which takes a lot of time to fix. PLAN, DAMMIT!

At least the guy's got a good British accent!

Dont' buy anything from Udemy, it's where knowledge goes to die.

How Not To Build A Video Game

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 09:47 AM PST

Screen side. Right to be left.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 02:09 AM PST

Hello everyone! Can you guys explain or give a link on explanation why in many videogames player starts on left side? Is it ancestry of Mario? Stuck on that question today at 5 a.m. and that gives me a headache, because in my game, player unit being on the right side, will save me a lot of work and problems, but at prototype it looks a little strange and uncanny and I don't know why. Tried to google it, but found only chess and rubick's for dummies.

What's the state of HTML5 game development across devices?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2019 11:50 PM PST

So I've been looking into multi-device development as well as shifting away from the distribution model constraints of AppStore/Google Play. But I'm not sure what's the state of HTML5 game dev at the moment across the following:

    1. Complexity of experiences - are we at a stage to provide for quick-loading 3D environments etc. Perhaps not the same level as native Fortnite etc but perhaps scaled-down versions.
    2. Tools - One of the big advantages with Unity (for example) is the editor itself, assets and community around it. I was looking at ThreeJS but I don't see tooling even in the same ballpark. There's a web-based editor which seems quite lacking. Perhaps I haven't done enough research around this as well.
    3. Direction - I pay close attention to WebGL (e.g. through Unity) but I don't think it's anywhere close to production-ready. I also wonder about mobile browser support for consistent experiences including full-screen views, support for IAP etc etc.

Anyone wants to chime-in with their experiences?

I want to export my OpenGL application to Android but I'm confused...

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 08:47 AM PST

My friend is a 3D designer, and he's asked me to make a camera fly-through a 3D scene for him in Unity. But I'm a feisty little fella and I want to use OpenGL. I have a few questions:

1- Is it possible to import FBX to OpenGL, just like OBJ?

2- What should I do about the controls? How can I make a virtual joystick in OpenGL?

3- How can I even export the file to Android? I'm using Visual C++. Should I use Xamarin?

Thanks a lot for your answers. I know my question is loaded, but I need to know. Thanks again.

Before you know what kindness really is you must lose things, feel the future dissolve in a moment like salt in a weakened broth. What you held in your hand, what you counted and carefully saved, all this must go so you know how desolate the landscape can be between the regions of kindness. How you ride and ride thinking the bus will never stop, the passengers eating maize and chicken will stare out the window forever.

Game Development tutorials for beginners using Unity!

    Posted: 20 Jan 2019 03:31 AM PST

Hey everyone, I have something really useful for all of you who want to create a video game or project and are beginners to the scene, I remember when I started I was watching a lot of basic videos and just copy-pasting scripts, downloading projects and just changing models etc. But I wanted to make something by myself, so I wanted to learn coding and programming but I just didn't have the time nor the resources, then I stumbled apon a YouTube channel that goes over basic scripts in Unity and explaining how they work and how they could be used and I recommend all of you beginners visit that channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8V6L3MxBwPmqtc-mIlxOKA

The tutorials are simple to follow, not that long and pretty useful if you ask me.

    Cheers!
